Visiting Banteay Chhmar is a completely different experience from visiting the Angkor temples in the Siem Reap area. Although they come from the same period of time, this temple complex is a fairly remote area of Cambodia, so a relatively small number of visitors make it to this location. Since there are relatively few visitors there is also very little money available for restoration and infrastructure development, in comparison to the large development projects in Siem Reap.

For the foreign visitor, this provides a very unique opportunity to explore and discover the true beauty of a temple that has been protected by the jungle and forgotten for so many years. Banteay Chhmar is not a polished and landscaped tourist attraction, it is an ancient temple that at least for a while longer, is available for the visitor to touch and explore, without being hurried to the next destination.

My advice to all visitors is to still be respectful when visiting these remote temple sites, because the Khmer people respect and worship these temples, the same as the modern age temples they support.

A beautiful temple that is almost deserted. This place is huge and stunning. They have only recently started work on restoring it. A few stone faces like Bayon and some great bas reliefs. It is thought that this temple was used as a practice for some of the work at Bayon.

Well worth the visit to see the town and the temple.
