Somawathiya Chaitya, a stupa  containing a relic of the tooth of the Buddha, is situated within the park. The park was created on 2 September 1986, having been originally designated a wildlife sanctuary on 9 August 1966.The park is home to many megaherbivores. The national park is located 266 kilometres (165 mi)north-east of Colombo.

Right tooth relic is enshrined here. Technically this place is as much important as Kandy Tooth Relic temple. But it is in a difficult place to reach.

Somawathiya (Somawathi Chethiya)  was built in 2nd century BC and this stupa is said to enshrine the right tooth relic of Lord Buddha.
According to chronicles, prince Giri-aba and princess Somawathi (sister of King Kavanthissa) lived on a small community called “Somapura” on the beds of Mahaveli River. Price Giriaba constructed Somawathi Chethiya on the request of his wife who wanted to engage in religious activities. Upon completion of the Stupa, the prince requested a monk named Mahinda for some “dathu” to be kept in the relic chamber of the stupa. Maha Thera Mahinda gave him the right tooth relic of Lord Buddha.

A sacred place of Buddhists. Good access road.
Visiting in the morning and the evening is recommended due to high temperature in day time(You cannot wear shoes around the pagoda).
Anyone can visit who loves history and nature.
Wild elephants, deer and peacocks can be seen easily (premises is protected by an electrical fence).
