We all came here purely for the tacos. I ordered the fajitas, and the size and deliciousness blew my mind. I've eaten fajitas many times, but El Fogon surprisingly won the best tasting fajitas I've had ever! Also, the size is ridiculous - one fajita plate for $9 could feed 2 people easily.
The horchata is also a must in the hot weather. Ended up ordering 2 just because it was so good.
The chips and salsa were also absolutely delicious.
I'd recommend going early - it can get very packed with tourists if you arrive late. Parking is plentiful.

The Taco Loco is incredible! A short walk off of the main shopping street (5th Avenue), but well worth it. Not a big place, so seating is limited. Wanted authentic Mexican food and flavors - and found it all right here.

Always awesome food here! Taco Loco is heaven!
We have a family condo just north of Playa Del Carmen and every time we go there (usually a couple times a year at least) El Fogon is a must visit (ask any local and they will agree as their mouth starts to water).
It might be busy enough that you have to wait but trust me the food is more than worth it.
I suggest each person in your party picks something different and you all share, but YOU HAVE TO GO THERE HUNGRY, the portions are very filling.response / report this review -

All the dishes were very good. If you're accustomed to the "American palate" of Mexican dishes, please don't expect all things to taste the same while you're in Mexico. Although a couple of our dishes were cheese heavy, they were good months the less. We really enjoyed the cactus starter. The made to order fruit drinks were delicious and refreshing during the hot weathergo for the non-dairy versions. The staff were all friendly and could communicate well if you're unable to speak on Spanish, but please tryyou're in a Spanish speaking countrythey'll appreciate that! Note this is an open air restaurant and the kitchen (mainly a grill) and dining area share the same space, so don't expect there to be air conditioning, but do expect to smell a bit like the food you just atechalk it all up to your travel experience and just enjoy it!

Best taco in town. Local feel, cheap and great food. I usually get three tacos and a beer and it gets me perfectly satisfied for about 5 dollars. A must eat kind of place when you’re visiting Playa Del Carmen!
During peak hours expect to wait for a spot as well as to receive service. It’s also hot inside - so be sure not to dress to thick!response / report this review -

Food was absolutely delicious. Be warned the portions are large. The problem prices are also very reasonable $22.50 for two adults. We had the alambre especial and the fogoncito. We also had the a cantaloupe and strawberry fruit waters which were made fresh. This is a must try as locals recommended this as one of their go to spots. This is truly authentic Mexican food from the riviera. Word of advice for fellow Americans, this is NOT Tex Mex don’t expect that to be served.

Al Pastor is amazing! Everyone mentions the Taco Loco as being a must-try. I did enjoy the taco (it was huge), but it needed some cheese or sour cream to balance the dryness of the meat. We always get friendly service at El Fogon, though it seems to take a while for the food to arrive.

Love this place. It’s very hot in there. No ac. They close the blinds to try and help keep the sun out but that just locks in the kitchen heat. Food is authentic fresh and tasty. Never been disappointed. Not going to say they’re the number one taco place because I haven’t tried them all here but the locals love it so it must be one of the best.

I ordered the alambre pastor and my partner ordered the fajitas pastor. Both are delicious! The fajita comes with a soup and a baked potato so if you’re extra hungry or want more “sides”, order that. My alambre was massive, personally I think I’d prefer the one without cheese as it’s a bit easier to eat.

Simply put, the best al pastor tacos I've ever had. Amazing spot. Don't get anything else other than tacos. The other food is good, but save your appetite for the al pastor tacos. You're going to want more and wish you were less full.

The food was not that great. The server touted the great authentic Mexican food. But the cheese had a funny smell and taste. The meat was not seasoned. We ordered quesadillas and tacos. They don't come with anything on them except meat and cheese. I had to drown it in sauce to make it taste like anything. I wouldn't go back or recommend this place to anyone base on the food. The service was great.

Edited: I am changing my rating from 5 stars to 1 as of today. I went with a friend, and we both ordered a drink with our meal. I got something other than what I ordered, told the waitress when she came back, and she brought the correct drink. We were also told we would be getting a resident discount. When the bill came, I was charged for the drink the waitress brought to me, that I didn't order , along with something else that wasn't suppose to be on our bill. She refused to take those things off my bill. The manager was also telling me I had to pay for those things I didn't order. The drink I didn't order sat on the table beside me, the glass as full as when it was first brought to the table. It wasn't until I got my camera out and took a picture of our bill, the menu and the drink, did our bill immediately appear at our table with those things removed. The resident discount we were told we would get was also refused to us. We were not rude, and tried for quite a while to work all this out. Yes, the food was good, but this kind of service was deplorable!!!!!

What can I say? Fantastic! Huge portions of authentic Mexican food for a very reasonable price. Everything fresh and delicious. The Taco Loco is what I would recommend if you are looking for a classic Mexican dish but essentially you can't go wrong at this place, everything is fabulous. My wife had brochettes and quesadillas and they were perfect. Be aware that it gets super busy around sunset and if you go too late sometimes the wait is over 30 minutes but it is well worth it. 5 stars.

The food is great and what you would expect to pay while in the tourist zone. Certainly if you're willing to travel a bit further north or further from the beach you can find other delicious Mexican food items for a more economic price, but what does it for me here is the selection. There is a little bit of everything here all in one restaurant.

This restaurant came highly recommended from a few sites and was exactly as stated. Authentic Mexican cuisine. Great atmosphere and service. The tacos al pastor are amazing. Highly recommended for a trip to Playa del Carmen.
