Baobab (Adansonia digitata) is native to Africa, Madagascar and Australia. Believed to be brought to Sri Lanka by the Arab traders around 1300 AD. This specific tree is believed to be around 700 years old. Steps must be taken to preserve this miracle of nature.

This is one of main tourism point in Mannar because this is the biggest tree in South Asia. This one has been taken to Lanka by Arabic sealers. In the Mannar island can be seen two three Baobab trees and those are not that much bigger than this tree.

Some people call this the "Elephant tree" simply due to the fact that the bark of it has similarities to elephant skin. It is said that this tree was brought to the country by Arabic traders and its more than 700 years old. This is the most popular out of the very few Baobabs in Sri Lanka. Well worth visiting if you happen to be around Mannar.

The baobabs in Sri Lanka is believed to have been brought by Arabian Traders, there are about 40 Baobab Trees surviving in Sri Lanka, out of which 34 has been identified and measured in Mannar. Most of the trees were calculated to be 300-400 years old. The oldest and the largest baobab is at Pallimunei which is said to be about 800 years old. This tree was calculated 723 years old in the 2003 study. The circumference of the tree is is 19.5 meters and its 7.5 meters tall. This is most popular of the all
