Nice colonial style hotel just outside of Colombo

This is a very nice, old colonial type beach side hotel. Famed for the stories of Lady Lavania, the mistress (possibly one of many) of the governor, including hidden walkways and tunnels. More on this story can be obtained from hotel staff or from poster-hangings on the hotel corridors.

Popular for weddings and events.

Pros.
-Building design - takes you back in time.
-Lovely views of the sea
-nice beach side sea food restaurant
-Good food at all restaurants - great buffet as well.
-Vegan buffet on fool moon days

Cons.
-Beach side properties need to be regularly maintained and update - which i have not seen being done here.

One of most ancient proteges 05 star hotels in town! What a majestic place to be! U can watch a nice sunset every evening from the beach side! Rooms are so elegant and food is delicious too! Every evening you can listen live music around the pool corner! The ballroom looking fascinating and u can organize a big event there too! If you are in love with the sea beach, this is the ideal place for you!

I always loved this hotel and have lot of wonderful memories. This time I went for a wedding. Had great food just like always. Loved the choice of salads. The hotel itself is lovely.

I just used the pool for the day which was moderately priced. Very good views from the poolside but it was very busy with limited sun loungers. The pool itself is not suitable for lengths as it's more a holiday makers pool. It was very clean and well maintained. I was a bit disappointed as they didn't have banana smoothies but was a minor complaint. They were very reluctant to give us towels even when offering to pay extra to use them.

Variety of restaurants catering different types of cuisine. Lovely banquet hall which has preserved the its historic identity. Lovely beach view and the seafood restaurant is a must try.

Few days ago I had the chance to visit this historical romantic hotel (Hope everyone knows the Metland- Lavinia story). Yes it's elegant and colonial architecture is visible everywhere. I expected more but only saw the oldness. Anyway the view from the balcony is amazing. The staff is also helpful. food menu is also great

As a frequent visitor to the "unique" Mt. Lavinia Hotel, which I consider to be the ideal home away from home, I was sad to leave Mt. Lavinia Hotel after spending 1.5 weeks in Room 559 overlooking the Indian Ocean and city sights of Colombo.

Nothing has changed since I last visited in May 2017 and I was delighted to return to Room 559.

The Hotel reminded me of a well run ship with top calibre people.

The friendly staff at the entrance and Reception made my day. It goes without saying that all aspects of this magnificent Hotel is managed by knowledgeable and efficient staff. The staff at the Governor's Restaurant and Terrace were impeccable and served delicious food.

My compliments go to Housekeeping because the room was cleaned well and included fresh towels and linen. The public toilets in the Hotel were always clean and well stocked with toiletries.

Housekeeping should follow up on defrosting the bar fridge and ensuring that the batteries on the remote are replaced.

Went for lunch buffet (12.30pm - 3pm) at the Governor's Restaurant. Although the spread is not big as other business buffet in Colombo, food was delicious and we'll prepared. Expect to pay around LKR 1900 with tax per person. The old lady who served us was very friendly, attentive and prompt. Value for money buffet in Colombo. By the way they do high tea too 3pm-5pm.

Located near the beautiful beach and of course this has been a historical hotel and a go to hotel for alot of foreigners Service is good, cleanliness I'd give 6.5/10, food is always superb here Sunsets are always beautiful near the pool

This is an amazing place. It has a history more than 100 years.. View is amazing as you get the beach, nice restaurant with beach view.. Even the buffet is good with collection and reasonable price too.

what a perfect place. The hotel is amazing. especially the terrace with the pool! The food is OMG! I loved the buffet! so worth it!! it even has its own beach.By far the prettiest near Colombo. It feels like a 5 star hotel. it's huge with a very friendly staff. The direct ocean room was amazing. I loved the balcony and the sound of the waves! Totally recommend it! Whenever I'm back in Sri Lanka I will be back to this hotel.

Amazing hotel with amazing more than 200 years history, of course history of love Cuisine, hospitality, SPA and the beach are unique. Very recommended for active and leisure tourist, who is searching for the " smell " of beautiful and luxary life.

They say old places has a charm, this is usually true but they need to be clean. Here you better take your detail whipper with you as the room and the outlets are not well cleaned and the service is not what you expected. They just monopolize on their name and location and thing they can charge any amount and guest will just take it. Hospitality landscaping is changing in Colombo and their are better location to spend them money and get a better service.

Though the hotel is not a big ass one, it has comfy spacious rooms. Food is always great at this hotel. But as others also suggest, cleanliness and ambiance could be improved.

A beautiful colonial building with it's own beach. The service is good and staff are friendly. The ocean view rooms come with a balcony overlooking the Indian ocean.
On the negative side, the rooms are dated and crying for renovation.

The hotel is a beautiful colonial place with a lot of history. Said to be the home of a British governor back in the day, the hotel (and its surrounding) is named after his mistress Lavinia. Sunsets at the terrace are recommended while the pool is a nice e place to wind down towards the evening. Recommend food at the "Fish Market" (the hotel's sea food restaurant) which is about 3000 per person.

I think this is a beautiful old place that retains its character and history. The staff are superbly polite and helpful and the food is amazing! The rooms are to an excellent standard, not too modern but sizable and clean with a HUGE bed and a breathtaking see view. The beach front restaurant and bars are stunning. Only had 1 night here but loved it.

Avoid Indian buffet night. Not the best of it. Does need to improve standards.

Comparison to food quality is poor. The variety for desserts was amazing. But the core food range is limited.

For the ambience you might stick to this.

Out best hotel experience till now. The hotel has the old world charm along with contemporary modern standards. Direct ocean rooms are the best. The private beach, the pool, the spa, the shacks were all amazing. Really romantic place. Plus there is a train station next door which you can use to catch the coastal train. The sounds of the ocean literally sing you to sleep and wake you up gently
