The lobby is lovelyand deceiving. The rest of the place is grungy. This is the most rugged hostel I've ever stayed at. The buildings are old and worn down. There are several rooms on each floor, with several bunks in each room. But there is only one toilet/shower (as in it's a single toilet and shower stall in the same room) per floor and the one on my floor was closed for renovations, so it was even more difficult to get a turn to use the toilet or shower.
The room doors are rather difficult to unlock and very loud and heavy, so it's horrible trying to sleep with people coming and going.
There is an old mini fridge and sink in the room and only one small window, so you almost feel like you're in a jail cell.
The breakfast ($15) is in one of several buildings.
The lobby is only staffed until 4 pm and a code is provided for entering the building.
They say parking is free, but that's simply because there is street parking available most of the time. There is no lot.
There is no decor and no amenities. It's very prison-like, so you don't get the community-vibe or social aspect that many hostels have.
You need to request a separate key to the "kitchen", which is in a certain building, meaning you likely have to walk a block or so outside in the usually awful weather.
The only good thing about this place is that it is not too far from the downtown strip. A 5-min walk to get to the main downtown street, and that street is about half an hour of strolling in length I you go to the end.
Unfortunately, I had a couple of quiet roommates and one that coughed every five seconds continually the whole time.response / report this review -

THEY SAVED MY VACATION: I'm a backpack traveler who wanted a cheap place to stay. This place is great, I stayed in the other building which is a block or so away. There was one key for my room and one key for the other building which made it feel a lot like I lived there. The front desk gave me a map that showed the main building, my building, and were to find the bus terminal for all of the out of city tours. The cleanliness of the hostel is just fine, there is sometimes dirt on the floors or in the bathroom but in January with the slush outside it's impossible to avoid. I received four meal tickets for my five day stay in my single room, which was just fine since I'd missed breakfast the first day anyways. The food was good and there was a selection of bread products, muesli, fruit, and beverages like milk juices and coffee. The first day I walked the city and this hostel was a great place to start at since it was close to the public pool (A staple to Icelandic life) and the church Hallgrímskirkja. However, The greatest part of my stay was the front desk receptionist, Thomas I believe, who saved my vacation. After I found out there had been a cancellation from troll on my south shore and glacier hike I went back to the hostel desperate for any other tour group that was going to the same location. He searched up everything and found that while all of the south shore groups had already taken off by the time I realized there had been a cancellation that he could book me for another tour if I wanted. Just from us talking through my other options he realized that my other tours were also from the same group. Long story short he said that I could move one tour, cancel another, and take a different tour today and still end up doing the three tours I wanted-Just in a different order. This was an extraordinarily complex situation which he went through step-by-step with me, even offering me a phone so I could call the company to get everything arranged and helped me get a full refund despite company policy. On top of that after I'd paid for the new tour and gotten the refund on the other I forgot my ID at the desk so he ran it to me while I was walking back to my room. I was a solo traveler so I'm sure you can imagine just how grateful I was to have stayed at a place that was cheap and treated their guests so well!

Really comfortable and warm. Staff were great. We had a private which was small but enough room for two and our bags. Showers are clean, warm and have great water pressure.
It's right near the centre with free parking all around.

Location is 10 min walk from main Street which isn't too bad. Was nice and clean and tidy and very helpful receptionist. However it does not have a communal kitchen, it only has a mini fridge and kettle in the room - so you can't make any food. Overall stay was good for one night if any longer I would have gone to a different hostel with a kitchen.

I booked a double private room on Booking. com and got a deal, so the price was amazing compared to other places. I liked that the hostel was very organized, that they sent me all the info by e-mail prior to my arrival. My room was very comfy, good mattress, clean. Fridge in the room and wash basin were quite handy and well thought out so that you don't have to use the bathroom if occupied by another guest. The bathroom was also very clean and properly maintained. What I appreciated the most was the hospitality of the staff and their eagerness to go beyond the usual politeness. The French receptionist (based on his accent) helped us immensely with all the valuable information and tips on when and how to travel during the harsh winter. We changed the plans according to his recommendations and were glad we listened to him. In conclusion, this place is a real find if you come across a good price! Also, I should not forget to mention the location just a few minutes from the city center. Highly recommended.

Clean, good shower and bathroom, convienent location 20 mins walk to both city centre and in the other direction to shopping mall. Be careful when getting private room as they charge per person rather than per bed. Free parking on roads all around. Reception closes at for but can organise through email for key collection.

We had a sink and mini fridge in our room, and the room itself was decent. But anytime anyone in the building talked or opened/shut a door, you could hear and feel it

This is nice hostel. I have stayed in a room with a shared bathroom. You have shared kitchen with all cooking facilities. The place isn't new, but for me it was fine.

