Great for what you want: a clean backpackers with great food. Friendly staff, pleasant owners, picture perfect setting! Highly recommend the fish curry, which was beyond excellent!

The management here has been fantastic and clearly runs a great ship! They're well organized, always willing to help, and have a great staff working here! Stayed in a private room with a double bed and it was a perfect size for two. The facilities are clean and well kept. The view The Funky Cichlid is spectacular and there is plenty of activities to do. If you're coming this way, I would suggest this location!

Great for a party atmosphere. I've never really stayed in the lodge but my friends say it's a pretty decent joint. Watersports are on offer (sometimes?) and the menu is relatively affordable with generous portions. Drinks prices are on par with most other lodges on "The Strip". Definitely a must stop if you find yourself in Cape Maclear.

A groovy place to have food and drink on the lake front. They have a decent selection of food eats on the menu, and you can purchase cheap Wi-Fi here as well. Often people are playing games, having fun or dancing. The music is usually not Malawian loud, so you can still have a conversation without yelling!

Good place to stay if you are looking for something cheap by the lake. The quality of food, rooms and staff service is below par. Make sure to follow up with a call to check room contents and amenities before you finalize your booking to decide if the place suits you and purpose for visit.

Loved this place. Right on the lake, and super cool. Jen and Duncan were amazing, and all the other guests were lovely too. The beer was cold and the food was the best in town. Definitely recommend this place to everyone.

To put it simply: The Funky Cichlid was a phenomenal place to stop. The staff and our hosts, Duncan and Jen, were phenomenal. The mornings spent paddling, delicious freshly caught lunches, afternoon reading a book in the hammocks, snorkeling, sun-downers, curries (goat!) and late night parties were everything my friends and I needed to ease into to pure relaxation.

We visited Malawi for the first time in June/July 2017 and stayed at the Funky Cichlid - what an absolutely INCREDIBLE place! The hosts were just amazing and happy to help us with anything we needed. The food was DELICIOUS and the bar was always stocked with ice cold Colsburg beer. Couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. Right on the water, there are canoes and SUP boards which you can use to paddle to the islands to go snorkeling and even better - there are hammocks on the beach for you to relax and enjoy the sunset. We will most definitely be back and we will definitely stay at the Funky Cichlid again! Thanks so much Jen & Duncs, you hospitality is fantastic and we cant wait to visit again soon!

My friends and I had a great stay at The Funky Cichlid! The lodge was so charming and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and accommodatingthey made all the beds in the dorm upon our arrival, and let some of us who forgot towels borrow some.The food was fantastic too (probably some of the best I've had in Malawi in my eight weeks here). We went on the boat tour, went snorkeling and paddle boarding. All went smoothly and we had a blast. I only have two weeks left in Malawi but if I had more time I would 100% come back to The Funky Cichlid. My friends are here longer and plan on going back when their families come to visit them. Our experience was all positive!

A nice lodge in a wonderful location with amazing views across Lake Malawi.

The rooms are pretty standard with basic facilities but are clean and comfortable. The bar area is the focal point and a great place to meet other travellers and share stories.

I've been coming here to eat on a regular basis - like my second home and everyone I go there it's been nothing but chill and fun vibes along with epic views of the sunset. The food is amazing and service is on point.

Prince and his staff were amazing. The Funky Cichlid sits right on the shores of Lake Malawi in Cape Maclear. We stayed in the dorm rooms, which were clean and adequate. The meals in The Funky Cichlid were great, although I wish there were more local options - the menu consists of mainly Western style food.

The perfect spot to stay at in Cape Maclear! Affordable rooms, great bar, yummy food with a really welcoming and relaxed vibe. The beach is lovely; I highly recommend heading out on the kayaks to the island for a bit of snorkelling. Beautiful clear waters and lots of the infamous brightly coloured Cichlids! Also various watersports on offer. Met some great people while here. Big thank you to the team at The Funky for a great stay!

Had an absolute blast staying at the funky. It was the perfect between chill good vibes and fun wonderful people. The rooms were clean and comfortable - the food was delicious and affordable. (Although it did take a long timebut I can understand this with all the power cuts). This little slice of beach is very nice and clean - feels safe as well. I would recommend this lodge/hostel to anyone traveling through Malawi.
