Totally terrible-- We get a text on the way to get the car. "Problem with motor cannot deliver car" Had to scramble to find a replacement last minute on Semana Santa. Called and didn't help told to look elsewhere.

Rented from Service Car Rental from March 14th to 20th 2018. Nothing but good things to say about this local company. They had an employee with a Name Tag/Sign at the Arrivals Section of the Airport waiting for us outside, then transported us from the airport to the car rental location off site of the airport.
Had no issues with using the credit card car rental insurance my Mastercard Provided (be sure to bring a copy of the credit card agreement so they can copy it).
Picked up one of their GPS devices, which they demonstrated its use to us. On the car walk around, they pointed out defects in the paint (small scratches, dings/dents) so I would not be charged on return of the vehicle.
On drop off, they waited for my arrival, dropped off the SUV without issue, then transported us back to the airport.
All in all, great Rental Service while being in Costa Rica. They were much less expensive than the other rental services, their price at booking was the price when signing for the rental while in Costa Rica which was a relief. Many horror stories have read about renting from other companies while in Costa Rica about the price quoted is less than half of the price end up paying for when arriving to pick up the car, but this does not occur with this company.
Lastly, the Credit Card hold was taken off the credit card at car drop off and was visible within 1 day.

Had a great experience with Service Car Rental. When I arrived at Liberia airport the agent from the company was waiting for me and took me to the car which was right in the airport parking lot. The car was in excellent condition and worked well. On the day I left the agent met me at the Liberia airport, checked the car for about 5 minutes, and then we were finished. It was a quick and easy process, and the costs were laid out up front. If anyone reading this is planning to go to some of the more rural beach areas, I suggest you take a mid-size or larger SUV since the roads tend to be very bad. We took a mid-size SUV and it was almost too small - had to drive about 10mph for miles on end. As far as the company everything was great!

We found this local company (San Jose airport location) after doing some research. I would definitely recommend this company over any of the multinationals.
In Costa Rica, you will be required to purchase 3rd party insurance, by law, regardless of your auto insurance or credit card coverage - there's no way around it. Service Car Rental states the final price up front, while (I've heard) most of the other companies will wait until your at the rental counter and pull the bait-and-switch. The 3rd party insurance can be quite substantial (maybe as much as the rental price itself). Also, they didn't try to up-sale the collision insurance since he knew my credit card covered that part. Overall, I believe we paid a lot less than we would have at the other companies for a small 4x4.
The guy was at the airport was very friendly and ready to pick us up (he will be at the airport exit holding a sign with your name). Their location is about 10 minutes from San Jose airport. The onsite companies may be slightly more convenient, but there is a tax that will be passed on to you (which I believe is 12% of the total cost).
When we returned the car, there was a major thunder shower. The same guy came out and had us pull under a covered area so we could unload. Within 5 minutes he came back out with the shuttle van to take us to our hotel by the airport. We felt bad, since it was pouring rain and traffic was particularly bad, but he was very friendly about it. It probably would have been a $50+ cab ride.
I would definitely recommend this company.
