They tried to scam us as we were leaving. The tank was 5% from full, and he wanted to charge us 3,000 ISK. We decided to fill it ourselvea, which costed less than 1,000 ISK. Very bad experience.

We rented a camper van in November 2017. Just a small camper car for 2 as you can see on the pictures. Experience with Go Iceland / Rent.is was only good. Everything went really smooth in their office. We had only one small problem, with card terminal, but it was solved in couple of minutes. They even gave us ride from and to airport, as their new office is not directly on the airport. Really great services. So in one world, it was just a great! We really enjoy amazing Iceland with Rent.is / Go Iceland!

Where to start The navigation died 20 min in and there was no charger, they gave us cooking propane bottles that didn't work with our stove (and we couldn't find the right ones our entire trip) which added a huge expense to our trip. The van started running funny so we went back to Reykjavik early to have it looked at their shop and they didn't show up for HOURS. Then they proceeded to tell us its "all your fault" the car wasn't running right because we put the wrong gas in it. Luckily we had ALL of our gas receipts saying that was not the case and all they said was "well we can't be sure" . We returned the van early just to be done with them. Literally the worst customer service I have ever had!

Awful service. We had the car for 5 days. The heating system was uneven, many things broken and the sheets reeked like rotten eggs. Then when we left thw car they tried to trick us on deposition by claiming the window had cracks? Which were there before us. So we asked to see cdocumentation from previous renter, then they got quiet and scared and said nothing more. SO BAD to try to trick us on money just because we were 2 young girls, but as fast as we argued back they got scared.

These guys are scammers. At first place they seem to be kind, when they give you more expensive car than you've paid for, but with this kindness comes great responsibility. More expensive car = more expensive damage costs and trust me, they charge a lot! For a scratch, which can be easily polished within an hour, they've charged us 1000 euros. It seems like their business model, so please be kind to your wallet and avoid them.

We rented a camper van from June 13th to June 20th, 2017. What a great experience! We drove most of the entire perimeter of the country. We found great places to park our van and sleep. The country is very clean and natural. Please be respectful and do not leave tissues where you camp. If you have to poop pack your wipes and throw them in the next trash can you pass!! We had all the necessary equipment provided with the rental. We immediately stopped at the grocery store and loaded up on all of the essentials. Rest stops have clean and fresh water so just grab a few bottles that you can refill. We did drive on some gravel roads so we got the insurance for that. Overall, the van performed great for us. We had such a special and intimate adventure! We love Iceland completely !!!

Do NOT rent from Go Iceland. We got a Suzuki Jimmy from them. First off, I arranged for it to be delivered to the hotel we were staying at (they offer this as a free service), but then the day before, they email me and tell me that they can't do that and I have to pick it up from their other office. This cost me $$ in travel expenses to get there. Our car was old, which is fine if it runs well, but less than an hour after we picked it up and were headed to the West Fjords, it proceeded to GO UP IN FLAMES in a tunnel outside of Reykjavik. Pieces of metal fell from the undercarriage, and smoke billowed from the hood. We had to scramble out of the car in busy traffic, to grab a fire extinguisher from the tunnel service boxes.The car had 240k + miles on it, and when given to us, had a check-engine light on that they told us to "ignore". We then had to use the 112 emergency number to get us towed from the tunnel and then wait for 2+ hours for the company to assist us. Their 24- hour maintenance line? No one answered. Nothing is worse than starting your trip with flames coming up from the hood in a foreign country, under ground. After 2 hours, a new car was dropped off to us (a much better car), but we were still worried that the company will recklessly charge us for the damage which we did not cause, even though we bought the expensive add on insurance. Driving a car for 45 minutes on flat, paved roads, can in no conceivable way cause such damage. The guy that came to swap out our vehicle told us that the car was "simply old", and we believe they were purposefully giving us an unsafe vehicle in order to get one more trip out of it. Go visit Iceland, be safe, and don't use this car company.

