Very rustic, but incredibly lovely. Food is simple, authentic and delicious. The surroundings are idillic, with natural hot springs walking distance from the bungalows!

Rincon de la Vieja is a fantastic, rustic and authentic lodge. It has horseback riding dialed in and the rooms are clean. There is only one light in the center of each room, but they brighten up once they've been turned on for a few minutes. Our room had a queen sized bed plus two twin bunk beds. The shower offered both hot and cold water (an uncommon luxury in parts of Costa Rica) and was clean as well. The lodge also has a bar and pools for guests to cool off in, including hammocks in the shade outside of almost all the rooms. I would recommend this lodge/hotel to anyone looking for an authentic stay inside the Rincon de la Vieja National Park.

Be prepare for very rustic. The sweeting is beautiful, but the amenities are few. If you want quiet, you get that, but if you want clean and quiet, and comfortable, look elsewhere.

The Highs: Wonderful property. Kind, proactive staff. Wide selection of activities: horseback rides, zip lining, hiking, hot springs. Gorgeous centennial trees and lush gardens. The lodge boasts beautiful surroundings, a swimming pool and artificial lake.
The Lows: Trouble with plumbing: low pressure in supply line, toilets flush with inconsistent effectiveness.
Beds squeak and mattresses afford poor support.
Food: Meal included in lodge fee: typical breakfast, bread, butter, jam, gallo pinto, scrambled eggs, fried plantains, salchichón sausage, breakfast cereal and fruit.
Gallo Pinto and eggs were bland and greasy. Food taste and quality was wanting.
General Impression: With improvement, the lodge delivers everything a trekker needs to visit the wonders of Volcán Rincón de la Vieja.
