We went in 2010 there - this was a long journey, but definetly this place was one of the best hostels in the world. Good food, good times with great people and you could hang around and spend days enjoying the view! We went to semuc champai! And even the view out of the showers was breath-taking. good times - I'll never forget!

The best hostel I have ever been to! Incredible view waking up every morning. Directly on the river from Semuc Champey. Delicious vegetarian food and home grown chocolate. Free two sessions of yoga every day with the amazing Danielle!

I had an amazing time due to the remote location, stunning lodge, delicious food, helpful staff and great people there. They give you a ride to the lodge, which is an experience in itself.
Their tour around Semuc Champey is incredible, it includes a small hike, the pools, cave exploration and tubing down the river.

Super nice. If you want more of a tribe / family type of feel then this is your place. If you want more of a hostel then head to one of the others. Here they make you feel part of the place. Volunteers help operate things and locals tend the gardens and cool amazing food. Don't worry about being away from the Chapmey pools as that is it a nice walk away plus it's only one of many things to do.

Dogtopia! Amazing operation here. Cool people, cool dogs, great food and relaxed vibes. Lots of local feels around the area too. Nice hikes and a super radical tube ride from the big yellow bridge! Highly recommend Utopia!

    Change in Management!
While the location is remote and the facilities nicely built, they are not kept clean. The volunteer staff give this hostel a little soul, because right now there is no real Management around. The one guy in charge is more concerned about be seen as cool than keeping guests happy. Very expensive food and shuttles.

If you plan to only spend 1day at the pools, I would rather stay at Lanquin. Then you'll have to drive there 1 time as well and your not forced to accept their high pricing.

    No WIFI, since weeks!!

My group and around 20-30 other people got extreme food poisoning. One girl was found passed out on the ground due to the severity. She could't barely talk or walk. When something like this happens people should be refunded their stay and food. The place is very beautiful but help yourself and do not stay there.

Super relaxing spot deep in the jungle. The volunteer staff were incredibly friendly and John, the owner, seemed to go out of his way to make sure everyone who came through his place was happier when they left than when they arrived. It was awesome to unplug for a couple days and just enjoy the jungle. If you're looking for a party hostel, this isn't it. But in my opinion, that's not such a bad thing.

No hot water, one morning with internet in three days, no confortable places to sit, meal are expensives, no coffee for free with the breakfast (the coffee should be free for everyone). The staff insist to sell expenvives tours and activities : you can do everything by yourself for much less. The french owner (not the workers) is passive agressive and was not susceptible or patient to our requests. Also, there is too much music and too loud during the day and night : silence please. People can smoke in the commun area. Nevertheless, the place is remarquable and everything is well organised. On the way to Semuc Champey, there's a small and typically restaurant (tienda) where you can eat for very cheap. For lunch, eat just before entering Semuc, buying food from locals, there with their barbecue.

Excellent owners, they go above and beyond to ensure you have all the information you need about the tours and transportation. Their kindness really shows throughout the hostel, great facilities (amazing cacao workshop and tour!) and the dinner portions are very big! Great setting to relax and chill out. Would definitely recommend and return to Utopia.

+ volunteers are really good staff
+ in Happy hour some drinks for 15Q (but really small glass)
    +beautifull building
    +close to river
    +WiFi included
+they pick up you in lanquin for free if you stay
    BUT

-when you pay everything, it's like they don't know you and 25Q to get to lanquin? Wtf?
Everything is made that you pay (breakfast, lunch, dinner,) and almost no way to eat in different place
    -no communal kitchen
-for service they offer is really expensive
    - cold shower during days and days
    - no lights almost everywhere, sometimes was really dangerous
    - beds and hammocks they are not in room, so it's getting really cold, that's not a problem, problem is, that they don't give you almost nothing really warm to cover you. With two huddys and my blanket I had just a little bit cold. My friends couldn't sleep
    - if you wanna pay with card, 5% commission plus they accept just payment in dollars with 6.5so is crazy how much you overpaid.
-allowed smoking in place where people eat? In eco place? Really?
-friends wanted to book flight, took 40min book one flight.. Super slow, nobody was there in that abandoned WiFi zone
-no towels for free or deposit
    - no lockers for staff
-hard to charge phone /laptop in night

Really sad.. If I could leave place the next day, I would love.. But it was Sunday and shuttles finish earlier :/

If you are really rich, you will enjoy here (except the cold showers)

location is nice and vibe is good. the hostel itself felt still a bit strange. if u sleep in a dorm no lockers are provided. even tho the dorms are cheap the food and tours are quite pricey. I didn't have dinner but almost Q70 for tamales with a bit rice and salad seems to much for me. i went back to lanquin in one of the shuttles that pick u up. after being already unfriendly they dropped me at the very beginning of town even knowing that i am going to stay there the night to just drive by when i was walking down. for a paid service this is poor.

Why only 1 star? They only have a lockerroom with all bags inside and somebody stohle my emergency money from my bag. It was about $90. Unfortunately I noticed it when I was gone.
Please be aware of that and I hope they start building lockers.
