The fabled valley of Þórsmörk is truly out of this world. It's full of big mountains, glaciers with volcanoes underneath, huge river valleys and gorges. I'd definitely recommend to stay in Þórsmörk for a couple of nights. There are several walking tracks going off in all directions from the Básar hut. Including the famous Fimmvörðuháls track across Eyjafjallajökull, where you can see the giant lava flows and new craters from the 2010 eruption. It takes about 8 to 10 hours to either walk up & back down to Þórsmörk, or continue down to Skógar on the other side. It's 25 kilometres from Þórsmörk to Skógar, but you can also stay overnight at the Fimmvörðuháls hut between mid-June and the end of August. Going up from the Þórsmörk side is a bit more challenging than from Skógar. I've done this walk in both directions, and made a detailed description of the different options. Das Tal ist nur mit 4x4 Fahrzeugen zu erreichen. Einige Furten müssen durchquert werden. Wir waren mit einem Superjeep dort. Der Besuch lohnt auf alle Fälle.

This is an incredible wilderness park with lots of we'll marked trails for hikers of many different skill levels. I went there with my family and we had an amazing time hiking in the mountains, valleys and lava fields. Possible to see glaciers too. An incredible variety of terrains in a small area. Water in the streams is so pure you can just drink it.
