The hostel at Casa Colon is on the second floor of a beautiful historic building. Staff are friendly and fluent in English. A couple minor downsides, depending on how you like to travel: It's usually not too busy, so odds of making new backpacking friends are lower (but on the plus side I only had to share the six bed dorm with one other person). There also isn't a kitchen, but there are plenty of good, cheap restaurants within walking distance.

Currently staying at Casa Colon and would definitely stay again if I come back to Costa Rica. I've stayed in a private room both times and they have been so comfortable. Also very quite which is nice. They have everything you could need here, and the staff have been very helpful with anything I've needed. Would recommend to anyone who is thinking about coming to San Jose.

Very bad service, I was at the bar and the waiter, I think his name is joshue, he told us it was already closed at 8:45 p.m. and he served us in a very rude way almost throwing us the bottle of beer on the table, as if he did not want to work. Very bad experience in this bar, it is a pity because the place is nice, but we will never go back to this place, it is very uncomfortable to be treated this way.

The cleaning staff stole some of my clothes and a $100 bill from my bag. In every other scenario I would assume a roommate took it, but it just isn’t possible for that to happen. Read below for the circumstances:

I was staying in a dorm room and in the morning all my roommates left. I was organising my stuff for the day so I know it was all there. I needed a shower and my room was empty so I put my wallet in my bag instead of the locker for 30mins. At the time I also noticed that a pair of headphones were left behind by one of the backpackers on top of the lockers. By night I double checked all my money and repacked my bag neatly and noticed my stuff was gone (as well as the other backpackers headphones). At this time I was still the only person in the room and the only guest who still had a key. I thought my stuff was collected with lost property somehow with the headphones. When I asked they said there was none and the cleaners were too “honest” to have done it.

This is my second stay and I had a better experience the last time. I like it because it's good value for the money. I paid US30 for three nights. It's clean. This time the bathrooms upstairs (where my room was) weren't working which meant an inconvenient trek to the ones downstairs. They've since been repaired (third day of my stay). Water tends to settle in some of the showers.
Take care to check your room key to see what bed you should be in. I returned from a tour and someone was lying comfortably in mine. I just took his because I'm all about peace and love (haha) but I think this is information the staff needs to give customers when they check in because it has happened on a number of occasions to other people sharing the room where people arriving either think they can take any free bed (the numbers aren't very obvious and a bed may have been made up and have an occupant who's not present) or they confuse the room number with the bed number because they're like 203, 204, 205 etc and the bed numbers are like 03, 04, 05.
Also a housekeeper took my towel thinking Of checked out so I had to pay another US 5 dollar deposit for another towel until we found out it wasn't stolen.
Food is a little more expensive than a local place I foundbut maybe this is to be expected.
These are all just things to consider. I really like the general feel of tge placeiys wooden florsThe staff is awesome. Extremely friendly and full of useful tips. One helped me arrange my trip by bus to the La Paz Waterfalls Gardens.response / report this review -

Not a hostel, but a hotel with 3 dorm rooms. One toilet for ALL the dorms. You're likely to only meet locals since it's a hotel. Public access so I even had a couple beggars come in and ask for money! There was a loco tico in my room who kept assaulting me and calling me a terrorist. The front desk gave me a new room (thank you!), but they knew the guy was crazy and creating problems - so he should have been kicked out. Would never stay here again.

The hotel staff (cleaning ladies) stole my clothes when I was not there. I know 100% it was them because I had the stuff before I got to the hostel. There was also an awkward situation before I had realized my stuff was gone where I came back and everything was gone off my bed - travel pillow, pj's book a beer and earplugs(I never got the earplugs back). I was staying for 3 days so there was no reason for them to have taken my stuff but that was understandable. What was not understandable was the fact that they took all my stuff but left all the garbage pizza and pizza box from other people who left! and other random garbage. And when I was dealing with this situation, the cleaning staff snarled at me for the rest my time there. There is one miserable kitchen lady as well.. overall nice place but am totally never going back because I am missing a dress, a bra, a shirt and socks! Oh there were only ever men staying with me.. I don't think they would steal my stuff.