I rented the 4WD VW California camper van from GO Iceland for a five day drive around the island. I, too, was a bit nervous dealing with this company, based on all the negative reviews. Wasn't I pleasantly surprised! The staff were friendly, very meticulous in orienting me to the many features of the camper van--which far exceeded my expectations--and insisted that all was ready before departure (including extra canisters of stove fuel, 4 sleeping bags, a 5G portable Wi Fi hotspot!, a portable refrigerator, and proper linen). The VW has a diesel heater that can run all night. This is a very nice feature. I have been a VW camper van guy since the 1970s---VW keeps getting better and better. FYI, it gets about 40 mpg (diesel). All said, it was a perfect five day vacation in Iceland: Rightful thanks to GO Iceland for providing and provisioning an excellent van. They rent camper that stands out . Among the welter of vans populating the campgrounds on Iceland, it was the best; more than once we were approached by people asking about the VW-- some even concluding they wished they had rented one themselves. I would give GO Iceland a chance, despite their poor reviews, but only if you are so lucky to get one of their VW California campers. I cannot vouch for anything else.

We rented the All Wheel Drive 2.0L TDI VW California Beach Van and it was an absolute blast to drive. I put over 3500Km on it driving around the ring road and it handled both the paved roads and gravel roads beautifully. The stereo connected easily to our phones via bluetooth. Make sure you have some music on your phone because its very difficult to find good music on the local radio stations. The pop top was super easy to use but I would highly recommend bringing earplugs and a sleep visor because the wind doesn't stop and the sun doesn't go down. At least not this time of year. I was lucky to have brought both. The van has a table that pops out of the sliding door and can be used with 4 legs outside or with 2 legs fastened to the wall inside the van. The front seats swivel around to face the back which creates a very comfortable living quarters and there are 2 camping chairs in a pouch connected to the back door. All the windows have built in sliding shades and in one of the drawers under the bench seat you will find a shade for the front door windows and windshield. We were well supplied with a little gas camp stove, a jug of water and all the sleeping bags and pillows you need.
I live in Canada. I don't think these types of vans are available here or I'd consider purchasing one. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
One more thing; I recommend paying for the extra insurance coverage if you plan on driving all the way around Iceland. We ran into one road closure where a car full of tourists had driven into a wind/sand storm and it blew out all of their windows. Also, whenever you open your doors always try to have two hands on the handle. You can't see how windy it is because there are no trees and it can easily catch you off guard and bend your doors forward. When we were returning our van, thankfully in mint condition, a girl was holding her face as the rental inspector was looking at a very obviously bent door and fender due to the wind bending it forward. Another tip, the gas pumps would not take our Canadian Visa's but most would take our debit cards. At some pumps we had to buy gas cards from inside at the till to use outside at the pumps. Make sure you buy a couple of extra gas cards because not all gas pumps have attendants. The hours in Iceland are not like the city. Don't expect anything to be open late or early in the morning. You can however, expect to see some of the most beautiful mountains, volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, geisers, farms, churches, reindeer, arctic fox's, puffins, cliffs and ocean views that you'll ever see.
We dealt with a great guy named Steinns at the Keflavik Airport branch of Go Iceland. He was extremely polite and helpful and did his best to get us going in an efficient manner.

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY .
You will not get the car you reserved, the GPS you rent is garbage (we had to try 3 different units), and the car they give you won't be clean (interior & exterior) and the car will be a very old beat up version of something "similar" to what you reserved.
Stick with Major companies, read the reviews. It's not worth saving money to deal with poor product and service.response / report this review -

I saw the previous reviews the day before I picked up my car from this company and they made me very nervous. However, I had a good experience with this company so I wanted to make sure to add mine to the mix. I picked up my brand new car at their Reykjavic office and had no problems with it on my 7 day drive around the ring road. When I returned it at the airport, the agent did a thorough inspection but did not find or fabricate any damage. I had only the standard CDM policy. All around a positive experience. I would advise other people who are planning to drive the ring road to go ahead and spring for the gravel damage addition to the insurance. About half the roads I went on were unpaved and though I managed not to acquire any gravel damage, I was stressed about it the whole time. Even highway 1 has portions that are gravel.

