once the backbone of the economy - still proud of the achievements these days
I visited the port on a cruise ship, and walked around the factory perimeter to see what I could learn of the operation. A security guard suggested that I should ask for a tour. They usually set up tours in advance, but were able to accommodate me by going with a family a bit later. There were 4 of us on the tour, plus the tour guide and the tour was in English.
It was amazing!
After a brief safety briefing (watch out for moving belts and hot surfaces, and no children), we went on a 90 minute walking tour. We saw cane being delivered, transported, chopped, and squeezed. Then the liquid was cooked and crystallized, and separated in huge centrifuges, which we could look down into while they did a full cycle. We got to taste pure brown sugar, still warm from the crystallization step! I took a second handful! Then it went to either packaging or bulk storage, both of which we saw.
Our guide was very knowledgeable, and we asked lots of questions. We also saw the power and steam generation areas and the control booths for each section of the plant. We talked with several of the operators.
What was most pleasant, was that we were actually treated as adults! We climbed metal stairways, walked past open conveyor belts, spinning machinery, scalding hot boilers and furnaces and they trusted us to not be stupid. What a welcome change from the USA's constant paranoid warnings and restrictions because of fear of litigation.
And, at the end of the tour no gift shop, no opportunity to buy, and not event a contribution jar.
This factory tour was better than any planned shore excursion from the cruise ships that I've been on.
Fiji's backbone
