Yes you have to pay, but it's great if you plan to go to Milford sound the next morning and the rangers are very nice. Tons of space and clean bathrooms!

Way to overcrowded these days - used to so enjoy this place in the 80's & 90's. Now it is just far to congested and a "cash cow" for Dept of Conservation.

Expensive for what it was (picnic table and open sided shelter). Small gravel floored open sided cooking shelter was brand new in march2017 - there was no water in the tank but i presume that shouldnt be a problem any more guaging by how much rain Milford sound gets. View is pleasant yes, but is average when compared to the views around the rest of milford sound. The best campsite is in the northernmost corner, beside the river below the tree. Brand new drop loo on site near new shelter. DOC honesty box for fees. The sandflies here are AWFUL - bring repellant and cover up when in shade - i got destroyed by sandflies.

Real Lord of the Rings Country here. Several near by Peaks in the Earl Mountains where given Lord of the Rings Names in 1973 and from the shore of Lake Gunn you can see the very Peak submitted as Tolkien's Mountain in 2011 which can be climbed from a slip at Lake Fergus.

Beautiful scenery surrounds this campsite. We visited in winter and had almost the entire site to itself so the serenity was second to none. The Lake Gunn Outlet runs along the backside of the campsite and offers lovely walking opportunities. Facilities were basic but enough when camping, especially in vans. Stunning spot
