UPDATE: The matter below has been rectified. Grupo ANC refunded the amount and went above and beyond to offer a credit beyond that as well. Their head of customer service, Luis Oviedo, was very accommodating and handled the situation well. Maria Jose from the Costa Rican Car Rental Association was also of great help in connecting me to the correct people. Happy to say I will rent with Alamo from here on out, but still be sure to check the glove box for the necessary documents that are supposed to come with the car.
Had the worst experience with Alamo rental cars, especially an employee named Allen. Horrible customer service. They talk to you about the dents on the outside of the car but they don’t mention the cars papers that you need to keep track of. We were charged $100 for loss of documents, but we were never shown these documents when we received the rental car. When I questioned Allen why he never showed me the papers he lied straight to my face and said he did. These papers must have never been in our car when we received it because we didn’t go into our glove box once and always kept our car locked. After a great trip to Costa Rica, this experience really left a negative memory. They were not accommodating and blamed us, saying someone must have shown you, they must have been in there initially. When we asked if the last people were also charged for these documents, they wouldn’t answer. They kept telling us to call Alamo, upon getting back to the US and able to make phone calls, we have now found out the US and this Alamo branch are separate so calling the US branch does nothing. They don’t even have a trip advisor account so we are lost for what to do to rectify the situation. Moral of the story is, double check that all of the cars papers are in the car when you leave the car rental lot. I will NEVER rent from this company again.
Excellent service. Everyone is attentive, airport shuttles run smoothly without any delay.
Excellent customer service! Very good experience during pick-up and drop-off. The site is very clean and well organized. The cars are in good condition and the staff is professional and friendly.
I don't like bait and switch tactics, and paying an exorbinate amount of money for insurance! They will not accept anyone's insurance that they purchase for their trip except there own! We also reserved a VW Toureg or Similar. They give us a Toyota Rush (POS). It couldn't get out of it's own way, a real GUTLESS Wonder! Dangerous here (Costa Rica) were you only have a short distance to pass someone if they are driving extremely slow. And the rear middle seat behind me (Driver) would not slide back because it was broken. So I had my Daughter in Laws knees constantly hitting the back of the seat. And I had to sit closer to the steering wheel than normal. VW would honestly take this vehicle as an insult to say it is A Similar Vehicle!!!! The GPS they rented us went out (shut down twice) within a mile of the location, first time at the guard shack to leave Alamo. We turned back already noticing the extreme lack of power from this vehicle and complained about both to the agent who wrote us up. Btw he was nice, but I think their company forces these individuals into bad situations. He offered us a reduction on the GPS because it offered Hotspot ability and we were able to use our own smartphones for Navigation! Please warn others of renting a car from any agency in Costa Rica of the insurance Scam.
We had a very pleasant experience with Enterprise. The site where we picked up our rental was less than 15 min. from SJO and the staff were very friendly and very helpful when we picked up and returned. Customer service was top notch and our vehicle was just what we needed. Great job Enterprise Costa Rica!
The aspect of Costa Rica that was most vexing and concerning Car rental. Alamo, was straight up good stuff. Though I was on high alert that they were going to try to pull a fast one. They didn't, and in fact, go out of their way to change this big real perception for the county. You still must do your homework here. Bring proof of coverage from your credit card company in writing. Take video or pics of the car before you drive away just to make sure you're not hit with fees later.
I would absolutely use these guys again.
I didn’t have any problems here. Guys were really nice.
Bunch of liars. Allen upgraded me to a 4 x 4 for $10 more a day because he said that I couldn’t get to Monteverde without it. I was fine without it. He said it had a lot of power but it was gutless. He said I could do my whole trip on one tank because it was fuel-efficient. It took three. He told me if I bought a pre-paid tank of fuel he would pay back whatever I didn’t use when I brought it back. They wouldn’t. He rented me a wifi hotspot that would constantly stop working or work badly when on battery power.
So don’t trust anything they say. 2 stars because it didn’t break down.
Very good experience at Alamo. The folks there worked very hard to make sure we knew everything and even took us out to breakfast while our car was being prepared. It was exceptional customer service.
Their website says they have cars onsite with no need to take a shuttle. Unfortunately this was not true. We were shuttled at 11pm to an offsite location. Everything that happened after this point went really well! We did get the upgraded insurance - some of which is mandatory and some is not - but felt better for doing so considering the terrible condition of the roads throughout the country. They gave us a two-level upgrade on the car, too. Oscar was very friendly and helpful!
