Religious place with beautiful antient carvings . Historical advance and nice lake view.
Nalanda Gedige (නාලන්දා ගෙඩිගේ ) is an ancient complete stone building. It is believed that this is the central point of Sri Lanka. This building was an ancient temple constructed in between 8th to 10th century with pallava hindu style and then believe to have been used by Buddhists. There are several stone buddhist stone statues can be seen here. It is a well preserved archaeological site and situated in an attractive place ner to the nalanda lake.
Another ancient place in Sri Lanka.
They say the Gedige was lifted up manually some time back.
Surrounding was beautiful. Easy to locate.
It's very special temple because of it's unique architecture. Also this location believe to be the centre of country. This is very close to main road. Just one or two km from the main road.
Nalanda Gedige ( sinhala:නාලන්දා ගෙඩිගේ ) ( Tamil: நாலந்த கெடிகே; Nālanda Gedige ) is an ancient complete stone building near Matale, Sri Lanka. Its mid base in our contry. This building was an ancient Hindu Temple constructed in between 8th to 10th century with dravidian architecture ( Pallava style ) and then believe to have been used by Buddhists.[1][2] Also some scholars describe this building is a dravidian architecture dedicated to a Mahayanaa cult with pronounced Trantric learning and known for an ancient monument of possible Vajrayana (Tantric) Buddhist affinities.
Nalanda Gedige is designed like a Hindu temple with a mandapa, an entrance hall (originally roofed), a short passage to a bare cello, and an ambulatory round the holy center. There is no sign of Hindu gods today, however, and the temple is said to have been used by Buddhists.
The richly decorated facade sections, laboriously reassembled in 1975, are predominantly in the South Indian style, and may have originated in the eighth to 11th centuries, but cannot be precisely dated. However, the god Kubera appears on the south side of the tympanum over the sanctuary, and this is a feature only to be found in Sri Lanka.
Ancient historical location Buddhist religious values. Very different erotic scluptures are available as nearly equilent to Indian sculpture on same period.
Worth a visit for history lovers.. very old temple..
Not much informative but the architecture is worth noticing
The place is really calm and quiet. There is no ticket fee to enter for tourists or locals. The monument has been shifted from it's original location due to the hydro power project carried in the adjacent lake. There is a special carving depicting two lovers in the bottom of the main monument.
For peace and tranquillity perfect place for meditation. And one can see why this was selected to have Therawada Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism and mixed with Hinduism. This was done by a king that time period to have these 3 philosophies together. Absolute peace.
Ancient value place.consider the center of Sri Lanka.
This stone building constructed in nearly 9th century based on Pallava architectural style. Someone believe this building is constructed in the central point of Sri Lankan land.
This is the center of Sri Lanka. This is a beautiful historical place. Ilike this place. Because there are beautiful statues in here.
Located in a calm and quiet environment. It appears to have been constructed between 8th and 10th centuries. Completely built with stone and richly decorated with rock carvings.
Beautiful place. Very calm and quite. Has an ancient value.Considered as the center point of ancient Sri Lanka.
Beautiful archeological temple, really quiet and simple place with an emotional old Buddha inside it. Site worth the visit
Nalanda Gedige has been rebuilt while making Nalanda reservoir which is believed to be located in the centre of Sri Lanka
How said historians of SL do not know who exactly built this precious temple and say it was built around the 10th century which is nonsense. There is no dravidian influence or architecture but this was built at least over 4500 years ago by indrajit (great king ravanas son) to worship Nikumbila Devi. Some govt scumbags of SL about 35 years ago moved Nalanda Gedige temple from its original place which resulted in the loss of universal powers attracted by this temple. Original Nalanda gedige was built on the exact centre of the earth which is why it's of utmost importance. SL as a country has been going down the drain since this was moved few decades ago and will continue to slide unless until its moved back to its original place. Careful examination here would show us various extraterrestrial objects and planetary systems which says a lot about the relationship ancient hela (original Sinhalese) had with beings from other planets.
It is a Buddhist temple build on between 8-10 centuries in Pallava structural method.
It is located 1km from the main road (A9).
Peaceful place to visit.
Great historical place this rare architecture shows the combination of Buddhism and Hinduism must see
Our values..Have to protect..
If it had not been for our local guide we would not have visited this place. He told us whether we wanted to go to the center of Sri Lanka, and we said YES! An archaeological site with interwoven architectural styles that includes Tantric Buddhist carvings and Hindu elements. One might want to take a closer look at the carvings. A small Stupa is the only other structure near Nalada Gedige. A quiet place well worth a visit.
most historical place of sri lanka
Great place to see. Not as impressive as some of the other buildings in this part of the countrybut it is acknowledged as the geographical centre.
