300 year old tea store with a big selection of Matcha including a local selection. You can drink tea at the attached tea house or participate in a demonstration of the correct way of preparing matcha and taste a small sample in the end.

Best tea shop in Kyoto with green tea blends, very good quality. They have a bar with specials. This is your place if you go crazy for matcha.

Excellent Japanese tea shop with great knowledge regarding tea. Perfect for travelers as they had a staff who spoke English well. I was a little sad that I couldn't sample some of the matcha prior to ordering so I wouldn't know the exact taste of what I would be buying. They did have one thing to smell but that isn't as much of an experience compared to tasting it regularly.

Very nice place, a traditional shop yet with a dash of modern opulence. Staff was really friendly, tea was nice. you can only taste 1 tea per person..

The staff was incredibly knowledgable and helped us make great decisions. We sat in the tea room and were treated to a one-on-one training about how to prepare and poor our tea selections.

The portions will be smaller than your average coffee shop back home. The experience of trying ancient teas exclusive to Kyoto is where the value lies. The flavors are very unique and probably not what Westerners are usually accustomed to, which adds to the experience if you're adventurous.

The fact that Ippodo has been selling tea in Kyoto for 300 years and was the official tea provider of the imperial family made the experience even more special. Highly recommended Old Kyoto experience, even if you're not a tea-fanatic.

Great choice of high quality tea in many varieties/grades. Friendly and patient staff assisting in making the right pick from their large choice of teas. A tasting room as well as a small cafe are part of the shop.

Came here to bye some tea for my brother. Didnt know the large amount of variations there are among matcha. They have a nice pamphlet the to tell you what you want and you just tell them and they will prepare them and label them for you. Axel was very helpful. Definitely would recommend this famous tea store. Its very easy to spend a lot here :) but worth it. You can also just order a tea to go

We ordered a tea that is only available in Kyoto, don't quite remember the name. They provide a soft or hard sweet to go with the tea. The serving portion of the tea is small, so don't expect alot. The tea is not prepared in front of you, but if you get a counter seat you can see them prepare it. If you are able to sample more than one tea definitely try it. Cost wise they range from 600 - over 1,000 yen.