For the price, this hostel offers good value. Good location - within walking distance from the BSI bus terminal and most places in central Reykjavik. It was also in a quieter location while not being too far from the action.
I stayed in a private, single room that was okay - it offered what I needed and that was just a place to sleep for 1 night. My room was in a second building, just around the corner from the main building.
The room was basic and and looked a bit "tired" - although it was cleaned very well, it didn't feel that clean. The bed linens could use replacing as the pillowcase was quite worn - small holes in several places.
I can't speak for the common areas, as I only came back to the hotel to sleep. In my building, there was a shared bathroom (was very clean while I was there) and a shared kitchen on every level. These were shared by the 3 or 4 rooms on the floor. Breakfast is also offered (for a price) in a dining room in the main building.
Overall, my stay here was not bad but not great either. If you want a cheap place to sleep for a night or two, then look no further. If you want a place where you can relax a bit in your room, then I would recommend you keep looking.response / report this review -

The room is ok, location is perfect, close to the bus station however they put us in a third floor with a tiny stairs I saw how they changed the room number when we were at the desk Very uncomfortable stairs for just staying one night very ugly gesture from the staff Nevertheless, the worst thing was the shower, needs deep clean

If you are alone on a layover, simply need a bed for the night and want to save some money, this place is fine. Just be ready to sleep in a small room with random people in bunk beds for about $30 US dollars per night. It served its purpose for me quite efficiently. Also the late night check-in was quite simple.

Comfortable and quiet. Rooms are clean and simple. It's quite expensive for what you get, but it was worth the good nights sleep after a long day of travelling.

Rooms are clean but not a spectacular view, just a backyard garden for us in building 5. Great location for walking to and around the city. Lounge is small, not very inviting. If you are looking to meet people, I would recommend the Bus Hostel. But if you just need a cozy place to stay, Hostel Village is wonderful

I had a really bad time here, not sure what are all this good reviews.
Let's first start saying that the linen of the bed were dirty (check attached image). That was something really disgusting to be received in.
Mattress is really uncomfortable and cheap. I was expecting way more for such an expensive place.
There is no sound proof at all, the doors are really narrow and the walls as well. You can hear every move in the hotel.
The place is really expensive, I paid $75 USD for a tiny room with a shared bathroom.
Internet speed is really poor.
The bathroom was dirty and didn't smell nice. The water is smelly and they don't have water filters as other hotels in Iceland do have.
Reception is only open during business hours.
PS: If you are still considering to stay here, bare in mind that it's a walk up guest house, and it has a second house 50 meters away.response / report this review -

Affordable but a bit run down. The plug socket for example disappeared into the wall when I plugged something in. However the shared bathroom was well kept, it's just a shame that it was shared6

I can confidently say that this is the worst Hotel/Hostel I have ever stayed at. This was my first time in Europe and specifically Iceland. I stayed here on a school trip and it couldn't have been worse. First of all I was provided with one towel for an entire week of staying there, to be used as a hand and shower towel. After one day of staying here my body wash was thrown out after I left it on a ledge inside the shower which was shared with two other rooms, still leaving plenty of space for other guests to put any of their showering items needed. I confronted the front desk to ask what had happened to my body wash soap and the answer I received was that it was thrown out and I should not have left it there. Containing my anger that my property was just thrown out while staying at their hostel, I ask the man if they had any soap I could use which I believe is a fair request after my entirely full travel size soap was thrown out and all I heard was, "No." Then he proceeded to tell me once again that I should not have left it there, acting like that was such an obvious concept that I completely overlooked. Moving onto the beds, with only one extremely small pillow provided per bed (four to one room) and the sheets being cleaned two times out of the five days I stayed there, it was an extremely uncomfortable situation to sleep in every night. Also don't bother trying to ask an employee a question because they are all gone after 4:00pm (16:00) the exact time that most people would be returning to their rooms before dinner and then again after dinner to go to bed. Finally I am not sure if this is the case anywhere else but my expierence in Reykjavik was that any European worker that was not Icelandic would automatically have this disgust in their tone when talking to you as an American, thus not having to do anything with you when you are simply looking for help or the answer to a question. I am not usually this harsh when reviewing restaurants or hotels, but I truly felt this was necessary to let others know considering the Reykjavik Hostel Village as a place to stay while they enjoy the beautiful country that is Iceland.

The staff was really unfriendly to me at check-in and the place was really dirty. Luckily I met some nice people, other than that it was not good at all. Do note that you will probably be sent to another location than the main building, probably a bit further away from the city (they wouldn't tell me where before I arrived).

there are many good hostel apart from this, staff is good, hostel is pretty small, if you looking to meet new people then you can try some different hostels, nearby to city centre