Regarding insurance: we paid $140 for our rental and $160 for their total insurance package. It sounds like a lot for four days, but it gave us $0 deductible on everything - flat tires, broken windows, theft, damage, scratches, and roadside assistance. The roads are terrible in Costa Rica. The drivers are worse. Get the insurance.
I waited close to 40 min for the airport shuttle to take all the customers to the rental office. All the groups of people that arrived after me at t the airport got off and ahead of me in line; with that and them being short staffed there was another 40 min wait. When I got to the counter the clerk ignored my complaints and eventually chose to serve me. By the end he included a free tank of gas but that wait was brutal after a long late flight in
However Upon returning my vehicle I had quite a different experience which was very effortless and efficient I must say the manager Maykeal (Michael) was amazing and very understanding of what I went through when I arrived and said he would look into it and offered to take care of me the next time me or my family came down to use them.
If you do your research before you go you won't be disappointed. Most of the car rental agencies in Costa Rica give customers unrealistic prices then slam them with the insurance. We used Alamo, and got a realistic price and we knew how much we had to pay before we went there $411 for 14 days for an Automatic SUV (Daihatsu Terios). You can decline the CDW your credit card company will cover you just remember to get a letter saying you are covered.
I've had only pleasant experience. Quick shuttle from the airport. No lines. Got New Toyota Prado. Priced exactly as the estimate. No extra cost above those agreed. Customer service excellent. No problems with car return. Everything was hassle free. I would highly recommend this location. Thank You Jorge and the whole team.Pura Vida!
great company to rent from. friendly and let us extend our return time with no charge
Make sure you get an online submission beforehand, print it and insist on having that exact same price. They will try to get you to pay much more for a bunch of unnecessary insurance, but if your credit card covers basic car insurance, the only extra you need is the third party insurance that can be included in your submission. Other than that we got a really nice car (nicer than the one on the submission) for the same price and got an excellent service from the team. Make sure to get an SUV as the roads can be pretty rough once you get out of San José.
We rented a car from Enterprise and had a wonderful experience. That staff are so enthusiastic, resourceful and informative in regards to your stay in Costa Rica. Extremely friendly and always smiling. You get the vibe that they truly care about you as a client and strive to make sure you receive the utmost professional service.
I believe we dealt with Tom? and he was so friendly and polite.
Made a reservation for a 7 passenger premium vehicle and have been getting the run around ever since. I don't think they have premium vehicles at all. I've been sent to 4 different locations (San Jose, La Fortuna, Liberia, Nosara) with the promise they will have the vehicle, but no location has any. We were forced to drive a beatup small SUV that is almost unbearable to drive. My tall group of friends have made their entire journey across Costa Rica with their knees crammed into the front seat/dash. The email for customer service doesn't work and asking for a call back doesn't happen. Do not rent large and/or premium vehicles from this company!
Oh and remember to give yourself and extra 45i minutes before your flight because you'll be driving 10 min away to drop off your rental off-airport and wait for a shuttle to take you back.
Great place to rent cars from abroad. They were helpful and friendly. Just do your research about the required insurance and laws before you go because they will push the most expensive and "comprehensive" insurance package. Our package was about $350 for midsize SUV, but they wanted to push the upgrades for around $700. Contact your credit card companies for rental car insurance first to cover you beyond that.
Also, make sure you take videos and pictures of damage while they inspect the car with you. 🇨🇷
Be ready for the "hard sell" from Alamo! CDW was supplied by my credit card, and I had the CC company give me a letter saying I was covered, but I had to argue hard to not buy their coverage. And they would not let me get the car without paying for some other liability insurance that costs more than the per day rental fee.
Also, tried to sell a larger, more expensive car.
Also tried to sell roadside assistance, which I thought was always part of a car rental.
nice car rental very uncomplicated.
Terrible!!!! We waited for one hour in line with one people in front of us. There are two guys at the counter, one was in and out of the office and the other one was just sitting there typing invoices?? They push hard to sell extra insurance. Unbelievable - never had such a horrible car rental experience. They are definitely under staff, very disorganized and unprofessional. Please avoid this place at all cost.
Nice people there, good car just again the crap insurance. Even you buy online for $100 they tell you its not working in Costa Rica and you have to buy new for $300 so in fact you gonna spend more money on insurance than for rent and nobody is able to tell you before so you are there and you are just suprised that you have to pay another $300 (over your budget) and $1000 as a deposit etc. :) But I guess is the rest of the companies the same.
Great service, clean cars and no hassle about buying more insurance. Much appreciated.
