Fascinating and informative. See exactly what volcanic activity does with homes that have been preserved as they were after the eruption. Interactive displays and a self-paced audio tour bring the eruption on Heimay to life. Upstairs you learn about the newest volcanic island, and how life is colonizing it.

The closest you can get to understand how was Surtsey Island World Heritage site was created. Also the history of the volcanic eruptions in this part of Iceland, the explanations and artifacts showcased are well worth of a visit!

This is one of the must visit museum in Iceland, the museum tells the story of how the citizens of Heimaey batteled nature when the island was transform was transformed from a peaceful and quiet island to a active catastrophe scene when the volcano Eldfell became active.

The museum is very visual and gives you a good idea about the devastating consequences of the eruption and what forces the locals where fighting against, and the scares are still very visible in the city.

The café, located on the second floor servers what i would say is a standard café menu and the the coffee is very likely the best you can get on the whole island

$2300 Krona and well worth the visit. All about the eruption on the island and the museum was built around an excavated home buried during the eruption. They provide an audio set that guides you through the exhibits. Very interesting! And great espresso in the upstairs cafe!

Excellent museum. Very focused. Audioguide is well done. Has WiFi. About 10 walk uphill from ferry terminal. Only reason I downgraded the stars was that they really need more washrooms.

A very nice exhibit, you feel like you were almost there during the eruption. The excavated house demonstrates how devastating volcanoes can be.

Eldheimar museum in Vestmannaeyjar is a new highly interesting museum to commemorate the event in 1973 when eruption started at the edge of this town of 5.800 inhabitants. It is a unique event in history and probably on the planet as the rift opened practically in the small town located on a small island. The evacuation of the whole population was unprecedented as was the development of the eruption. Despite these devastating events people actually moved back to the island moths after the eruption ended. It is a wonderfully modern and digitally advanced museum totally worth visiting and spend an hour and a half.
