Friendly staff, beautiful scenery, outdoor hot springs is top notch, food was fantastic! The only downside is the converted dining room was noisy when the doors open and close. Hot water and heater was hard to figure out.

We absolutely loved our stay at Nanten-en. We were greeted right away at the door by someone who spoke very good English, which was a nice surprise as this ryokan is located in the small village of Amami. The ryokan itself is easy to get to; it's a short walk from Amami Station off the Nankai line. Our overnight stay was incredible; every detail was meticulously prepared and we felt extremely welcome and comfortable.

A great little get away from the busy city life by relaxing at a Japanese hot spring. It's very traditional in style so don't be shy. Great food, but you have to be willing to try new items beyond the "Western" plattte. I really recommend the plum wine! It's also a poke stop (one of two in the whole town ;) ).

The rooms are beautiful and traditional with modern conveniences. The staff are nice and helpful, but with the formality, the atmosphere feels constrained. They brought us snacks and hot tea after we returned, and even came to greet us as we arrived at the hotel each day. The location is a few train stops away from any noteworthy city, and trains come every fifteen minutes or so. You can't get back into the hotel if you're out past ten. Pretty much everything is in English, so even if you don't know Japanese you can understand details like how to use the public baths properly--but there are no private baths, so you must learn if you want to bathe.

Excellent experience, but I have no idea why japanese reviews are just soso, maybe they have higher standard for this kind of hotel, Anyway compare with similar price hotels in EU, Nanten-en absolutely deserve 5-stars
