AMAZING, ABSOLUTE PARADISE. GORGEOUS hotel, very small very boutique, the pools are never overcrowded, upscale guests, outstanding service. Currently here and we wished we had booked it much longer. Super romantic, great drinks, all made with fresh fruit, food is also really good. Best money ever spent.

My fiance and I spent two weeks in Costa Rica in January traveling to three different destinations, one of which was Manuel Antonio where we stayed at Makanda. The 5 nights we stayed in Makanda were by far the best of our trip, and I say that even though we thoroughly enjoyed our entire experience across the country. The service at Makanda is impeccable on all points. From our initial greeting to our departure every experience was intentional on behalf of the staff.

Makanda is situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific and every view from all the rooms, both pools, and the restaurant are perfect. While we loved everything about our stay at Makanda, our favorite was the breakfast on the terrace pool every morning. The coffee, food, and service was of such high quality that even though we are now far from Ocean views, the piece we still miss most was enjoying our breakfast every morning.

The other great aspect of Makanda is there are a limited number of rooms, so even when it is "full" it is never crowded. You get to know the guests a bit as there are only a handful of people staying. And Manuel Antonio itself is a wonderful little town. We took the opportunity to walk the half mile (uphill) most evenings to get dinner at one of the fun restaurants on the main road, but it is also an easy cab ride to the top if you desire.

We have been a lot of places and generally make a point to keep our travel to new places at this point in our lives. But both of us agree we want to get back to Makanda and spend even more time sooner rather than later.

We went to this heavenly place 2 years ago for 10 days and swore to come back! This time we came back to an even more beautiful and welcoming surrounding.. We received a welcoming bottle of champagne with a note from the host waiting for us in the room. We stayed in a gorgeous villa with a wonderful ocean view over the infinity pool (of which they have 2!) The villa was beautifully designed and art-crafted, and had that bedding which you just don't want to get out of ;)

A very nice place to spend the vacation and relax. The staff is very attentive especially Luis in the small bar. In the reception they were not very attentive but in all other places the people treated us wonderfully. I highly recommend this place.

Very beautiful designed hotel and surrounded with very amazing views of the National Manuel Antonio park . The infinity pool is a haven:) and you don't want to leave. Friendly and helpful staff. Room, towels and sheets were fresh and clean. Breakfast and dinner was very tasty. If I would have another opportunity to return there - I would defiantly do so. And will recommend it to my friends.

Beautiful place where you feel in the middle of the rainforest. Monkeys are all over the hotel so you can observe them very close. The pools are magical. The service is nice. Instead of a breakfast menu you have to select amongst 7 choices of breakfast on the menu.

I came here for a bday getaway & it was spectacular. The concierge & their hospitality was beyond amazing! They went above & beyond to surprise me w cake & champagne (didn't even ask for any of it, all thanks to Alberto )! Loved every moment that I was there! Would & have recommend this place to many others!

Had dinner here last night at suggestion of our concierge. The food was absolutely awesome but the service of the facility was terrible. We arrived at the restaurant in the rain despite the umbrellas we were all soaking wet. All of the other patrons were offered towels except us. The restaurant was extremely noisy and the band played entirely too loud. you couldn't even have a conversation. The restaurant patrons were also extremely loud, yelling and cheering. Getting our drinks took entirely too long but the food came fairly quickly. After we received our bill it was entirely too long before the waiter came back to pick up the bill and card. We were told a golf cart would pick us up at the top of the hill to take us to the gate but the cart never showed. We walked down to the gate in the rain soaking wet. The cart driver was sitting at the gate playing on a cell phone and asked us how we were doing and 5 minutes of sitting there, extremely frustrating. Least to say we will never return to this place and I don't suggest anyone else do either.

My husband and I visited Makanda last week on our honeymoon. We stayed for 7 nights experienced a truly luxurious, romantic getaway. I cannot say enough amazing things about this hotel! The staff, food, rooms, pools, amenities, and location blew me away. I would love to share specifics of our trip because this hotel deserves credit for their incredible ability to impress.

We flew into San Jose and arranged a 3-hour drive through Makanda staff to taxi us to the resort. George greeted us right at the airport after customs and was so friendly and inviting! The drive was surprisingly fine because of the beautiful scenery you must pass to get to Makanda. We drove along the Pacific Ocean and saw many animals along the way including crocodiles, macaws, and more! When you drive through Quepos, you drive to the very top of the hill where Makanda lies - the perfect oasis in the middle of the rainforest!

