Nice temple which has lots of interesting history. We visited when they do the morning prayer at 9.30am and it was packed. Some bits you can’t take pics but there are clear signs of such places where you cannot take photographs. This temple was built to worship the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha. You do get hustled about a bit but that is because people are going there for prayer and specifically for offerings to the Buddha tooth. Worth a visit.
If you are visiting this place, please do come in decent attire since it is a religious sacred place. Even tourists are not allowed to enter if they are not dressed decently. They will be provided with cloths to cover the body and go in.
The best place to park is the Kandy city centre car park where they only charge LKR 50/-. The temple is walking distance from this car park.
Best time to be there is early in the morning. Around 7am its less crowded. Newborn babies are worshipped there on 6 am, 10 am and 7 pm
Most scared place in Sri Lanka. Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha is kept here and people from all around the world come to here. Almost all the tourists who visit Kandy goes to temple of sacred tooth and it is the main attraction of Kandy. When you visit the temple do not forget to wear long trousers or skirts.
The most sacred place to all the Buddhists. This is the temple at which the sacred tooth of Lord Buddha is placed at. Please come to the place with a decent attire, preferably a light colour with decent body covering. Parking is available near the property. Parking at the Kandy City Centre car park is the best, since the temple is at a close proximity to the car park. A walk around the lake is a thing not to be missed. Please avoid bringing any non degradable matter to the temple premises. Littering near the place is prohibited. FYI this is a high security area, so act politely and wisely.

A historical place, one needs a lot of time to spend here. It's a series of many buildings, well managed. Usually groups from local schools and tourists are pretty frequent, that can result in a rush. It's expensive to enter for foreigners, 1500, and for SAARC countries a thousand. One must see it if visiting Kandy.
Not cheap at one thousand five hundred rupees each but well worth it. Lots to see and very very beautiful. Cool places to sit mean that you can easily spend half a day looking at the temple and the museums and watching the worshippers.
The famous Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy is the most venerated place of worship for Buddhists throughout the world. Located just north of the Kandy Lake, the golden-roofed Temple is hard to miss, even from miles away.
Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is believed to house the left upper canine tooth of the Lord Buddha himself. This precious relic attracts white-clad pilgrims, bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani, every day.
According to Buddhists, Lord Buddha’s canine teeth were preserved from the ashes and are respected as the most holy relics of the religion. While touring the complex, one should note the brilliant architectural effort put towards making it a work of art.
In addition to the main shrine, the complex includes many other temples and museums. Beautiful shrines of Buddha are made from marble, along with painted murals reciting the story of Buddhism.
Within the temple complex but outside the main temple, there is a World Buddhism Museum, located inside the buildings that were once the former High Court. In this museum you will see a lot of photographs, models and exhibits showing the spread of Buddhism across the world.
The sacred place where the tooth of the Buddha is kept. We went there on a Saturday and there was a huge queue to see this precious tooth. We declined as we did not feel comfortable waiting and line and our interest in this tooth was probably not as high as the people surrounding us. The grounds are beautiful though. A lot of people were wearing white, cover the shoulders, cover the knees and don't even carry your shoes. The more you know!
One of the most important places in Kandy. As this place carries a tooth of Lord Buddha this is more important to Buddhist people. Yet this is in the 1st place among the tourist attraction places. There are daily pooja and anyone can participate it. Moreover, if you visit this place during the perahara season, this place seem to be very colourful. 💗
A beautiful temple carrying the tooth of the Buddha, and named after it. One of the main attractions of Kandy, along the Bogambara lake, and a must see. A guide is helpful to understand more about the temple. One thing to remember is that you will not be allowed inside if you're wearing shorts, or sleeveless tees, and they must be covered for both men and women.
Lovely place to visit and look around. We went I'm the evening which was very atmospheric seeing the cancels all lit was moving. When ever you go make sure it's during the opening of the doors to see the tooth relic. This happens twice a day morning and evening times are well published. There is the normally scrum to get a view and a squash to get up the stairs with lots of people wanting to view and give offerings. Be prepared for some standing around and being herded in ques but well worth it for the history, and significance of the site
One of the best place to visit in the Sri Lanka. this is a pride of the Sri Lanka. The Lord Buddhas' Sacred tooth Relic is here. Every one in Sri Lanka is going to take the blase from the Tooth Relic. very nice building with Kandyan ancient architecture. and surrounding over there. Must watch place in Sri Lanka.
The Sri Dalada Maligawa or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is one of most important sacred place for buddhists. It was built within the royal palace complex with amazing architectural designs, marvelous wall painting and awesome sculpture . Really interesting if you could attend early morning very first " තේවාව " at around 5.45 AM and could consecrate milk rice. Also could worship tooth relic. Better if you could bring and offer White Roses . Only white roses will use for wash tooth relic !! නමෝ බුදධාය!!
We loved our visit to the temple. Although busy with both tourists and locals we had a guide that easily maneuvered us past several of the queues. He also had some nice anecdotes and stories to share. The temple as a whole is impressive with all the art work and colors. I would suggest paying the 1500-2000 for a guide it makes it a better experience although they do tend to rush you a bit.
This temple is undoubtedly high on the list for all Buddhists. Having said that it is a quaint and a peaceful temple to meditate and offer prayers, irrespective of one's religion or faith. The lake besides the temple ensures the quaintness. Even little touches like absence of plastic covers for the floral offerings, go a long way. A must stop!
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is one of the very sacred Buddhist religious place in beautiful Kandy. It has a long history & you can acknowledge about the historical value and it's stories.
There are small museums related to the temple. Famous Kandy procession("Kandy Esela Perahera") is held ceremonially, every year.
Highly disciplined place. And a very important place culturally and religiously, for Buddhists. You can't enter wearing short/body revealing clothes as same as other Buddhists temples in Sri Lanka. White & light colour clothes are worn as a symbol of purity.
The greatest heritage in Sri Lanka. If you're hoping to visit this sacred place please wear a white and a well covered dress. The tooth relic of Buddha can be worshipped at this sacred place. Great place where you can be at silence and to get a relief to your busy life. Great place for meditation also.
One of the most beautiful temple in Sri Lanka, I can't decide between the cave temple in Dambula or this one. They are both breathtaking. Lots of scams at the entrance for outfit, so bring your proper outfits!
You will enjoy every details of this marvelous site!
I went here and was impressed by the power and energy when the morning offerings were made. We had a guide who knew where to stand when the people came through with the food and when the doors were opened. We managed to get around at just the right times. We got there at 9am with the morning ceremony taking place at 9.30. I'm glad I visited while in Sri Lanka and I'm not religious at all.
What a place! We were lucky to go on a day and time when we managed to see a large part of what is on offer. We had a fantastic tour with more history than I can now recall. And we managed to get to see the Golden Buddha statue. Despite the many tourists, the temple maintained it's serenity and peace.
I have been here only twice. It is the holiest temple in Sri Lanka, since it has the Buddha tooth relic. It is a very living place and one can just sit in peace and observe the mass of humanity offering flowers and the other ceremonies here. The relic is displayed and worshipped once or twice a day. There is also a big festival once a year when the relic is carried in a procession. There are a few museums in the vicinity including the international Buddhist museum, which is also worth seeing.
