We've definitely seen much worse in Asia. The old part is interesting, it's oblivious they are making an effort at upgrading this place around the bears and monkeys. Probably three star, but I give one extra for their efforts. Easily visited between Vang Vieng and Vientiane, if you have your own (hired) transport.

Lots of animals to see up close and personal. We were told the elephants don't come out till 4:00. Don't know if that is every day or not. There is no map to be had, and the paths meander making the zoo seem larger than it is. I recommend downloading the map from the visitor info page of the zoo website. Regardless, it was a beautiful and pleasant, well shaded walk, which was nice after a ~2 hour van ride from Vientiane. I think it is worth it. A local helped us book a minivan for $55. A tour company was asking $140 for a big van. Just FYI. We left Vientiane at 8:15, arrived at the zoo at 10, spent 3 hours walking around (little kids move slow). There is a shuttle bus that goes around the zoo, stopping at various stations. We will probably reach Vientiane around 4 pm. So it is an all day trip. Cheers.
