The ancient Shiva lingam inside is considered the most sacred structure inside the Shiva devalaya. Hindus still come to worship this place.

This is an interesting Hindu temple to Shiva. There was a Hindu practitioner there when I visited, and he said a prayer for me and smudged my forehead. I wasn't expecting this experience, but added to the adventure. Small temple though set back a ways from the main road.

This is the oldest building in Polonnaruwa as it dates back to the brief South Indian Chola dynasty period (around 1070) when the Indian invaders established the city. This is one of few Hindu temples on the grounds. Because it is among the few buildings built entirely of stone, it is basically in the same condition as when it was built.
