Shouldn't go late in the evening as there are strict guidelines to exit the park at 6:30 pm.

Minneriya National Park. Ideal lace to see elephants. if you travel during drought season you will able to see hundreds of Elephants. you can hire a safari jeep from the park entrance or Habarana town and then you can enter to Park after buying tickets from the Park entrance.
if you are interesting in Bird watching you can see considerable number of wading bird species in the park marshland edges. crocodiles and aquatic tortoise is common sight in the park.

Minneriya National Park belongs to North Central Province of Sri Lanka. The location is 182km’s away from Colombo.

In 1938 this area is declared as a wildlife sanctuary and later on in 12th Aug 1997 it was declared as a national park by the government.

The highlights of this park is, the historic Minneriya Tank built by King Mahasen in the third century AD, and this tank and catchment area is belonging to the national park. And the wildlife, mainly the elephants and also famous for birds.

Minneriya National Park is one of main site visits and safari location for both foreigners and locals. In the dry zone, there are 100’s of jeeps in the park for safari to see mainly the elephants, in big herds together with baby elephants in different ages and sizes. Even can see sometimes very young baby elephants few months old and this will be very nice scenery and can see over the baby elephants for hours without boring or tired.

During the dry season, it is normal to see 150 to 200 elephants gathering on the grass fields of the edge of the reservoir. According to the reports, there are around 700 elephants migrate to the park area in sometimes, and they come from Wasgamuwa National Park, Kaudulla National Park and Huruluwewa National Park. The elephants in the area always moving from time to time with food availability to different parks.

Other animals available in the park are as below: there are two endemic monkeys of Sri Lanka: purple-faced langur and toque macaque. Large herbivorous mammals such as Sri Lankan sambar deer and Sri Lankan axis deer frequently found in the park. Jeep drivers say they have seen very rare the endangered species such as Sri Lankan leopard and Sri Lankan sloth bear inhabit in Minneriya. Minneriya is one of the areas where the gray slender loris is reportedly found in Sri Lanka.

The Minneriya reservoir is an important habitat for large water birds such as lesser adjutant, painted stork, and spot-billed pelican. Minneriya is a dormitory for many resident as well as migrant bird species. Flocks of 2000 little cormorants have been reported. Great white pelican, ruddy turnstone, and grey heron are the other water birds here. Among the endemic birds are Sri Lanka junglefowl, Sri Lanka hanging parrot, brown-capped babbler, Sri Lanka grey hornbill, black-crested bulbul and crimson-fronted barbet. The number of threatened birds recorded from this national park is 11.

Amphibians of Fejervarya pulla and Polypedates cruciger have been recorded from the area. There are eight species of endemic reptiles, and all of them are considered threatened. Painted-lip lizard and Lankascincus fallax are among them. Saltwater crocodile, Indian python, Asian water monitor, and Bengal monitor are among the other reptiles. Four of the fresh water fishes recorded from Minneriya are endemic to Sri Lanka.

Tips for safari:

Mostly people do safari early in the morning or afternoon. Morning safari starts 5:30am – 9:00am from Habarana or Sigiriya area and afternoon safari starts around 2:30pm – 6:00pm, Other times also possible to go for the safari, but you will see less animals then. And if compare morning safari and evening safari, you can elephants if you do evening safari. But sometimes other way also can happen.

Great place. I visited this park around 10AM. I saw lots of wild elephants and deers.Minneriya National Park is a national park in North Central Province of Sri Lanka. The area was designated as a national park on 12 August 1997, having been originally declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938.

Best place to see the Asian elephants. In August you can witness here the World largest gathering of the Asian Elephants.
Only disappointment is the crowd. Sometimes there are more jeeps than elephants.

Best time to go is in the afternoon safari which costs around 80-100$ for two in a private vehicle. We saw a crocodile, owl, tortoise, eagles, peacocks, deers and elephants. The whole safari tour took around 2 hours and was well worth the time and money! Must visit if in Dambulla area

Nice park. This is one of the big national park in Sri Lanka which has very largest land and many wild animals and birds. There are Jeep safari in this place which closed at 5.00pm. We have to pay to enter this national park. Low cost for local citizens and little bit higher to foreigners. We can see elephants probably at evening time through Jeep safari. We can enjoy with wild life.

Lots of elephants seen in groups. Great Experience. Advised to be cautious while travelling in the highways nearby during dark hours as elephants seen to be crossing the roads. Usually the elephants stay calm and pose no danger.

I love this National Park . while you are moving you can watch plenty of wild elephants. But make sure to keep your distance. you cannot use your own vehicles. you have to hire a safari jeep from there. But the experience is unforgettable. Before you go there , better to call and ask them. Sometimes park is closing due to some situations.

Great place to spot tons of elephants and water buffaloes. Gets crowded on weekends with locals. Mandatory 'Volunteer' guide quite pushy for tip and expects certain amount. This leaves a bad aftertaste.

A wonderful place to go on a safari in Sri Lanka. You can observe lot of elephants with their varius activities such as eating bathing drinking and flushing water. You can go on a safari in morning or evening. But I suggest evening is better. If you are lucky you will be able to see some other animals also. However safari in minneriya National park is one of best experience that you can enjoy in Sri Lanka.

A place you must visit of you want to see herds of Wild Elephants. You have to hire a safari jeep to get in to the park. And if you have a off-road vehicle, you can use it. But if you are using your own vehicle you have to get the assistant from a guide.
Lots of beautiful sceneries can be seen inside the park. I hope it is the best place to see hundreds of wild elephants in their natural habitat in Sri Lanka.

Come see the worst safari in the world. First of all, you will hardly see any animals - just 5-6 elephants from REALLY far away. Second, the guides just drive around, without explaining anything about the wildlife and ecosystem. Third, the roads are really bad. I'm not expecting a nice paved road, but this is painful. Literally, have painkillers handy if you're coming. Seriously. No freaking animals!!!!
