It's not really an hospital or a sanctuary. It's a business place with 12 elephants but they seem to be ok. After it was 2 beautiful days with the elephants but it could be better if we stay longer with them. In the 2days trip, we saw the elephants 3 time. 1 for walking, 1 for giving some food at 2 baby elephants and 1 for taking a bath with them on the river.

Staff are very friendly especially “SuK” our tour guide. He is very helpful. They have accommodations so you can stay in the elephant village.

If you care about animal cruelty, do NOT go here. Elephants are wild animals and do not naturally allow humans to ride them. They have to be whipped and electrocuted to be trained into letting people sit on top of them. This is done behind their ears and in between their upper legs so tourists don’t see the scars. They are lashed upwards of 50 times a day to train them to take tourists to the “bathing area” several times a day. It is a huge moneymaker for locals, but it is at the expense of hurting the elephants. Do not be fooled.

What an INCREDIBLE experience. There are not enough wonderful things I could say about the day we spent with the Sanctuary as Mahouts. They love their animals so much and love to share their stories and the conservation efforts they are making. To be so up close and personal with such a magnificent animal was a once in a lifetime experience. The guides were very nice and spoke very good english and the Mahouts were just as friendly! I cannot recommend this place enough!

If you love elephants and want them to be treated with humanity then you should not ride them.
Mandalao Elephant sanctuary is a non riding tour and you should check them out before committing to any other tour.response / report this review -

The actual sanctuary was near our hotel, so we took a boat to it. It was a wonderful meal, over looking the Nam Khan River. They did a really good tour first telling us about the issues facing elephants today. Wild elephants are in danger of stepping on antitank land mines, which don't kill them but amputate them. Or they are sometimes abused by people for work, like clearing forests. Our Mahout was so great, he let me ride on our elephants head, and he decided to sit in the basket or walk and take picture. I understand concerns with elephants as ecotourism, but these were very well cared for, and were able to walk in the wild not some park. We even went swimming, or more accurate, our elephant swam across the river with me on her neck. If your okay with horse back-riding this is for you. If not, a visit to see what they do for injured elephants and the story behind keeping elephants important and safe to and in Laos culture.

Having no experience with elephants we were sceptical if we should go on a elephant ride since we heard private companies were not focused on making the best lives for elephants in SE Asia. After reading the reviews we decided on taking a half day tour with the elephant village. To sum it up we are so grateful that we did it. By the looks of it these elephants are living the best life that they probably could have. Some (or all) if them used to work terrible labour at logging companies but were rescued by the village and only work little each day. The ride itself is not that long but you go bareback so it's a great experience. Our guide Mr. Sou Kanh was so informative and spoke great English, he had answer to every question we got. I could say so much more but you should go there and learn for yourself :) - This is must do if you go to Luang Prabang !

Very good, and though not perfect they say they try to make an effort to be more humane with the elephants, and we'll discuss the changes they've implemented in doing so. No saddles and you ride on the neck. Lots of feeding the elephants, River crossings, bathing the elephants, and a very nice pool with poolside bar.

Super friendly staff. Pick you up at your hotel in an air conditioned mini bus. The ride and the river washing is great. Highly recommend the one day mahout training, it is plenty of time with the elephants. Lunch is provided. Be sure to bring a swimsuit and change of clothes. The elephants are taken care of and treated very well.

I've always wanted to get up and personal with elephants but I didn't want to add to exploitation of elephants. After some research, I booked a tour and I must say I wasn't disappointed. They really care about their animals( don't use howdah and do have a vet caring for elephants heath). The setting of the village itself is beautiful. Mr. Sack who was our guide was amazing, a true professional. Highly recommended