Worst hire company you'll find in Europe, UK, or USA. Unfortunately we missed the many reviews of how poor they were and found out the hard way. Returning a clapped out camper van that barely made it round our 4 dat trip.
Warned at the start about how driving in Iceland is an experience that warrants maximum insurance cover. Can't say they were wrong as most roads are gravel tracks at best and mimor damage is inevitable from the moment you leave the airport.
Took the premium insurance to return the van and discover a minor scratch on the under side of the bumper. 30 minutes later running late for the flight. 50 000 ick down for the insurance premium cover. About £385!! So you basically pay for extra cover about £120 which reduces the mandatory excess to £382. I'm almost positive they won't replace the bumper because the damage was so minor.
Still weren't happy with that and wanted another 47000 ick for supposed damage underneath the vehicle because of course premium insurance doesn't even cover that. Had to leave with them almost chasing us into the airport because we refused to ripped off anymore and miss our flight.
If you were lucky the van itself was worth about £500.
Loads of other companies out there. This one should be avoided at all costs!response / report this review -

Best on foot than rent on Go Iceland.
We pick up the car at night and they said to us that we don't have to check the car for minor damages because we have the Premium Insurance. ( That in case of damage you only pay 350 euros as they told us ).
When we return the car they say that we were responsible of a small paint scratch ( it's 3milimeters long and they put as a medium damage ) on the rear door, and when they charge us instead of 350 Euros, they charge 390.response / report this review -

AVOID
Driving a motorhome is probably the nicest way to visit iceland on a family trip, but I do not recommand renting it with Go Iceland. « Campervan Iceland » was the website I dealed with and Go Iceland seems to be their motorhome provider, the one you deal with for real when you get there. Anyway, booking and communications with Campervan Iceland before we left were smooth and efficient. The trouble started when we got there – at Go Iceland’s office.
The Motorhome seemed very clean and OK at first seight, but it was in fact in bad condition as we progressively dicovered. For instance, when we took possession of it, one of the front beam didn’t work, so as a kitchen light. I told them. They changed the beam, gave à knock at the kitchen light to make it work ant they told us we could find a replace bulb anywere (DIY…). They didn’t seem to care or keep record of scratches and bumps on the camper, so we took photos of all wrong things we could find.
In the nex few days, we discoverd that many other things were also broken. Only one of the stove’s buner was working properly. The gray water thank valve was broken and couldn't hold the used water that went right on the ground when using the kitchen or the bathroom, wich we just didn't use to avoid poluting the soil, using instead the camping facilities for the whole trip. The taps of the kitchen sink and the bathroom were leaking at their bases and spilling water on the stove and counter, and ultimatly to the floor. So did the clear water thank on the kitchen floor while filing it up. Many screws of the windows inges and railings were striped or missing, so we couldn't opened them otherwie they would brake for good. The arms of both front seats were dismantled (the were in place but would fall as soon you touched it). Etc.
I called Go Iceland the second day to tell them about these problems, but I then realised I could waste our hollydays taking care of them, so I decided just not thinking about it. This strategie worked until the second day before we left the country : the check engine started to flash and the motor lost about 60% of its power. I drove the last 350 km at 60 km/h on flat road and at 10 km/h going uphill…
A funny one that could have been a raging story: at the very end of the trip I realised that there was no spare tire on board! Lucky we didn't have a flat in the middle of nowhere.
When we returned the motorhome, I told the guy all the things that were wrong. He politely listen to me but didn't take note of any on a sheet of paper. Hopefully for the following clients, he has a very good memory and will get them all fixed…
Also, when we took the motorhome, the guy at the counter made a big thing about the bumpers, saying if we had a accident and damaged it would cost me the whole caution (about 3500,00 $). Awared, I checked carefully the bumpers before we left and found out that the rear one was ligthly craked at the right corner, and I took a photo of it. But very soon, nex day in fact (we were at Snaefellness), that corner was almost cracking apart and I realised it has been poorly repeared with a bad glue that didin't hold to the pvc anynore. I fixed the bumper with tape, hoping it would hold until we return the motorhome. I had to change the tape a few times along the trip, but it did the job. When we got back at Keflavik, the guy tried to charge us for the damage at the bumper (that was the only trouble he seemed to notice and remember), and I had to argue and show my photos. At the end, he said we wouldn't be chardeg for it, but I left with the feeling – after the big fuss about the caution and the bumpers, the bad glue hiding the craks, the fact that when we rturned the motor home the only bug the guy seemed to want to notice was the bumper, etc – the feeling that they had planed to charged us the craked bumper from the very first day. I may be wrong, but the bad feeling was there.
I send a e-mail to Campervan Iceland telling them what we have been trough with their provider. I got no answer. ☹response / report this review -

Battered old red fun with more bumps than flat surfaces. Broke down, 4 hr wait with family. Unapologetic. Don;t take the risk. Worst rental experience ever.
