Where to start! We stayed here for 3 nights on our stay and had the following constant issues:
1. “Temporary work today on the pool” was every single day. So loud and impossible to sleep, don’t believe them when they say it’s just one day!
2. Constant issues with the Wifi not working in the accommodation, we pretty much rely on this to explore what’s around and what to do next and it just NEVER worked. We constantly flagged this with the staff and it never got sorted and even worse, they just didn’t care.
3. Food is ok, but as is mentioned on some other reviews, it’s European Pricing and there are flies EVERYWHERE!
4. NOOOO SLEEEP - Perhaps the biggest issue, the constant banging of the pool I’ve already mentioned, but also the ice cream van (!) that comes round at 6am every morning, the emptying of the septic tank or something every other day. We barely got 3 or 4 hours sleep a night. Horrid.
Basically, don’t buy into the Yoga-come-hippy fascade, it’s a money making machine based on charging loads of money for an “experience”. Rubbish.
Food is pretty average, but the yoga and rooms are nice. Juices are good, but the breakfast and salad are blend, not much taste and quite expensive
Awesome little spot the staff have good local knowledge
We stayed at rock house which was a sweet set up. Staff was very helpfull and attentive to our questions. We actually didnt have the opportunity to eat here but food looked good. Reason we didnt eat here was because we were too busy stuffing our faces at the local roti shop next door. The place itself is just a couple of plastic chairs, but he makes a sick fish kottu and incredible egg roti's. Pretty much ate here at least once a day every day we stayed in hiriketiya. Seeing as they dont have an online presence i wanted to recommend everyone to try their stuff this way!
The place is beautifully designed. My partner and I stayed at the hammock room and it was very comfortable with an amazing outdoor bathroom.
The breakfast was also very good with a mix of Western and Sri Lankan styles. We didn’t have lunch or dinner there as the menu was Western style (burgers). We felt the place a bit too much Western style. I think the bar/restaurant prices were a bit confusing, as written at the bottom of the menu they add 25% in total to the figures.
We were told when we arrived that there were some temporary works going on to extend the building and we appreciated the notification but we found it a bit noisy.
By far the WORST place I have eaten in Sri Lanka. Service was terrible and extremely unhelpful, food took forever to come out and on top of the unnecessary European prices on their menu they charge an additional 25% for service (lack of) and VAT.
6 of us went here for lunch and the food took over an hour and a half to come in dribs and drabs, service was poor and portions were small. I'd normally forgive a lot of this as it's Sri Lanka and Island life does move slowly, but the prices are as expensive as Europe (scrambled eggs and a coffee cost me €11). Oh and the price you pay is 25% more than the bill as they add in service and tax so watch out for that!
Love the atmosphere. Breakfast was great but not so much the burgers.
Rooms are nice, especially the ones with open windows. Mattress in our room was very bad, we didn't expect that in a place like this, with those prices.
But room was very clean, breakfast was good.
Food a bit overpriced especially with the 25% fees&tax on your bill
Good food, reasonably small selection. Good accommodation, some with aircon, some without. Ok wifi. Sort of hot water. And yoga, if that's your thing. Also friendly dogs.
Easily the best food I have ever had in Sri Lanka, I have not stayed there, but ate all my meals in there wonderful restaurant. A gastronomic life saver.
very nice jungle room. we really enjoyed this near-camping experience!
The whole compound is designed beautifully. The salt restaurant had good food and great ambiance. Service could be better, but it was still better than most of the other places we visited during our holiday.
Fast and efficient service. The owner and staff were really friendly. To top it all off, they made delicious customizable burgers.
An essential destination for anyone visiting the region
Food is ok is you are missing your burger, but toilet not so cleaned and made to feel like a naughty kid if you want to smoke (despite being an outdoor restaurant!) So have to smoke on the road all clients have to remove their shoes on arrival (again, despite being outdoor) but restaurant manager kept his lovely trainers on!!! Won't be back but if you are missing food from home, you might want to pop in!
If you're in Hiriketiya, you'll probably end up checking out Salt House in one way or another, whether you stay there or drop by for a meal or two, there are not that many establishments offering great food in the area.
The main reason I went to Salt House was for their smoothies. Awesome.
But. depending on who was on smoothie making duty, the taste did vary quite a bit. Still, never had a bad one.
Food was great. Clean, fresh, nothing too crazy western cuisine. The restaurant is on the top floor and is an open plan space with 270 degree views of the lush, green forest.
Service could be a bit slow, but, it's Sri Lanka, you've got nowhere else to be so, what ever.
A very nice little boutique spot in Hiriketiya, we went to look at a room, and they are lovely. Well appointed, with a comfortable mattress, and very clean. The exterior facing wall is only waist height, with the rest - including the bathroom - being open air. This would usually be amazing, but directly outside they have some construction going on (this is written Dec 2016) and you are unable to shut the noise out. However if you plan on being out in the day, or don't mind a bit of construction, it's not a bad spot, although I felt a little overpriced.
We did eat here a couple of times, the smoothie and juice selection is very good, with all sorts of vegan treats available, and ingredients which you don't see often in this area, such as raw cacao, chia seeds, goji berries etc. There is no consistency however, and every day the recipe prepared differently, so if you don't mind surprises I say go for it.
The food is simple but tasty, reasonably vege/vegan friendly, although again, lacking consistency. For example, my dahl, wing bean and eggplant wrap with a side of wedges was a fried onion wrap stuffed with a few potato wedgeswith a side of wedges (haha what the). When I queried it they said they ran out of everything, but they gave me a replacement filling so thought it would be ok. I mean don't get me wrong, I really like potato wedges, and it was actually pretty nice, but I mean if you order a beef burger with a side of fries, but instead of a beef patty they just give you a fries burger with a side of fries, you'd be a little surprised. In the end they gave a small discount.
Overall I'd go back to eat, but I'd be hoping to start seeing some consistency and some communication about availability of ingredients, as although the portions are decent, the food is not cheap.
