Great Japanese inspired menu with excellent service. Really nice ambience, jazz on Fridays, excellent cocktails if that is your thing. And now totally non-smoking.

Gekko is a Japanese Restaurant located on Merchant Road in downtown Yangon.

I went there one night to meet a friend and we were led by a staff member to an upstairs seat and table. There were no reserve signs on this table. After we had ordered our drinks and had settled down we were told to go to another table by staff members who claimed that the table was reserved (even though it had no reserve sign and that the staff lead us to this table). We refused on this basis, the manager and several staff members threatened us to move.

The sad part was, after we had moved, and eventually finished our drinks, and when we decided to leave some time later, the table which they moved us from was still empty.

For future practice, Gekko should make use of alternative planning, if customers are settled and comfortable, refrain moving them as it detracts from the experience. Work to ensure that all customers, even ones who are reserved can be accommodated with little disruption. Double check if a table is in fact reserved and ensure communication between staff members at all times so that customers are not sent to a table which is reserved. Make sure signs are on reserved tables.

Finally, exercise some emotional and situational intelligence, if we are not eating and only drinking then we are clearly moving out soon. Hence, we are unlikely to stay long and unlikely to interfere with a reservation

I like Gekko's interior and design as well as its concept and location, but as a local guide I would not recommend Gekko to my friends, clients or colleagues. The despicable behaviour of staff and management combined with their reservation error is a 1 star offence and therefore fatal to any enjoyment.

Friendly bar staff to practice Burmese and ask how to say different things. Really good cocktails. Beer is not as cheap as other places, cocktails are around 10,000 and use proper Japanese whisky. You receive fresh towels for your face and a cup of cool Japanese tea when you first arrive. I would highly recommend it if you're not on a tight budget.
They also have a very extensive Japanese whisky menu.

There is a lot of food on the menu and there is also 3 ramen dishes. I ordered Japanese food there, because it is a Japanese shop. The service was Satisfactory, because it was neither really bad and neither really good. When I ordered food for a takeaway, the waiters give warm tea. So, not a really bad service. I had to wait around 15 to 30 minutes for the food. Many foreigners go there, because it is a Japanese shop with satisfactory service, delicious food and the shop has 2 floors which looks nice. The price varies around $7-$15 for one dish. In my opinion, it is not cheap neither expensive, so a good price.

Loved this place. It was a welcome and refreshing change. The food is very good, I tried several dishes and none disappointed. If you're looking for good sushi while in Myanmar, definitely head there. Although the prices are quite high compared to the usual places you'd hang out at in Yangon.

A nice upscale Japanese-western bar and restaurant in a colonial building. Definitely a gem in Yangon. The floor tiles are the original tiles of the building in colonial times. The décor shows that the owner has a good taste!

The restaurant was packed with foreigners when I arrived. I ordered a lot of food and they all were good. The waiter showed enough sympathy to me as I was the only one who had dinner alone there.

Amazing! Just what we needed after the journey through Myanmar. Warm welcome, nice cold beer on tap and an amazing Japanese whiskey collection. The staff were great and hospitable and accommodated special requests. The food was great but definitely a bit pricey. Happy Hour was good but only for drinks, no food specials. Ambiance and decor were spot on and a nice change of pace. We feasted and it was well worth it. I'd recommend the place!

Superb, a warm welcome with a cold towel. Take a break from the hot colonial history outside to the new Burmese avant-garde in this modern yet classy take on a Japanese styled bar restaurant. From the leather saddle seats to the soft elegant lighting this place seduces you away from the culture and history outside the door. Menu is really nice take on Japanese fusion.
