Dettifoss was amazing-- ferocious chaotic power. Wear water proof clothing because very cold and wet from mist and frequent rains.
From ring road, you can come from the east via 864 or the west via 862. I've heard 864 is unpaved plus inconvenient direction. 862 was newly paved and very convenient because we were returning to ring road afterwards. 862 seemed to be closed north of Detifoss.
Seems like view of Selfoss (the smaller falls) is better on east side though. Couldn't get very close on west side, but saw people walking close on east.
Worth the quick walk from the East side parking, I did see some people walk along the edge from the West side, but I don't know if there really is a trail for them. Plus they have a bad shot at what Selfoss really looks like from their angle. So I would say park at the East side.
Pretty awesome, 2 water falls in the area both amazing.
An underrated but one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland. This massive waterfall has tremendous power you can see from a distance, feel from the ground shaking and hear from a natural whistle it's produces if the wind is just right.
This is a less busy place being so far in the north of the island and away from anything else. It is a fun stop because just a short hike in the opposite direction on the trail to Selfoss is another beautiful horseshoe waterfall that is one of my all time favorites you can nearly walk on top of.
Visited here in the bleak winter of Jan 17 and it was 120% worth the frigid hike in the deep snow. Selfoss, in my opinion, was better the Dettifoss since you get, literally, to walk right up to it, at your comfort. This little gem deserves much more attention than it gets. I can only imagine what it's like to visit in the warmer months!
One your way to the the South Coast of Iceland go to stop at one shops the like Kronar or Bonus to buy so food to have with you. You have also Bobby Fisher center in Selfoss.
Very beautiful if you're willing to put in the leg work and take the beaten pothole-filled 30km road. Also, if you don't know about it you might miss the smaller, but more fantastic-looking set of waterfalls by following the markers across what's essentially a 2km rock garden. There's an easier road but the view is significantly worse. We saw a ton of waterfalls in Iceland and I would say if you just had to see one (set) of them it should be at Selfoss. Warning: only amenity is a dirty outhouse with little water.
Very nice place with amazing view. Good to be here
Dettifoss is the main attraction, but Selfoss is worth the short walk!
Awesome waterfall. Easy hike to get there.
Selfoss (combined with Dettifoss) are perhaps my favorite waterfalls in Iceland, not for their size but for their power. The journeys to get there (by the unpaved roads as well as the hikes along the rocks) make the sights all the more worth it, feeling earned rather than merely visited.
The area around the waterfall invites for a walk between the rocks in the water. Just be careful not to slip and fall. If you make it all the way to the edge of the waterfall you are rewarded with a stunning view down the stream that includes both Selfoss waterfall and the much bigger Dettifoss waterfall.
Impressive waterfall, just around the corner from dettifoss.
Probably one of my favorite waterfalls in Iceland. I actually preferred this falls to nearby Detifoss. Make sure to see both!
Simply breadthtaking, you will need to hike 30 min from the parling thru mud and ice but totally worth it.. very powerful scenary
Breathtaking and worth the journey
Beautiful place as most of the Iceland
