I'll admit I saw this place advertised on the welcome video Icelandair plays on the flight in. But was not disappointed. Far from being touristy it was small and quaint. If you're not going to be able to avoid spending $60 on dinner it might as well be the best dinner you can find. The Icelandic sampler plate set the right tone for the rest of our trip. We sought out foods we liked mashed fish on rye bread and smoked lamb and avoided fermented shark (though not nearly as bad as everyone claims, kind of like a really stinky blue cheese). Really glad we ate there, definitely the best meal we had.

Some real good Icelandic dishes! Price are competitive considering the location. I would highly recommand the Fish Stew which taste incredibly good. The service is fast even when the place is full. Would come back anytime for sure. Also, your are 1 minute walking from the principle church of the city.

Delicious breakfast and friendly staff. All the staff speak English very well and are more than willing to help you navigate the menu or the city. Reasonable prices for Reykjavik.

The best bread I have ever tasted! Very delicious Vegetarian plate and super nice staff. Was stuffed and satisfied at the end of the visit. Thank you! Will come back next time I'm in Reykjavik!

The restaurant has a nice and calm atmosphere with very friendly staff. I was looking to try more Icelandic beer and found that the cafe has its own beer brewed by a local brewery. I ordered what I think was the Icelandic plate three which included two small fish sandwiches and their rye bread ice cream. Both sandwiches were tasty, but the one with herring was particularly delicious. The homemade rye bread that the restaurant prides itself on is great about that's coming from someone who wouldn't topically go for rye given other choices.

The rye bread ice cream blew me away. It's a delicious cream flavor with small pieces of their rye bread mixed. The rye bread prices are soft from absorbing the cream. Amazing!

best rye bread ice cream! it was definately something i haven't tried before but it was worth it. we came here twice on our short trip. once for dessert/coffee. the second time we came back to try their lunch menu. had the lamb soup and the mashed fish, then the rye bread ice cream again. highly recommend this place!

It is located right in front of the church and the view is great when there's good sunshine. The food tastes great and the staff is very friendly with some great suggestions and ideas. There are a few freebies too - like postcards with pictures of the church and a flyer of the story of Loki. The restaurant upstairs has better ambiance.

Stopped in for a traditional Icelandic meal at one of Reykjavik's main squares. This place is recommended in the guide books and it is worth a stop. My wife and I shared the Icelandic Plate 1 which was a great sampling of traditional Icelandic food. The cost was about $25 USD which is about normal for Reykjavik.

Pro Tips: Sit upstairs for a great view.
This is one of the few establishments in Iceland which accepts American Express cards.

Amazing little place with delicious Icelandic food! My party of 3 from the U.S. ordered all different items and everything we had was delicious. Our waitress was amazing. I am super impressed!

Nice staff. I came around noon on a Saturday and it wasn't crowded. I sat on the second floor which has a nice view of the church. The Icelandic meat soup was very flavorful. The rye bread with butter is very moist and delicious!

Their Rye bread ice-cream with cream and caramelized rhubarb syrup was amazingly delicious! Their Icelandic platters were worth trying out if you wish to sample some Icelandic specialty such as mashed fish and smoked trout.

Service was quick and cafe attendants were friendly despite the busy crowd. This cafe is definitely worth visiting 👍🏻

Food is traditional Icelandic. We had the fish stew there, and it was ok, but not the best we had in Reykjavik. Beautiful location, delicious rye bread ice cream (sounds weird, but it works!). Definitely worth stopping in if you're in the area.

Great atmosphere, with lovely music playing. Very amicable staff.

The food, homemade Icelandic ware, is delicious and affordable compared to a large majority of places in Iceland.

I recommend trying the Rye Bread Ice-cream.

One of the best and most authentic meals of our trip! We got here 10 minutes before they opened and we're seated right away. We split one of the platters with a bit of everything. Weirdly delicious! Make sure you an adventurous eater tho!

Our first and last meals in Reykjavik were in Cafe Loki. Great casual atmosphere with traditional Icelandic foods served fresh. Prices were good for Iceland.

Cafe by day, dinner in evenings. Trad food at trad prices in a quaint cozy setting. Delicious sweetened rye bread is the specialty, including a rye bread 'ice cream,' which is more a mousse. Small quality selection of the alcohols. Great value in a great location near the big new church.

Best rye bread I have ever had - moist, almost like cake. Delicious menu full of options that allow you to taste some of Iceland's most unique foods. Highly recommend any one of the Icelandic plates!

Nice views, tasty local food options, very friendly and efficient staff. If you're visiting Iceland from the U.S., you've probably already heard that it's expensive - it is: a local pale ale here (which is good), runs about $11.20 for an 11.2oz bottle as of this posting. We tried the lamb pate and fish mash on locally made rye bread (both were really good and unique).

Great food. This is a place that the locals recommend as the best place to try Icelandic cuisine for good reason. The meat soup especially. Staff here were less helpful. You could see them standing and talking to each other, we waited for the bill at the table a while until we realized that they wanted us to pay at the counter.

Great place for traditional Icelandic dishes. Icelandic Meat Soup is delicious! We also had the Lamb pate which was very tasty. We heard that they also had a good brunch but didn't get to try it. Staff were friendly. Right beside the Hallgrímskirkja Church so can get busy. Would recommend to stop by for a taste!

It was great to try some authentic Icelandic food. It was just the perfect amount to try different flavors, especially enjoying the local fish and lamb influence in their dishes. I am happy we decided to stop by before we left Reykjavik. As an added bonus, it was cool how they integrated the Norse mythological figure of Loki in their theme.

Rye bread ice cream!!! They have dishes called Icelandic Platters which are good if you want to try different Icelandic/Scandinavian food. We had Icelandic Platter 3- Plokkfiskur(mashed fish), herring and egg, rye bread ice cream. Also had the Icelandic pancakes with cream and caramel syrup, as well as Skye cake.

Good location near the Hallgrimskja Church . Take a seat upstairs for better views!

This place has good food and is in a good location next to the cathedral with window seats upstairs looking out onto it. The service and decor lets it down. The service was very slow and had to get their attention to be served which is hard being sat in the corner and out of the way. The decor looks cheap and nasty with looking as though tourists have had a big impact on the look and feel of this place.

So the tourists have had their definite influence on this place, which is a shame. However, they serve lots of delicious traditional Icelandic food. But they seem to expect a tourist in the door rather than a local to a high degree. Come here to experience some of the local dishes, and don't miss it. But don't make this place your dinner, you wont be full when you leave. And to anyone wondering, the fermented shark is simply delicious and a must for anyone who enjoys strong liquorice! I enjoyed everything I was served. But you will be seated surrounded by people who can't stomach any of it. I was actually given a lot of food by the people who sat next to me. So come here at your own risk, and definitely don't come to Iceland without trying some of the old old school local specialities!
