Great soups. Good coffee. One of my party appreciated the decaf "tea". The service was friendly. The cakes looked tasty, but we didn't have any. If you need a beer, a shot of Irish or aquavit, they've got you covered. They do ask for a donation to use the wc.

I wouldn't really recommend getting the fish soup or lamb soup in the place of mushroom soup. I don't mind paying for food but when the portions aren't so generous, one needs to seek out the best deals. There were a few pieces of fish in the bowl. Disgraceful really. My buddy got the mushroom soup for a far better deal. There's a nice view from the restaurant at least.

Great lunch options. Clean bathrooms. Beautiful view. The only reason I didn't rate this location a 5 is due to high cost. Many of the soups were more than $20 USD.

Super friendly staff. Accommodate food requests if possible. Great views. Good was very good and fresh. Nice casual atmosphere to relax after hiking around the area. Warm soup is always good on a cold day.

Eating here helped me understand more about the real nature of Iceland, a century ago and today. This is where finally I tried my traditional lamb stew that I've been hearing about. I also tried meatballs, I was hungry. Both were tasty, everything was delicious actually. I thought both were very authentic because they strongly reminded me of other meals I can remember eating at the homes of Scandinavian friends. It's a modern restaurant with a historical grounding: I appreciated the enlarged photos on the walls from the town's history, and the view of the bay was beautiful on a sunny day from their large windows.

Everything was very clean and fresh, and I can confirm that the staff were very friendly (and very genuine, down to earth people). True that the menu is not large, but better to do a few things well than a lot of things not so well.

The front door that opens is all the way to the right on the side facing the street; go on in, the small number of staff might be in the back working, but there is a bell. They will be happy to see you, and will treat you very pleasantly.

The choice is quite limited which is why it's 4 & not 5 stars. They have about 5 sandwiches, and 3 mains and 3soups. I had the meatballs main and it was very good. Decent portion size too and yes, for what it was, expensive, but this is true about all food in Iceland. Once you get over that you can enjoy it. It had some lovely upstairs seating with a lovely view.

We went here after a rainy hike from Arnarstapi. We were cold and wet and greeted with the friendliest of service. When the server found out I was gluten free she gave me her dessert free of charge because it was also gluten free and she'd "really enough dessert for the day". The coffee was good but the service was the best!

If Iceland had one of the Middle Ages gateways to hell, this restaurant in Hellnar must be Hell’s Kitchen. As in Dante’s Inferno the punishment fits the sin.
For my pride I was punished by rude and indifferent service.
For my wrath I was made to wait in a long queue.
For my greed I was punished with high prices.
For my gluttony I was punished with bread and a weak broth called meat soup.
I left still hungry but like a happy soul escaping damnation.

Good service, friendly staff, you can tell they take pride in their cafe and their town. They are very helpful and knowledgeable, and a great local resource for learning about the area. BTW, anyone who doesn't like their food, service, prices, or payment options, just doesn't know anything about Iceland, Icelanders, or Icelandic cuisine. And Amex is only accepted in America, people:)

This place is remarkable.When we drove past, it looked closed but we decided to try the door anyway. We are glad we did. The staff was amazing. Super kind and helpful. Grab a coffee and beer and sit overlooking the cliffs at hellnar. You won't regret it!

Narrow selection of food, expensive, and unfriendly staff. That said, it does have the credit of being a decent enough restaurant in the middle of essentially nowhere.
