Nice local market. In the heart of Colombo, Sri Lanka, is the madness of Pettah Market.
It’s possibly the best place in Colombo to get initiated into the local Sri Lankan hustle and bustle, to ingest the sounds and smells, and to get a flavor of life in Colombo.
Pettah is Colombo's biggest, most functional market space. It's loud, crowded and infinitely full of interesting and useful things - it's one of those places you either love or you hate.

Amazing local street market = Must Go! You can buy almost everything and anything there. It's jam packed there so be ready to have very close contact with the locals. Locals are extremely friendly so make sure you smile back :)

It's such a vibrant place! We got a bag of fresh guava for 50 Rs. The guy gave us few pieces more just because. We had fresh guava juice for 160 Rs.

The market is next to a major bus stop as well. Super convenient.

The Pettah Market also called Manning Market is an open market in the suburb of Pettah in the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The entrance to the Pettah Market is marked formally by a tall monument in the centre of a roundabout, known as the Khan Clock Tower which was built by the family of Framjee Bhickajee Khan, an eminent Parsi family from Bombay who used to have substantial business interests in the country and who also owned the Colombo Oil Mills.

The Colombo Old Town Hall & Museum, which was built by the prominent Muslim Arasi Marikar Wapachie Marikar, is located at Kayman's Gate, so named because the Dutch used to stock crocodiles at Beira Lake to prevent their slaves from escaping. Today the building acts as a post office on the ground floor, and as a museum on the upper floor. Outside, there is an exhibit of old steam engines.

Most of the businesses in Pettah are dominated by Muslims who specialize in trading of goods and the Tamil people who have migrated from India traders who specialize in gold and jewelry shops. At the end of pettah is sea street which is Sri Lanka s gold market where people all around Sri Lanka come to purchase jewellery . It is a long street of jewellery shops with hundreads of shops next to one another. There are also some jewellery shops in main street gaspa junction.

The most recognizable building in the Pettah market is the candy-striped Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque (also known as The Red Mosque) which was built in 1909.

There are range of goods and sellers do retail and wholesale. Mainly cash business and accept cheques for wholesale business from trusted partners. Clothing items, electronic and electrical items, watches, household and kitchen items are mainly product range. Genuine and replica products are available. Business time is 9:30am to 6:00 pm on weekdays. Most of sellers are open on Saturday. Some sellers do business on Sunday. There are no parking. Busy and crowded one-way roads on business hours.

This place is really good for buy all the types of your needs for cheap prices. Even we can buy some goods which are not available in towns. There are so many sellers. But many goods don't have fixed price. So before you by something better to check price in several places and get the cheapest one. Market is always crowded during the daytime except Sundays.

Popular for retail trading and accessories, clothing and various types of goods. Majority of the shops are operating on Monday to Friday during 9.30am - 6.00pm. Some of the shops are opening on Saturdays 9.30am up to 12noon or may be up to 6.00pm. Majority of the shops are not operating on Government public holidays and Sundays. Street is a one way for the vehicles and heavily traffic and crowded during trading days. It's rare or hard to find a parking slot on the street and none of the shops have entrances for wheel chairs.

Economic shopping for kitchen needs. Not good for prepared food due to hyginical reasons. A lot of domestic flies. Can buy almost everything for a reasonably lower price. Also a dusty place which is unavoidable due to the warm, sunny tropical weather.

The new Road system is an advantage but still traffic is worse during day. Which they had built high rise building and had more facilities in the buildings. It's hotter than outside when inside market shops. Prices are cheap..
