Worth the hike in. 5km hike from gate. Afternoon winter sun in pictures. Next time will have to plan trip around lighting.

For me the most impressive waterfall in Iceland, just because of its sheer water power. The whole landscape looks like Mordor and the rock formations with its basalt columns is just unique! Since its a bit more remote than other waterfalls, its not too crowded even in summer. An absolute must for all travellers!

The Aldeyjarfoss waterfall is situated in the north of Iceland at the northern part of the Sprengisandur Highland Road which means it is to be found within the Highlands of Iceland.

One of the most interesting features of the waterfall is the contrast between the black basalt columns and the white waters of the fall. In this, it is similar to the much smaller Icelandic waterfall Svartifoss in Skaftafell.

The river Skjálfandafljót drops here from a height of 20 m. The basalt belongs to a lava field called Frambruni or Suðurárhraun, hraunbeing the Icelandic designation for lava.

It was nice. If the sky were blue, it would have been even awesome. A bit off the main road, but kinda worth it. The cliff wall has interesting pillar-like structure.

Amazing power! One of my favourite waterfalls in iceland. There is no direct path to this waterfall from the car park which makes it even more special and adventurous. We went during the night in summer. Take care on the uneven ground

Another gorgeous waterfall. Getting here is hard though, don't try it without a car that has good ground clearance. You will have to negotiate some fairly big rocks. There is a basic outhouse at the parking area. The trail is basically unmarked so don't come here if you get lost easily.

Very photogenic waterfall, the main attraction is its remoteness. You are not going to find tourist busses around here that stop in droves. Since it requires a little effort to drive here with a 4x4 you get to enjoy this piece of nature all alone. The basalt rocks and white color of the stream makes it unique. A must if you are in Iceland

IMHO, this is the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland for photographer. Getting there has its price. Driving over 36km of route 842 is not easy. In winter, it is icy. I opened the door and stepped out the car for a moment, and I was walking over ice. Hence, be prepare to drive 45-60 minutes instead of what the GPS will tell you. The F26 is close during winter. Think you can simply ignore the instruction and drive over - think carefully. Some of the snow is 1.5 feet thick - even a 4x4 may not get over. I end up hiking 4km over icy and snowy path. The path is not exactly marked, you have to find your way. Once you get there, you could be the only one or a few other die-hard photographer. I think a mid-day visit with some cloud is the best. I went there twice over two days. One day, it was too cloudy, and the other day, it was too sunny (no clouds).

Absolutely breathtaking! We have been travelling anti clockwise around Iceland and seeing all the major waterfalls, and they just keep getting bigger and bigger. But after stopping by Godafoss, we decided to continue on to see Aldeyjarfoss. As it was winter, the road was very icy and major sections later were in snow. There were inclines, declines and turns in these conditions so major caution and 4wd experience is required. But it was absolutely worth it.

If you want to see a powerful waterfall, this is one. The 20-meter high waterfall Aldeyjarfoss in the river Skjálfandafljót is a powerful stream of glacial water forcing its way from the Icelandic Highland between stunning basalt columns cliffs. Proximity to the waterfall is almost intimidating as its power, and the muddy color is somehow threatening.

Awesome waterfall. Beautiful, and very grandiose. You can walk down to the top of the falls, where you can have fun playing on the rocks just beside the raging river. Also like the fact this waterfall is off the beaten path a little, so generally a little less crowded than some of the other falls in Iceland. Beware, though - the road to get there is a little rough, so either have a 4x4, or take it slow if you're in a car.
