I'm often cycling through Kampong Thma on my way to Phnom Penh or Vietnam.
As such, this rural city has only got two lousy hotels in the centre, so maybe you think that it's better to brave the hot road another 60 Km to big city Skun? Wrong!
In fact, just 1 Km south of K Thma, you'll find an absolute PEARL: "Romchong Guesthouse". Complete with a pond in the middle (the lilyflowers are sadly gone) and a beautiful view of the rice fields in the back, this hacienda-style, relatively modern building offers a comfortable stay for only 7 USD.
So, this is how you work the friendly staff at this hotel: ask for a corner room at the back (doubles), either on first or second floor. Then inspect the floor-fan for bad sound. If you're not satisfied, they'll carry in a replacement from one of the other rooms- there are plenty.
After this, skip over to the restaurant on the other side of the road (or walk to the sorry city centre), buy a six-pack cheap "Klang Beer" and return home to the comfort of your lousy Samsung flat screen (I totally hate LCD-tv:s, but this is the standard nowadays).
Perhaps you'll like "Romchong" so much that another night in the rice paddies of rural Cam is in order?
