Never rent a car here!! I had booked a car for two days, got a VW Fox. Already upon car receipt I noted two damages that had not been documented in the papers. When returning the car the Avis people performed an extremely detailed check and finally found a small scratch at the underside of the front spoiler, at a position where under normal circumstances when getting the keys I had no chance to realize it without crawling around the car on my knees. I was charged EUR 160 for this damage which I was not responsible for. The Avis people didn't care about my reasoning, they even clearly and absolutely unashamedly stated that it makes no difference at all whether I had actually caused this damage or not. As it is not documented in the papers I would have to pay for it in any case. I tried to sort that out with Avis customer service (first German customer service, which was a complete disaster, then Croatian customer service). To make a long story short - they simply didn't care. They "have to follow their procedures", so I was told, and also it didn't play a role that I'm a regular Avis customer and could proof a high number of rental agreements from the recent years.
From Avis I would expect a professional behaviour, but Avis Dubrovnik is not better than any local low budget car rental company. To me this case shows evidence of systematic customer rip-off. I can only warn everybody of renting a car here!!!

We rented a car in Dubrovnik to be turned in at the Split Airport. The car was fine and the folks in Dubrovnik (Cilipi Airport) got us on the road quickly. There was an upcharge for the green card and insurance add-ons. We were told that if we used the insurance included with our credit card, they would place a hold on the card for 3,000 Euro + the car rental fee. If we purchased insurance through the rental car agency, they only held an additional 300 Euro for the deposit. The 3000 Euro figure seemed absurd, so we went with their insurance (around 30 Euro). The insurance was annoying, but what really soured me was the car drop off at the airport in Split. Avis has no outdoor kiosk and no designated parking area for their drop-offs. No Avis representative, no signs, nothing. After circling the airport in confusion, we were finally told to drive down a long, dusty side road near the airport and leave the car in any space we could find. That spot ended up being a small space between a dumpster and a thicket of thorny overgrowth near an abandoned greenhouse. From there, we trudged with our bags to get into the airport: hot, sweaty and really frustrated. Complete disorganized mess. The only rental car agency with a proper drop off area at the Split Airport is Sixt. I would recommend renting from them.

Rented a car here August 26th. Since we were renting the car in Dubrovnik and driving through the Bosnia border we were told we need a "Green Card" at the absolutely ridiculous price of around 90 Euros. I told the woman I did not want the "Green Card" but she refused to rent me the vehicle without one. I crossed through Bosnia twice during the trip and not once was I ever asked for this expensive "Green Card" Avis told me I needed. I later inquired with Enterprise just down the street which has no charge for the same "Green Card."

I luckily got the car I ordered but it was physically in terrible condition. It took almost 10 minutes going over it with the employee because he had to mark down all the damage to the car. The interior was filthy and definitely hadn't been detailed in some time. The seats were stained and the inside of the windshield was so dirty I had to pull over at one point and clean it.

This Avis location is an absolute embarrassment to the company I would recommend avoiding it at all costs.

I should have read these reviews before renting. This franchise is fraudulent! After dropping off my car we witnessed a couple being shaken down for damage underneath the bumper that was simply not there. The agent argued in a threatening manner and I felt for the poor couple as they were helpless. I checked my bill to see they added a 300 Kuna damage charge on top of the 365 Kuna rental cost. When I spoke with the agent on the phone, she told me it was for the mess left in the car. I cleaned every piece of trash, leaving only crumbs a 2 minute vacuum could have fixed. After asking more questions, including the woman's name, she hung up the phone on me. Awful treatment. I had only very positive experiences renting cars throughout Croatia and am shocked that my only negative experience was through Budget. Stay far away from these crooks.

Do not choose Avis! SCAM! Whatever you do, do not use this company.

This is actually a franchise and the company is named Best Car Doo. We were told we would not have to pay the border crossing but when we arrived in Dubrovnik we had to pay an extra 60 euros. This was only the start of our problems. When we dropped the car off at Split airport, everything was signed off as fine. Only to discover when we got home we had a £850 charge for damages (no accident had occurred whilst we had the car). When we queried this, it was damage to the underside of the vehicle!!! Of course it was.in a place no one can ever check beforehand. Luckily for us our bank reimbursed the charges and when we questioned the company they took no further action. Absolute scam do not use!!

Car was fine, treatment fair except their policies for travelling abroad: you have to pay an extra fee of 82 EUR, which they should mention during the booking.

I'm an Avis Preferred customer so was keen to use Avis to drive along the Croatian coast to Split. However as other reviewers have mentioned they charge a 50 Euro "green card" fee for driving through Bosnia & Herzegovina. This is not mentioned in the location specific terms and conditions on their website (It says details will be provided at the rental office) so I only confirmed this by ringing them. Completely unacceptable from Avis and makes me seriously consider switching permanently to using Sixt.

No doubt, the best rent-a-car service in Dubrovnik. I always rent from Avis, expecially when in Dubrovnik. Very professional personel, but friendly and helpful at the same time. My honest recommendation.

Don't rent from here. Returned the car and when he was checking for damage he starts feeling under the rear bumper, in a particular spot. I was charged for a small scratch under the bottom of the bumper. I couldn't see what he was trying to show me or feel anything neither could my spouse. I tried to argue but had a plane to catch and was making no progress with him. I'm convinced he hit something prior to renting it and knew there was a scratch under there somewhere even tho I sure couldn't find it. Charged me 100 euros for something that I'm convinced wasn't there. I returned the car in perfect condition. Even had extra fuel in the tank from what it had when I took it. Just rent from someone else, I feel scammed.

    These people are scammers.

Do not rent a car from Avis. You will get a massive bill that you damaged the car even though nothing is wrong. So pathetic!!!

I got a $2k bill for some phantom damages that were made up that were already there.
The Split airport location is even worse. Judging from these reviews. This place is just as bad.

    Buyer beware

The service here was so bad, so fraudulent, I feel compelled to warn others about it. At the beginning, when renting the car, something seemed amiss in the atmosphere , as the female assistant while serving us was also having a bad tempered argument with a male co-worker. And as others have noted, we were charged 50 Euros for a "green card" insurance document to pass through the border to Bosnia, of course with no mention that it should have only cost 15 Euros if purchased at the border. The car we rented had lots of obvious scrapes and scratches , and the majority of these were duly noted at the time of rental. The assistant occasionally passed her finger over some dirt or minor blemish and tut-tutted, without noting anything down. [Having rented cars in other countries where anything less than the size of penny was considered unimportant, we thought this was OK]. However, upon returning the car, the next assistance pointed out one very minor mark (

We had a car reserved and almost didn't show up because of the negative reviews here. While we were waiting people arrived and got into a shouting match over a minor mark on a already heavily damaged car. It was a highly unlikely that this mark was new and not created with the adjacent major damage.

Staff also tried to guilt us into additional fees for airport drop off, insurance, cross border, ferry, etc. each of which costs €30-50.

We asked at two other car rental agencies and both confirmed that all these charges were included with their rental. We ultimately decided that this place just not worth the hassle and left without finalising our booking.

There is an Enterprise car rental and a Discovery car rental within a five minute walk. Both appear more honest and we chose one of those options which has been seamless.

Never book with Avis Dubrovnik. We booked the car through another agency (CarDelMar - Check24) with the full insurance. They charged us again 175 Euros for the insurance. To pass the border they charged us 50 Euros extra. The car was crashed in many spots and not full tanked. When we arrived there to return the car, the windshield wipers were missing and although we had payed the full insurance they wanted us to pay 50 Euros because we didn't went to the police. But how could we if we hadn't noticed that? Worst experience ever renting a car. Very dishonest personnel.
