The building is well built with modern facilities, but it gets very crowded the service is pretty average.
If you are going to get your passport done this is the procedure
Get an application form and fill it accordingly.
If you are going for the first time (Documents needed)-
Original Birth Certificate, NIC, Letter of service (If you are employed), Marriage certificate (Only for ladies because the surname changes), Drivers license (Not a must)
If you are going for renewal-
All of the above plus the old passport.

*Make sure to take photocopies of all of the above documents before going there for your convenience.

As you enter the building there is photo counter you take your photo it's just Rs.250/= (First they take the photo then when you take it you have to pay)
After that you are supposed to take all of the documents plus the photo to the adjoining building 2nd Floor and get a token and show all the documents for approval they will check all the documents and stapler them then wait till your number is called and once they call you go in and hand over the documents give your finger print and make the payment.

The Parking is a bit far from the building.

After traveling around the world for 3 years I've found here in Sri Lanka the best and most organized immigration office with smiling and very helpful staff.
Location and building is clean, clear and people aren't stress or rushing. Good job!

Pretty easy to apply for a visa, yourself. Don't pay people, a broker or a middleman. Only the official cashier, in the payment area.

    1) go to the 4 th floor and fill in the form(bring your own pen), 1 photo, passport size.
    2) glue your picture and get a token at the info desk. Glue is available.
    3) first area, wait till your number is on the screen, and than to area B, visa interview.
    4) after the interview, go to the cashier and pay.
    5) wait until they call your token number and get your passport, with your new visa. This takes a little while(2 hours). A good time to go out for lunch.

It takes 4 till 5 hours, mostly, from start till finish. Good luck.

The new building is very good. The parking place area is bit far away.
There are big delays is their work. On 27/3/2017, I went to do a payment for Dual citizenship. It took about 2 hours, just to do the payment at the cashier. There was only one inefficient cashier with one assistant. I had to fill up a form, then sit and wait for 2 hours. They should increase the number of cashiers and their efficiency, to handle the big crowd.

Went to get a new passport. Impressive service. No one ever get lost there, if you ever needed any info or need to be guided, there is always a person to ask anywhere in the premises, and they give clear guidelines to how to get your required service done. All the things are done in a very organized way.

New place. Enough space. Nice layout. Facilities are here fairly improved.
However same staff with old attitude 😞. so lot of embarrassments from in to out. Please practice your patience and go.
Restrooms are already broken, dirty walls, foot marks up to waist height in walls. So we too have responsibility to keep clean and tidy.

Staffs are doing their job heavily but not well. There is no any guideline to get a new passport or nobody give correct guidelines. We have to go to so many places to give our details. So cunning peoples are trying to get our money. Online photos are taken by private photo Laboratories it is not suitable it should be in the immigration department.

This place has really got better. There is still a lot of improvement to be done on the back-end.

This place was highly disorganised. People waited for hours and are packed. Flow of people and waiting lines were not managed at all. Numbering systems for waiting was ridiculous. I was asked to go to the fees counter to get a payment receipt for zero rupees. Absurd! When they called my number they gave another passport!

This department is still old fashioned and doesn’t adopt and use IT and other modern technology to upgrade their services. They still carry on the paper based methodologies which cause lot of hassles to their clients. They really need to introduce IT based systems and processes in order to deliver efficient and error free services.

Up to submitting my application I had a wonderful service but there after I experienced the worst service I ever had. NIC department ate 6 hrs (11:30am to 5:30pm) of my valuable time. Just waiting to hear my name over their speaker.

This is very organized place. But at the end where passport issuing counters are like Mannin Market. Still similar to the old passport office in Colombo Fort. Immigration office staff habits cannot remove. They can display the issued passport number. But several officers use loudspeaker to call the people. It's like lottery selling booth in the past.

This note is specially to the Manger of the IT Dept. 3rd Floor, 5th Room. Sorry i am not aware of your name. on 29th Sept. 2017, my husband had to come to you to get my son's name corrected on the passport which was under processing. You have taken up our case/matter personally and gave full attention to it at every stage. Even though the passport was under issuing stage, you gave our set of passports priority and got the amendment done with no extra charges. Helped with the documents too. You are energetic, polite, pleasant and so helpful even to give my husband a call when the docs are ready to pick up. None of us knew you personally. But, your service was beyond comparison even to a private sector institute. Thank you so much !!

The building is beautiful and great. Yet for copying a single document you have to go back downstairs, out of the building to a nearby shop.
The visa extension office is on the fourth floor so it was a pretty long run, to go back to the photocopy shop to upstairs again.. if u can build a 19 floor high building, there should be a photocopy place in it too!
The staff are usually not very kind and happy.
However it was a faster process than the earlier place!

Comparing this new office to a previous one, I might say that new one is like heaven. Service is much faster, more convenient, you just do everything nicely without any problems. Not like a previous office, which was a nightmare. Definitely I'm glad that new office is operating. Thank you!

I am very happy with the new building and with it's new service. One advice, The photocopy shop and the studio is in the ground floor. It's at the entrance. Take all the necessary copies (copies of BC, NIC, Previous passport's information page copy, letter of confirmation from your employer and better send your educational/professional certificate if you a professional; doctor, engineer, lawyer, lecturer etc.)

Take all the copies with the filled application (You can download it from the website) and go to the 2nd floor for all countries. Take a token and wait till the number is called. Good Luck.

I did't find good washrooms there. Cafeteria foods are fine.

The new building is very good. But still there is no parking place. We have to go for private car parks near by.

The new building is excellent and the processes have improved a lot. Most employees are quite friendly and wrong to help.

Few things to make sure before you go there for a passport application. Take your photo from an authorized studio ahead of time as it can take a very long time for the photo to be added to their system. Took nearly an hour for me. The welfare studio that is inside has an enormous queue.

Make sure that you take extra photocopies of each document that you're required to submit. If you're adding your designation, there's a high chance that they're going to ask for a copy of your degree certificate.

If you're in a rush (to get your passport or for a shorter wait time in general), opt for the one day service. The queues go faster and you have the option of getting your passport couriered to you.
