This hotel was in a perfect place with one of the best views from a hotel you can have in Japan. Just a spectacular view. The service was typical for Japanese hotels-- 4-5 stars-- and the breakfast buffet was very good. The reason why it gets the 4 star rating is the look of the hotelvery plain, white tiled and lacking in the type of character that a hotel in such a spot should have. It does have onsen which is also great, but its more of a typical western hotel that happens to have a small onsen. The onsen view is, again, really impressive. It is a great value considering the cost though gets much more expensive during peak season
This place was newly renovated and is amazing. We opted for a Japanese style ocean view room, which turned out to be very spacious - much larger than the Western style rooms. The futons were brand new "air weave" style & super comfortable to sleep on. The breakfast buffet was delicious. The outdoor onsen was a bit small but has a spectacular view of the sea.
This hotel is situated on a hill top and has amazing views from the room. The staff were very courteous and the facilities were great. They have a swimming pool, spa and hot spring too. There is a beach right at the foot of the hill. A shuttle bus service is available to take customers from Shimoda station to the hotel and back. Even if you dont get the bus, taxis can take you for about 900 yen. The breakfast was very good and had lots of varieties.
Overall a great place to stay at Shimoda!
Very friendly and welcoming staff since we arrived offering us all the information we ask for and more. The hotel was just reopened after complete renovation end of April. The lobby, rooms, hot springs and restaurant all seems new. We asked for 2 connected rooms and we got them, all rooms have balcony facing the ocean it is breathtaking view. The swimming pool is great but the water was not heated so bit cold end of June. The beach near the hotel was rocking so we went to Tatadohama beach by car which was super clean. The hot springs for ladies and men both they have indoor and outdoor. Tip for Shimoda: check if the swimming pool is open because each hotel is different it is not open around the year even the beach lifeguard only from mid July to end of August.
Awesome view from the ocean facing rooms. I have seen comments about hotel being dated. It would seem renovation is now complete. Rooms are nice and new, everything is clean and well taken care of. Staff is polite and respectful and there are a few that speak English. Pool is clean and it's great relaxing in the chair by it's side. Was able to book room at a great price, very early May. Access to a small beach is as easy as taking stairs down to the ocean front. There is an onsen, nicely split between indoors and the outside. Outside part is done with the wood, has a great view of the ocean and palm trees. Restaurant downstairs requires reservation, don't forget to make one with the front desk. Food is great, there must be well trained chefs. I have also given a try to the in-room massage, it's good, no-nonsense shiatsu.
Everything is awesome!
Amazing lagoon-based hotel on Shimoda Bay. Currently a monument to the 60s high life, it will be modernized over six months in 2016-2017. One of the best views of a tropical verdant mountainaide.
The only reason i went there was price, i got a special offer. If i would need to pay full price (60k yen) I would just start to cry. Good: amazing view if you get a room on the ocean side, nice entrance with BIG windows, and thats probably it. Building need a maintenance, everything is worn and a bit dirty, rooms are old and smelly. I think it was great hotel in the 80s and after economy went down looks like they simply could not afford to maintain it. For some it might be interesting as a "museum", so you can see how japanese hotels looked like 30 years ago. 2/5 because of value for money.
Rooms a bit dated, what with separate unmovable beds (felt like in we were in an early 60's movie) but what a view. Staff very nice though little English spoken, speaking of which we saw no other Westerners whilst we were there (not a bad thing). Morning buffet was delightfully traditional.
Everything feels like it was built in the 80's. Apart from that there's an amazing view, and it's a great spot if you want to hike westwards. The onsens were good, from what I heard. Sadly, the hotel still enforce the "no tattoos"-rule.
