Really cool stop to check out while on the ring road.

BUT it is a pretty big time eater. It is a long, windy, cold walk. Bring a wind breaker with a hood.

Be warned, if you plan on climbing on top there is not a ton of structural support and there are a number of spots where the roof is torn open.

It's a long walk to get there. If there's wind..even longer. It looks like you are in a different planet. It's vast and beautiful. Don't just stop to take the stupid picture everyone takes on the plane. It's been done. Better. Before you. Go to the beach! It's a short walk from there and it's gorgeous.

This was a really unique place. The hike is 3.5 km (at least 45 mins to an hour each direction) when we arrived there were so many people it was impossible to get a decent picture. But very cool none the less. I would suggest you go here very early to avoid the crowds.

Fairly disappointing place to visit considering it is around 4km away from parking spot (takes around 40min with a brisk pace)! And it is only 1 way. Even the walk itself ain't that great as all you see is plains around you with the mountain range in the distance. You might get similar effects from parking lot. If you go with people who are not used to walking for extended periods of time I can tell you from my personal experience that they will definitely gonna get annoyed quite soon.

But if you want to visit this place anyway - don't follow Google maps entirely as it does not lead you to parking. When you start getting close enough simply look for big parking lot. There is only one of them in that area so itis impossible to get it wrong.

I'm a huge aviation fan, so this was the perfect spot for me. I've been wanting to come for years. The 45 walk to the plane is fine in decent weather, but I would not recommend it at all if the weather was remotely bad. There's nowhere to hide if there's a freak snowstorm.

I thought the plane was awesome, but I'm not sure non-aviation fans would feel the same. My travel buddy was only mildly interested.

I couldn't give five stars because the plane was just overwhelmed with tourists. Some sort of organization or tourist control would be nice.

Read somewhere that the 4km walk was questionably worth it. I would disagree. I enjoyed it very much. However I would suggest trying to get there before the big crowds.
We arrived at the parking about 30 minutes before sunrise. This ment that we were the first there, that the walk there was way different than the walk back (sunrise during our walk and dusk vs morning light)
So our walk wasn't boring as some people describe it.

When we got back to our car we passed a lot of people including a bus. I can imagine it not being fun if there are 50 people crawling around the plane.

The walk was 45min one way. You might think that you are almost there when you start seeing the ocean but don't be fooled.
You also only see the plane ate the very end of the walk.

Stayed at a guesthouse a couple of miles away. Arrived around 9 and were the second people there. The plane is surreal against the stark white landscape. Easy to find (parking right on rt 1, don't believe the tour guides who say it's hard) but it is a bit of a hike from the road. Wear gloves if going in winter!

Not to be missed! A must-see for Iceland! You can feel the history at this site. Can not recommend enough that you get here early (we visited just before dawn) and catch the sunrise coming up over the plane! You will never forget that experience! This country never ceases to amaze me!

Was a decent walk about 3k each way. However was a good sight and if you travel further down there is the coast line with is also a great. Beware of footing as there is ice patches during winter

Got here in the early morning in December. Prepare for a walk of around 40 minutes in one direction and while storm also have something with you to protect your eyes. Because the spot became so famous it will be crowded around an hour after sunrise so be the first to enjoy it all by yourself!

Absolutely amazing! It's about a 45 minute walk from the car park. We did it in 5 inches of snow with a 1 year old on my back! once we got there it looked magical. If you don't mind walking just over a 3 mile round trip it's definitely worth coming to see if you're in Iceland. Such a shame people are taking bits of it. When I was there they were like vultures. Great if you like a good long walk. My partner struggled. Works out at between 6km and 7km. A lot of people. So impractical to get a photo without others in it. All the less - I really enjoyed it.

I'm so glad that Iceland decided to keep this interesting site for the public. It's such a strange yet cool structure to see laying in the snow in the winter. The 4km walk one way to the site is long. It takes about 45 mins in the snow. I would suggest going before the sun comes up so that you can get there and see the sun rise behind it. It gets crowded very quickly so it will be hard to take pics without a stranger in them if you go during the day. Be prepared to walk 4km back too.

This place is really special. There is something about it that makes it very magical. The black sand, the ghostly remains of the legendary DC3, the howling wind and raging sea and the white peaks of the Eyafjallajökull in the background make it just a perfect place. Must visit when doing the ring road. Be prepared to walk as the wreck is 40 minutes away from the road. We visited on an October morning when it was not that busy. Max 8 people. However it can be very busy so take a look at the visitor expectations in Google maps.

The walk is totally not worth it. I walk every day in NYC, and it’s amazing, but here there’s not much to see, and it takes almost two hours of the precious daylight. The plane itself is all right, and if you could drive there, it’d be totally cool, but since you can’t drive out there, it brings down the experience a lot.

