You get what you pay for. Is it easier and cheaper to buy product at a roadside stand? Yes. But is the quality worth driving out of your way and paying slightly more? Big yes.
Costa Rica uses the most amount of agrochemicals per hectare in the entire world, aaaaand the govt has a 14% tax on organic food. Do what you will that knowledge, but i appreciate being able to find decent priced staples and some other "fun" purchases here in all ways. Especially glad for their pasture raised meats, grass fed beef tallow, non-seed oils, organic wines, and natural health products like deodorant/toothpaste etc.
I've seen both extranjeros and ticos shopping here, which fortifies the experience.response / report this review -

I really want to like and support this store. My fiance and I have been doing almost weekly grocery shopping at the Green Center for the last 5 months at least. And we've been finding it more and more difficult to keep coming back. Here's why:
1) Product and produce prices are way overpriced -- often between 40% to 80% more compared to buying the exact same items from either AutoMercado or PriceSmart. Nothing special or different was being done for the marked up prices, other than the label "Green".
AutoMercado and PriceSmart follows the same practices of offering boxes and/or biodegradable pouches to bag your groceries. Both also employ locals, and both offer healthy, organic options including fresh produce.
2) They offer refillable options (kombucha, legumes, nuts, beans), and charge a deposit for milk bottles to ensure these are returned and reused, and these bottle deposits are not cheap -- they cost more than the milk itself.
SADLY, they aren’t really interested in maintaining a reusable bottle return system. Why? It is extremely difficult to get deposits back from bottle returns. You'll have to wait about 10-15 minutes (sometimes more, if their POS needed a restart) just so the cashier can find the bottle codes in their system, punch away the details that needed to be punched, before giving your deposit money back.
Two days ago, I returned 3 bottles. The guy at the cashier started asking me for "the receipt" for the milk I purchased. I told him I don't have it and that was never asked from me before. The guy at the cashier and the 2 ladies with him were obviously not happy that I am trying to get my deposit back (about $6+ total for 3 bottles)
The POS crashed after 5 mins of waiting and needed a restart. It would've been okay to wait, but the obvious irritated vibe from the staff for the task at hand made it not worth my time or money. So I politely told one of the ladies,
"Está bien, dejaré las botellas. Es demasiado problema. Gracias." (translation: It's okay, I'll just leave the bottles. It's too much trouble. Thank you.)
The lady helper responded (with a less than irritated face now), "Si, es mejor" (translation: Yes, it's better)
WOW. Yes, it's better for me to leave the bottles and not get my money back? Better for who? For Green Center of course. Sorry to cause you too much trouble by trying to reuse bottles because your return process is faulty and difficult to use at best.
Now I'm definitely NOT coming back, especially since the local milk product found at most supermarkets, Dos Pinos, is just as good and tetra packs are recyclable too.
If you want to overpay, or to have the same frustrating experience at bottle repurposing, Green Center is definitely the place to go.response / report this review -

Not the cheapest place, but still a good und reliable Source for all your organic groceries with a broad selection for vegetarians und even vegans.

The new location in Escazu is epic! Great selection of organic products. Health food stores like the Green Center help support organic farming which leads to a healthier environment for everyone. Sure, it's more expensive but your well-being is worth it. The GC carries Mama Toucan's natural vegan ice cream!