The staff are so friendly and epitomize Pura Vida. Darwin, Jorge, and Luis are some that come to mind, but everybody we encountered was great. We stayed in the Deluxe Ocean Villas and were of course impressed with the modern amenities and design of the room. Some small details to note are the air conditioner right above the bed and the dream shower! So impressive. During our stay, we saw monkeys that came right up to us on the balcony, a sloth, and many lizards and birds.

The food on the resort while expensive is not in my opinion overpriced. It was honestly some of the best food I have eaten. We splurged a few meals at the restaurant and sushi bar, and enjoyed happy hour drinks every day from 4-6. Do yourself a favor and order the Beef Carpaccio! The breakfasts are just as high-quality and are included in the cost of your stay. In the business of saving money, we did make a few ventures to the Supermarket and the town of Quepos to try local food. The supermarket and several restaurants are just a 10 minute walk from the hotel or a $10 cab into the town. I loved the balance of luxurious, romantic meals one day and local nachos the next.

The only activity we booked through Makanda was horseback riding to a waterfall which was incredibly fun and an experience I will remember for life. Booking was super easy - we just called the front desk the night before and paid the tour guide directly with cash. We also spent a full day at Manuel Antonio beach and another shopping for souvenirs in Quepos.

Thank you to Hotel Makanda by the Sea for our dream honeymoon. We cannot wait to come back! Seriously. Stay here and you will not be disappointed.

The hotel was really pretty and the staff were amazing! They really took the time to make you feel at home. However I am only giving 4 stars. The first reason is that everything at the hotel was insanely overpriced. If I am already spending $300+ to stay here a night you would think the hotel could afford to have better prices. Also they closed down around 9:30. We went out for a late dinner one night and when we returned it was pouring rain but there was no one there o drive us to our room. We had to walk in the rain. Little things could be improved to make this place amazing.

Fell in love with this unique boutique hotel from the website and reviews like these. Let me tell you the reviews and pictures cannot compare to seeing it first hand!! We decided to elope to Costa Rica and Makanda took the absolute best care of us! Alberto, Luis, Darwin and Coco went the extra mile any chance they could. The breakfast is filling and has many options. The fruit and passion fruit juice is probably the best I've ever had. Perfect before a day of hiking the jungle. Giant rooms. Romantic poolside sea views. Makanda Cheesecake is a must, it's not what you're used to. My wedding couldn't have been more beautiful. Thank you Makanda by the Sea. I already miss it.

Makanda by the Sea, is a beautiful boutique hotel. The service throughout the entire property from Darwin at the reception desk, to the waiter Luis, at the pool restaurant, to the front gate security guard was outstanding!!!

The food selection and the Chef had surpassed our expectations. My girlfriend and I actually enjoyed dinner at the Makanda more than in the city. Get the banana chocolate cake; I'm a personal trainer but couldn't resist ordering it all 4 nights:)

The Makanda property was flawless. The new owner (an architect) has done an impeccable job with every little detail. He's kept a very modern style to the property with organic accents throughout the rooms and pool. We loved the landscape, it was like our little Utopia.

Hands down I'd come back again. I hope this helps. Also some of the pictures of the pool are not updated. I've added some myself.

Hotel Makanda is exceptional! The views are Breathtaking! Waking up to the sounds of the wildlife surrounding your room is like a dream! Stay here.you will not be disappointed! We stayed in villa #11 and it was gorgeous, modern and clean. Breakfast was delicious. Thank you to Darwin at the front desk for being so kind and helpful during our stay.you are the best! I would definitely recommend this hotel to my friends and family!

Makanda by the Sea was a wonderful place. We were welcomed by the staff and shown to our beautiful room. If you like wildlife, request room 10. We saw squirrel monkeys, and white faced monkeys, toucans, sloths and many kinds of birds. The monkeys were the highlight of our trip. Danny, at the front desk, was able to get us a guided tour through Manuel Antonio. Darwin was awesome and showed us all about the campus. The food was delicious. The restaurant area around the pool was just beautiful, despite the construction (which was a non issue). I highly recommend this place. It is extremely hip, stylish, and incredibly clean. It is also gated, with a guard on duty, so it is very secure. I cannot say enough nice things and cannot wait to go back!

Amazing place I absolutely loved it. We spent 4 days and it was wonderful. Adults only resort, if you want to get away and relax, forget about stress; this is the place to go. If you are planning on visiting Costa Rica, I Highly recommend it. The service was great, staff was beyond friendly. Rooms are excellent and very clean. The pool area has a stunning view and the facility itself is very accommodating. If you enjoy and appreciate Interior design, you will be fascinated by its magnificent and unique touch. This is definitely the place for you.
