This is a special place. The tour was excellent and I appreciated that the guides are volunteers from all over the world. We has the option of taking the tour in several languages. Of course, the sloths are ridiculously cute but Jaguar Rescue is doing important work in protecting and rehabilitating vulnerable animals. Note-- there are wild animals wandering free here, including a Pelican named Pistachio who is a little aggressive. I always felt safe here, but if you or your children are more tentative around animals, let your tour guide know in advance and they can help you avoid any unwanted encounters.

Visited here today. This place is amazing. The staff evidently care deeply for the animals, and it makes the whole experience feel very genuine. Our volunteer tour guide, Sarah, was fantastic - engaging, funny, and knowledgeable.
The highlight of the visit was seeing the sloths, but there are many interesting creatures with unique (and often sad) histories. I learned plenty and came away feeling inspired by their work. I highly recommend a visit, and bringing donation materials if possible!

This was an awesome experience. The tour was very interesting, out tour guide Becky knew lot of stuff, especially about sloth since she has a PhD in sloths.
Every single cent you pay helps all of those animals in need, which they are fixing up there and if possible release into the wilderness again.
You see a lot of different animals, from babies to adults. The variety of animals depends on what comes in, so it is always a little bit different.
You really get the feeling that all of the volunteers there love what they are doing and that it is for a good cause.
I can only recommend to stop there whenever you are in the area!

This place is absolutely incredible.
They are really doing important work here, I would recommend checking their website before you visit and see if you are able to bring any of the supplies they have a hard time acquiring.
Our tour through the center was very informative and you can really see how much the volunteers care about these animals.
I'm am saddened that a place like this is needed as a result of our impact on the animals natural environment, but I am grateful that there are so many people willing to donate their time to help the animals out.
I hope someday soon to volunteer here myself.

This is not a sad experience, it showed a lot of hard work and dedication into providing for the injured animals. Was contemplating not going but it's definitely worth it! Guides know so much, were great with making eye contact and didn't mind laughing whole imitating sloth bathroom habits.

Well worth the price to support the animals!

We had a wonderful experience at the rescue centre! People are amazing and passionate about animals! They are doing a great job, saving and rescuing many different animal species! We can see how greatly they are trying to save them and be helpful! You have seen so many different animal species and great stories behind each of them! Our guide was extremely passionate and he left us with an incredible great feeling about the job they are doing!

The Best Thing I've Done in Costa Rica // Central America!

I am so glad that I came to Puerto Viejo and visited this amazing animal sanctuary! I've been to a few similar places across the globe and this one really sticks out for their passion, knowledge and care for the animals whom they (temporarily) home!

I was lucky enough to be part of one of their two free tours (9:30 / 11:30 each day). The big crowd was first split into language groups (Spanish, German, English, French) and then into smaller groups if needed (English).

Then for the next 2 hours we were lead around the centre learning about each of the fascinating animals whom the centre are aiding their quick return to their natural habitats. Our tour guide, Garret?, lead us with perfect pace, explaining lots but also not too much.

Seeing these animals in the wild isn't the easiest, but witnessing them while they recover and knowing that they are cared for and (if possible) will be released back into the wild is perfect.

Totally worth the $20. The best thing I've done for months!

Had a fantastic experience here. Tickets were a little expensive ($20/per person) but the money goes directly towards funding the center which, you'll learn on your tour, does tons for these animals. Depending on where you're from some may not be as exciting (cayman, crocodile, pelican), but who can beat baby monkeys and wild monkeys meeting?

Make no mistake, this is not a Zoo, this facility is not primarily focused on tourists. This is primarily an animal rescue center. We were told they admit over three hundred rescue animals each year. Many young folks working there are volunteers. Having said that this is still a wonderful place to visit. You will hear stories about animals welfare told with conviction and passion. You might see sloths, monkeys, wild cats within a reach of hand plus many more. Worth your time, pay it a visit.

I had a great time there. Rescued animals are treated well and some of them can run freely. You can see or take picture of them pretty close. They have variety of animals. Love it! Tours only at 9:30 & 11:00 am.

If you want to see big cats you will disappointed, but there are lots of great animals here. Sounds like they are doing good work. Our guide was very informative and clearing cared alot for the animals. Tour lasted over two hours and was decent value. Either way money is going to a good cause.

I was really happy and excited to be able to tour this animal sanctuary. The facility runs on volunteers, vets and donations. We got to learn about the founders of the sanctuary; which is really sweet. They educate locals; kids/adults and tourist to recognize different ways to coexist with animals around Puerto Viejo. Their focus is rehabilitation and treating acutely wounded/ill animals and work towards releasing them back into their habitat. I loved our tour guide as well, she was super knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely the highlight of the trip!

They're an "all animal" sanctuary pretty much and didn't see actual jaguars when I went in for the public tour. However, I love animals regardless and it was well worth it. Saw sloths, a couple of jungle cats, monkeys, birds, crocodiles, a pecory, a pelican, snakes, a baby anteater, and plenty more. As they get plenty of visitors you get split into smaller groups of 10-12 and we managed to have a sloth biologist as our guide and you can tell that she loved what she did and was a fantastic educator. They're doing everything they can to help sick/injured animals and they try to release them back in the wild (if not blocked by government or other factors outside of their control), so it's clearly not a zoo as they let their birds fly free and other animals roam around. Small note: if you're planning to buy souvenirs in Costa Rica, buy them here as proceeds help in rehabilitating the animals.

Highly recommended. The tour was $20 but over an hour and half and very close up with the animals. Also, they a doing a great service so it is good to support their efforts at rehabilitation.

Just an FYI, there are no jaguars. But we still had an incredible time. You get to see a lot of reptiles, monkeys, sloths, and an ocelot. We learned about each animal we saw and their story. This place really does what's best for the animal. No contact with the animals is allowed. It's a small center but worth visiting.

Really loved our time here and there was so much to see, this included:

Sloths, Crocodiles, Owls, Deer, exotic insects and lizards.

The attraction was more expensive than a lot of other attractions in the area (for my budget at least) but with that said, you can see that all of your money is going to an incredibly worthy cause.

The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating so you really do believe these animals are very well looked after (unlike the sort of vibe you get at zoos).

All in all, I would recommend this to absolutely everyone!

The center rescues injured animals and reintroduces them into the wild. The tour was extremely informative. It's impressive how well run the center is, given that it's almost exclusively volunteer staff. Admission price little steep but all of it goes to running the center.

Very well run place. They do the tours in multiple languages so everyone can be accommodated. The center houses many different kinds of animals so there is lots to see. Cost is $20 US and well worth it. One of the must things to do if you are playing tourist in this area.
