NIE is considered a premier teacher education institute in Sri Lanka. However, for the past few years, it has not earned a good name and it is generally known as a place where there are adequate facilities for educational development but they are not properly utilised. This institute has become more politicised and the general public tends to believe that NIE wastes a lot of public funds rather than it helps promote education in the island.
