My review is based on my recent experience during the last Timkat holiday, which is a known busy time and the best time to visit Gondar. Unfortunately i did not have a pleasant stay at the place because when I called the manager, 4 days in advance, he told me clearly that while the hotel was already almost fully booked for the night i needed, he also said "dont worry, Madam, you still come here and we will find a place for you" he also added that some people normally don't come, sometime due to change of mind if security issues arise, etc. etc. I want to add that he was really convincing on this, with a warm tone of voice and good English. But because I still did not trust him entireley (i am an experienced traveller and I know ethiopians.) i insisted in asking him if that's confirmed and so that I should NOT book another hotel for that night and that i was going to be ok. He repeated that "we are going to find something for you, do not worry, do not worry". I also called him back several times during the previous days to check and to remind him about my arrival time and date. In trusting him, i also took courage from some of the reviews here that said that he is very helpful. So I decided to trust his many reiterations of the above agreement and kept my 'booking' with him. Now, the flight was very late and I got to Gondar at 9pm. During the transit in Addis and Axum, I had informed him that the flight was delayed of 1.5 hour (nothing i had control over). As soon I arrived in Gondar, of course I called him to inform him i had arrived and I said that i was going to take a taxi to go to the hotel. Unfortunately now the tone of his voice as soon as I was in Gondar, had changed and he simply said that the hotel was full - that he had no place for me and that i was basically on my own. You can immagine what it meant for a solo female traveller at 10pm in a remote region of Ethiopia to look for alternative accomodation when everything was full and being alone, after he had said many times that whatever the case, he was going to help me. Of course, he couldn't gain anything from me now - as his bookings all showed up, so he simply left me in the street. Enough said, i think. I am sharing this to balance some of the other reviews, as to avoid that other people will trust his words as I did and find themselves in a very difficult and potentially even dangerous situation.

Friendly service, people who know their town and are able to share their expertise with tourist, rooms clean and good value for money. What can you expect more?

Nice Backback Lodge close to the castle. We had nice rooms and realy nice and good service. The Housekeeping also takes care of lundary and shoes e.g. when you just came back from the Simien Mountains. Airport shuttel etc. is available at the reception. The Breakfast was realy greate with espacially the Baguette, fresh fruits and the bananna pencakes. ;-)
The view from the "rooftop" restaurant is quite nice but could be a little bit windy in the evening. So take some warm clothes. You are still at about 1800 m above see level and nights can get cold even in Ethopia.

Staff is extra nice. Simon, the manager, really tries to make everybody happy.

However the downstairs dorm is a disgrace. Only one tiny bathroom for 6 people, water running over one bed and a bunch of fleas that infected most of my group.

    Stay away of this dorm.

my wife and I have been travelling for a 5 days in Ethiopia and we've stayed in several different price range accommodation. This Hotel/Lodge was the most expensive place we stayed In all of Ethiopia. ($55 for king size bed room)
The manager (simon) and the staff were super welcoming and nice. A Heaven from hustlers and yelling locals on the street with an armed guard at the entrance. located right in the center with a great view, both from the room (to the cute garden) and from the restaurant terrace to a lush valley, where you enjoy the included breakfast.
we got complimentary tea and coffee and our shoes were cleaned upon our arrival. There was a hot shower waiting for us and there is wifi reception in the room (yet only 2 bars for us).
Breakfast was simple yet nice with peanut butter, bread, eggs of your choosing, and fruit.
Most of the services which the hotel offers are really expensive and we thought it was bit overpriced. We left after one night and found another great place for the third of the price. Although it is located on top of the the royal area walls, it doesn't have a view of the palace and the entrance is not really close to the hotel.

Sadly, most of the time the electric power was down so we didn't really get to enjoy the amenities.
For this price I think it is understandable to expect the hotel to have a backup generator. In Addis Ababa we paid few dollars less and the hotel had a backup generator.

There is a glass front door to the room (with curtain) so noise is heard from the outside in (and the inside out..for you loud ones) so take this into consideration.

Well designed, and they also have a tour agency but I would compare prices with other agencies around.

Conclusion: Great place yet over priced, I would have stayed if it was 20$ less a night

One of the best places to stay in Gondar. Comfortable rooms, a great view, especially during sunrise, and a great breakfast make this a great base from which to explore the town.

One of my favourite places in Ethiopia. Seyoum is an amazing host, from the free airport shuttle to the delicious breakfast on the unbeatable terrace. It's a wonderful, homely place, ideally located for exploring Gondar.
