The staff said you could not rent a scooter without a NZ driver license. But the next day she rent the scooter to a young university student from overseas. She did not want to tell me anything about walking tracks around that island. And she just said go to DOC

Don't be misled, unless you are not really wanting to find out about what is on offer. This business calls itself Red Shed, painted red, and Oban (the name of the town in Stewarts Island) Visitor Centre. In reality it is the booking office of the ferry company, not an independent visitor centre. The ferry company seems to have the location to entice you to what they call the visitor centre. There are no i-sites, which is confusing, on the Island, it seems that some businesses need to do their own bookings to get a chance to survive. If you go to the Red Shed, they will offer you ferry company tours first and you don't get to hear about other options. They also offer a bus tour that carefully picks out businesses they want you to know about. Check out other options so you get the best choices.

Found out that this was not a real visitor centre, but ferry booking office - too late we booked ferry company tour without knowing there were others. We travelled on the ferry also.
