Amazing museum free. Lots of history, exhibits culture and artifacts. Took about 2 hours to go through. Definitely recommend a stop by. Leaned a lot and children enjoyed it.

Five-star, must-visit, Free! Museum everyone need to go there if he visit Hong Kong seriously!
This museum is very good, all exhibition are carefully crafted, very good to a small detail, and lively. We love all the main permanent exhibitions. You can literally spend half a day there without noticing that the time has past. (Hint skip the first exhibition room if you have short time, highlights are about Hong Kong people history not the prehistoric or geological ones.)
More children can enjoy as well and lot and lots to talk about or learn during the visits with the little ones.response / report this review -

Fantastic place for children and adults alike though for most travellers, this destination isn't at the top of the list of things to do in Hong Kong.
Admittedly, shopping, eating, Disneyland and Ocean Park should take priority during any visit to Hong Kong but this place is truly amazing for it's a educational and entertainment value.
The museum tells the story of natural history of the region and modern history of the inhabitants of the land in the most engrossing way.
I was lucky to witness a special exhibit on Central Asian countries along the silk route while I was there.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the island.response / report this review -

Located right across from the Hong Kong Science Museum, it's a great place to learn about Hong Kong starting from its geological origins to the mid 1990s. Lots of large sets allow you to immerse yourself into the times while learning about how life was like.
There is alot to read, watch, and listen to so it's fun for someone interested in getting a snapshot of Hong Kong history and culture. They have tours offered everyday in different languages (you'll need to check their schedule since English is not offered everyday day) or you can get a pre recorded guide.
Personally we really enjoyed the visit and looking at the detailed sets. Also it's free on Wednesdays!response / report this review -

This is what all history museums wish they could be honestly one of the BEST history museums I've ever been to. The huge "Hong Kong Story" exhibit is beautiful and comprehensive. It took me more than 2 hours just to finish that exhibit! I was captivated by the incredible dioramas and artefacts. There's great English signage and tons of videos to watch, as well. If you're in Hong Kong, be sure to come here!

A must go. Very informative but interesting. I went there 5 to 6 times but still want to go back. It starts from millions of years ago when Hong Kong was under the sea, volcano activities and how the Hong Kong contour formed, then how ancient people lived and then to the dynasties and ended up the current Hong Kong. my parents enjoyed old photos and even cartoon books which they read and was so happy. a lot of historic videos are available the place is suitable for from kids to the seniors

It's a well done museum that start from the natural formation of Hong Kong islands until the modern time. It's gives detail information geologically and archeologically. Then they also explains on their main ethnic groups from the past. The most crucial part was the history how the British obtain this land until return back to China. It have lots of showcase to let you experience the past. It's a must to visit.

If you love history, culture, and learning you should visit Hong Kong Museum.
This is a nice museum, and will be worth your time.
We're tourists visiting Hong Kong for the 4th time and it was a wise decision to include this at our itinerary.
2-3hrs is quite enough to enjoy and explore the Museum. There are two sections, the free and the paid. Just go to the free section, it will be enough already.
There's also a cafe that you can go for breaks and lunch meals. Price is fair and serving is good for sharing (at least from our point of view).response / report this review -

Very cool museum, right next to the science museum. Their permanent exhibition (it's free!) provides both a visually and audio introduction to Hong Kong history. Huge displays and sets for you to walk through, as well as short films in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. They have a cafe for food and drinks within the building.

A must visit if you're in Hong Kong! The museum is free and everything is well maintained. The exhibits are very informative and well designed. I am really amazed to know that a space this elaborate with so much content is free. I was really happy to spend my time here as a visitor.

One of the best local-history museums I've ever been to. Went on a whim and found a multi-floor museum which spans prehistoric settlement, indigenous people, and modern history up to the last few decades. Very good English signage. Learned a great deal.

This might be the best museum I've ever been to, I thoroughly enjoyed the free history of Hong Kong exhibition. I actually didn't get through it all on my first visit and came back the next day to finish it off. It's got all the things you want to see in a museum from in-depth information to models and displays including life size buildings and street replicas you could walk in and explore. Thoroughly recommended if you're into history and museums.

This museum is massive and very informative and vibrant. The weekends can bring big crowds but it's still not too bad. If you're a history nerd you may want to come during the week so that you can fully enjoy the time and take it all in.

Excellent way to spend the day. Walks you through the history of Hong Kong from 400 million years ago to 1997. Free on Wednesdays but there is no English tour on that day. You can rent an audio guide for 10HKD. If you’re short on time I would recommend skipping the prehistoric section and start either at the opium wars section.

Free! (Hong Kong side)
Spent about an hour and a half and saw the entire place and gift store. Perfect place to avoid the mid day heat. If you're short on time skip the prehistoric side and go straight to section 4 the different ethnic groups in China and spend half an hour there.response / report this review -

We almost bought tickets to the paid exhibit, but the kind security guard in the front told we should tour the free Hong Kong exhibit first. So happy we took his advice!
While the exhibit starts out slowly, detailing rock formations and fossils found in Hong Kong's prehistoric times, it operates on a distinct timeline that tells the complete history of Hong Kong up until today. There are many interactive exhibits, such as a full size replica of a junk boat that you can climb on, and entire stores and and buildings are recreated . There are also a few theaters that play videos that are both interesting and informative, giving meaning to the exhibits. It took a few hours to go through, so it is great for a rainy day. I highly recommend that everyone visit this museum, as knowing the background story of the things that make up this great city will surely enrich your entire Hong Kong experience.response / report this review -

I really enjoyed my visit here, especially with the "Exploring Ancient Egypt" exhibition (Summer 2017).
The museum is interesting for people of all ages with lots of playground kind of areas for kids and lots of interactive stuff for everyone. Especially the history of HK part was very well put together
Would definitely recommend more than 3 hours of staying and exploring. Can't wait for the next temporary exhibition!response / report this review -

Brilliant museum providing very kinesthetic experience and opportunity for experiential, hands-on learning.
The permanent exhibitions cover geographical/geological and environmental history as well as human history.

One of my favourite diorama museums, each installation is meticulous and so well thought out. This time there was a toy exhibit and the play area was filled with toys and kids happily playing. Except at the hot wheels station where a stern docent stood watch batting kids away from taking down new play structures with no explanation. My kid was thoroughly disappointed considering he loves playing with car toys.

Well presented and gorgeous museum all about the history, culture and geography of the Hong Kong area.
Right next to the Science Museum and easy transport links such as the Tsim Sha Tsui and East TST stations.

This is a gorgeous and well-executed museum showcasing the origins of Hong Kong, going back to the formation of the land through the reunification.
I returned a second day, after just an hour the first day before closing time, because I was enjoying the exhibits and showcasing of the rich end detailed story.
I love that details are deep and specific, but also quite concise and focused.
This is a must see for anyone interested in the people, history, and/or culture of HKSAR and surrounding community.response / report this review -

Great way to introduce yourself to Hong Kong (and for free). "The Hong Kong Story" permanent exhibit is very informative and well done! You learn so much about HK's history from millions of years ago to present day. They did a good job with the design and layout of the 8 galleries/era of history. There is a lot to absorb, so a stop at the cafe midway through is a good way to break it up, and enjoy a cup of tea and/or lunch.
