It's a bit of the beaten path, meaning you'll have to walk a bit after taking the subway. But that's not a big problem, the signs from the subway will guide you. This place is located at one of the old forts that were built to protect the Hong Kong harbour, which has been somewhat restored. They explain in much greater detail the history of Hong Kong from a warfare and military perspective than the Museum of history does. You will learn about the opium wars, Japanese occupation and the history of not only this fort, but also the history of coastal defense in the region. It is a particularly nice place to go when the weather is nice. There's a small cafeteria that sells small dishes and drinks and it has an outdoor area which is pleasantly quiet and shrouded in trees and bushes (a veranda, nothing fancy). You will get around in a wheelchair or with a stroller if you need that for your kids.

Very well done museum regarding Hong Kong's long history of invasions and defensive tactics. There are activities for kids, but the museum is best for adults. All displays are in English and Chinese, the museum is a short walk from the MTR and the entire experience is free.

The Coastal Defence Museum used to be a artillery battery and a barracks quartering the artillerymen. It’s since then converted to the only museum in Hong Kong focused in the military stationed in Hong Kong. Other than the main subject, there are also some other regular topical exhibitions!

Please do note that it closes every Thursday.

It's a big piece of historical landmark on the hills. Lots of different things to see, from the museum at the top to the view of the fish market at the bottom. Spend my afternoon there.

Best views in HK, the Peak has nothing on this museum. Cafe is wonderful too, with indoor and outdoor seating.

If you can only visit one museum, visit this one. It's in a beautiful location, easily accessible by public transit with great views of East Hong Kong. The visit will take you about 60-90 minutes. It's very educational on Hong Kong history which I found very interesting. It's also very well divided and explained. There are a few videos, some physical room to visit. Overall one of the best museum I've visited in my life!
The special exhibit on War Correspondents was very informative as well.
Free on Wednesdays. The place wasn't too crowded but the time we left (1pm).
Highly recommend.

It's free and offers some nice views of the river and the city. The coastal defences have not been very well preserved though.

A fun outing for an hour or two. Quite a number of nice military displays and a large number of steps outside, particularly to the torpedo room and back. Nice views across to the Kowloon peninsular, especially Devil’s lookout. Easy to get to from the MTR station, and is next to the fish wholesale market.

Beautiful views, average exhibits, terrible security guards.

I've visited three times, and each time I've had negative experiences with the staff. Just to give you an example: yesterday when I arrived, I bent down to toe my shoe. Suddenly, a female security guard runs over to me to say I can't tie my shoe there and need to move. A few minutes later, my child was running to the bathroom when another guard yelled "no running." I nearly lost it when a third guard told me to park my child's baby stroller. Seriously, there is a security guard every 10 feet! They ruin a perfectly nice place.

Very good site for parenting. Kids will learn about hk history. There are canteen and workshops to let you spend a whole day with your kids. Highly recommend for hkgers!

The route and the displays are well designed and placed. One can learn a lot about coastal defense history of Guangdong province and Hong Kong tracing back to Ming dynasty. On the outdoor platforms one can have a nice view of the chokepoint of the Victoria Bay.

You can learn a lot about how Hong Kong defend their land. If you like photographing, I recommend you to go there. Besides, there are a great view at the top of the hill, which gives me relaxing feel!

If you are a military history enthusiast or your child likes machines, go. For the visual mind into social history, it's just OK.

The exhibition in the redoubt is nevertheless an interesting account of Hong Kong's history.

Great location. There's more to see than the name would have you believed. They tried to make the place a bit interactive but kids will especially love the guns, cannons on display. Need to be ok with walking steep slopes to really dig into

Historic fortress with free indoor and outdoor exhibits, great for learning the history of British rule, Japanese occupation and contemporary militarization in Hong Kong, gives lots of perspective! Definitely worth a 2 hour visit if you happens to be around Shau Kei Wan, or if you're really into military history. Will visit again!
