The Homestay program at Banteay Chhmar is run by the local Community Organisation CBET. It is an incredible experience for anyone who wants to experience the true life of the people who live in rural Cambodia. I suggest trying to stay for at least a few days, so that you can get over the initial shock of being away from western comforts, that we all take for granted. The temples in the area are also quite spectacular but I will save them for another review.

My wife and I recently visited Banteay Chmmar for three days and two nights. We were hosted by the Community Based Tourism program. I can't say enough good things about the experience. We spent two nights in the traditional Khmer home of Mr. Savit Sarin and his wife Chheng Mom. What a treat to get a taste of family life--and the Cambodia beer at the adjacent shop was ice cold!
Our CBT guide was Sopheng Khlout, an exceptionally friendly, energetic, English-speaking local. What a fine fellow! He toured us through both the largely forgotten Banteay Chhmar temple and the adjacent village, introduced me to cassava harvesting, and taught us a few steps of traditional Khmer dancing after a splendid dinner at the BC temple. Our meals were taken at the CBT office and were delicious.
For me, this is what traveling is all about: leaving behind the busloads of tourists and bucket list sites and sampling local life. Kudos to CBT for making this possible!response / report this review -

This is such a fantastic project and it was so great to support the community and meet so many lovely people. My husband and I stayed 2 nights and had a tour around the temples. What we enjoyed most was learning more about the civil war and about how it is to live in Cambodia today. The food was great, the hosts were lovely, it was such a cute village - can't recommend it enough!

Incredible community based tourism experience in rural Cambodia.
Highlights include beautiful and secluded temples, lunch near a serene reservoir, and warm, welcoming people.

Nice place to visit if you like old Ankor ruins most of it is rubble but it's a relaxing walk around. Shaded and few tourist.