Interesting and nice spot to take some photos. Definitely awesome if you go to take pictures during the night with the northern lights. It's about 45 minutes/one hour walking, if you like photography is worthed.

Be aware that this requires a LOT of walking- and is a terrible idea to do on a day where the weather is not cooperative.
After about 40 minutes of walking one way, you arrive at the black sand beach where the plane is located. It is really neat to see the innards of the plane, and the location makes for great photos.
Also be aware that many people here are not so courteous. I wish there were rules that others were not allowed inside the plane, on top of the plane, etc. They ruined lots of people’s photos.
Overall, I’d recommend if you don’t mind walking, have a nice weather day, and I’d particularly recommend first thing in the morning while not so busy.

1:20 of walking (round trip) if you walk fast, easily longer. Wouldn't be bad if it was an interesting walk, but it is super flat and not much to see. Then you get there and it is a small wrecked plane, 10 min of pictures and then long walk back. Would be 3 stars of you could drive out there, but 1 star as it is now.

It's a plane fuselage. It has a road but for some unknown reason you can't drive down it. It's a good 40 min walk one way. Oh and you can see the sea. Worked up and appetite doing the walk though so that's a bonus. Wouldn't bother. Two stars for th exercise.

Utter waste of time. There's a reason why nearly everyone walking back from the site has their heads down, not talking to each other or anyone else: they're pissed they were convinced this stupid site was worth their time.

If you want to spend 1.5 hours of your life on the most boring, flat, completely un-scenic walk of your life followed by the frustration of arriving at a lame "destination" with your fellow man climbing all over it, thereby making it impossible for anyone to do the one thing you *could* do in such a place - take a picture - then you have far more time on your hands than most anyone else. Have at it.

But if you enjoy scenic hikes I nature with rewarding views and perhaps some unsullied photo ops, save this time and go anywhere else. You'll be glad you skipped it. With so much to see in Iceland, this has to be the greatest waste of many a traveler's time.

If you decide to visit at night, make sure you retract your steps carefully. Or better yet bring a compass and a lamp. You should be heading back north. We almost got lost because gps in your cellphone can sometimes malfunction.

If aurora activity is strong. The 8km roundtrip power walk will definitely be worth it! (That is if you are into photography). Nevertheless its pitch black here, so it will be still a feast in the eyes to see all the stars!

A lot of people are moaning about the walk to the site. Just under 4 kilometers each way. But the walk is flat, easy going and very surreal. I wish people would stop jumping all over the plane. But it has lasted this long so should be around for a few more years.

To be totally honest, for me it was not worth 1h30 of my precious time in Iceland. It would be much better to experience another wonderful walk with ending in warm river or near a waterfall. Plane wrack is really nothing special. I believe that for stroll lovers it could be interesting experience. From hwy 1 it looked like a 5 min walk to the coastline, however you need to prepare for a long walk (45 min one way).
It is as well a great place for photo shoot or movies. :)

An absolute MUST DO! There is a well marked parking lot that holds roughly 100 cars on the side of Highway 1. The hike is 45 minute to an hour across a gravel plain. the path is clearly marked. Be warned you won't be able to see the plane until you are very close because there is a slight hill. I was here in late January for sunrise (10am) and there were about 20 people taking pictures. It's a lot closer to the ocean than you would expect and I highly recommend walking to the water. The sands are black and it is very quiet unlike the very popular Black Sand Beach.

It's about an hour walk from the parking area to the plane wreck. It was well worth the trip. The path was very rocky though so you'll need to watch where you're stepping.

The plane wreck itself is neat, but it is a long, bumpy bike ride (or a longer walk) to get out there. Plus, you're pretty much guaranteed to find the plane (literally) crawling with tourists who want their photo on top of it. If you're really into this sort of thing, you won't necessarily be disappointed, but if your time is of the essence and/or it's a windy/cold/otherwise-poor-day-for-a-walk, you may want to skip it.

Beautiful place! Plan your time accordingly, the total hike took about 2.5 to 3 hours. It's a easy hike across flat ground as long as the weather is not too terrible. You can climb inside the plane once you arrive and get awesome photos

Awesome sight. And you can get some great photos if there's aren't too many tourists and the weather is cooperative. Those should be mutually exclusive, but even when we were there, there were many people coming to and fro in the driving rain - seriously 30mph winds with driving horizontal rain. That walk back was the most miserable experience. But I nice weather I imagine it's way better. Still I'm sure more people would've come if the weather was better.

It's a unique site for sure. There is no signage, so just be aware that you will hike 5 miles round trip. Wear appropriate shoes and bring water and snacks even if you don't think you will need them. Also, it is usually crowded so don't be surprised if you can't get a photo without a bunch a strangers in it.
