Bodhi Surf + Yoga is more than a camp, it is THE BEST experience!
I have been there 6 times (yes, no typo) and never get enough of this place and the people who I now call my friends.
The jungle setting is breathtaking and the perfect setting for yoga. The beaches are long and empty and the beach break couldn't be better for a fun surf session.
And all this guided by some amazing teachers who not only want to teach your what they are passioned about but really care about your journey.
It's a special place which will see me again and again!

Felt welcomed and nourished with this eco/socially mindful community. My experience at Bodhi Surf & Yoga Camp was unforgettable. Thank you so much Adrinanne, Gibran, Pilar and Travis for welcoming us and passing on your lessons. My journey with yoga, surfing and travel will never be the same. Guests and interns enhanced the experience. I am grateful to have met such wonderful people and shared such a special experience. I appreciated that great thoughtfulness and intention goes into everything at Bodhi. Enjoy!
Our vacation at Bodhi Surf and Yoga was amazing. We went to Bodhi looking to slow down and recharge, to get back into a daily yoga practice and to learn to surf. We left energized and inspired! The Bodhi Surf Team are professionals passionate not only about surfing and yoga but about the health of our environment, the ocean and their local community within Uvita. Bodhi is a small operation really respected within the community. On our free time while we were out and about there were multiple occasions when upon learning that we were guests at Bodhi, the people were were talking to would simply say - they are a great group of people. They truly are. We didn't get to meet Travis and Pilar who where away over Christmastime, but the time we spent with Adrianne and Gibran was really great. Bodhi is a small operation - there were a total of 5 guests plus Adrianne and Gibran during our week stay there over Christmas - we all spent a lot of time in the common space area during the day and at mealtime and we had great fun getting to know each other better, telling stories, laughing (a lot)!
The property is perfect size with lush gardens, a swimming pool and 6 structures including: the Yoga platform, 2 bungalows, the common space with Kitchen and lounge area (and two guest rooms on top) and then both of the owners living quarters. Meals were skillfully prepared and fresh including Gallo Pinto, fresh fruits, homemade yogurt and granola and some of the best coconut chicken curry ever! I even snagged a few recipes to make at home :-) We stayed in the Gratitude bungalow and it was perfect. It has two rooms and a nice central living space and a fully stocked kitchen. We didn't use the kitchen much but it would easily support full meal preparation should you need it.
Gibran was our surfing instructor extraordinaire and had each and every one of us standing up and catching waves on the 4th day. His approach is excellent - each day has a defined skill and goal and objective. There is a short lecture on the beach at the start explaining the dynamics of surfing, waves and the ocean in general and then into the ocean you go! I have spent 100s of hours at the ocean over the course of my life but haven't really ever had anyone break down what is happening with the tides, the breaks, etc in such a easy to consume way. I learned a lot!
I have heard Pilar's yoga is not to be missed and one day hopefully I'll make it back for a class w/ her but I am thankful she selected Suzanne as our instructor while she was away. Suzanne was extremely knowledgeable and skilled and incorporates so much more than just the poses into her classes. A lot of us were tired and sore from the activities of the week and we all felt great after her classes! Practicing yoga upstairs on the outdoor platform is a treat!
At the end of the day, this was more than just a vacation for us - it was a pleasure to get to know Bodhi, spend time in Uvita and get to know the other guests that traveled to be there for the week. Thanks for a great week, Bodhi!
A great retreat for beginners and experienced surfers and yogis. The lodge is simple and beautiful, with a warm and relaxing atmosphere. They serve healthy and delicious food, and they have all of the amenities one would need for a wonderful vacation. The surf and yoga instruction were excellent. Bahia Ballena is a clean, welcoming and proud community. The beach and surrounding landscape are uncrowded and so beautiful. We appreciated the small group setting and Bodhi’s strong emphasis on the health of the environment and their community. We would love to be back.
Professional and friendly crew. I have traveled in many places in this world and Bodhi was one of the most incredible traveling experiences (beautiful, community & social justice oriented, educational, FUN, full of soul nourishing moments in nature with dynamic folks) Even if you don’t care much about surfing or yoga, give Bodhi a chance to open your heart and mind!
My husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary at Bodhi and it was an incredible experience. Warm, engaging hosts made us feel at home at the lodge and part of the broader community. The yoga classes were magical - Pilar is a wonderful and sensitive teacher attuned to the needs of her students. I’ve been doing yoga for 20 years on and off but her passion has inspired me to inspired me to commit to a practice. We loved surf lessons with Travis. It was definitely out of our comfort zone but the instruction was so excellent that our confidence and comfort in the water grew quickly. Adrianne made amazing authentic meals that took into consideration our preferences and my allergy. It’s was such a pleasure to sit down and dine with the whole crew over her delicious meals. Gibran made the whole communication process so simple and clear and I felt like we had a relationship with him before we arrived. And the delightful intern Hannah is such a fun and enthusiastic presence day in and day out. All in all you feel like you’re being welcomed into this groovy, fun, passionate and open-hearted family for a week. It is a very special place. I didn’t expect to be so impacted by it, but I was. Highly recommended if you’re looking for an active, engaging and thought provoking vacation experience.
Bodhi Surf + Yoga is a mystical place. Lush tropical flowers and plants surround you. Birds sing you to sleep at night, and wake you up in the morning. The yoga platform sits among the treetops. It's a short walk to an unspoiled beach. No hotels. No beach chair rentals. Just palm and eucalyptus trees as far as the eye can see. Maybe the best beach in the world to learn to surf.
The owners greet you. They treat you like family. The rooms are beautiful and comfortable. No excess, but all you need and more.
Pilar leads the yoga practices with grace and kindness. Pilar's yoga is the perfect compliment to the surf lessons. She also was cooking the week that I was there, and every meal was a pleasure.
Travis is the surfer. At 62, I had no expectation that I would be able stand up on a surfboard in the water, much less actually surf. But with his patient guidance I was up and gliding through the water on my own by the end of the week. I've got a long way to go in my surfing journey, but Travis has provided the foundation.
I left Bodhi yesterday. When I woke up this morning in San Jose on my way home, there were no birds singing, there was no breakfast prepared with love, there was no anticipation that this day would provide treasures even more beautiful than the last. The world feels like there is less color in it.
By now, you may think that I am some kind of new age airhead. I'm actually a veteran trial lawyer. Most of my online reviews are warnings not to buy something or stay away from a terrible restaurant. However, Bodhi simply touched my soul.
Thanks to all at Bodhi for such a beautiful experience. And, thank you Pilar and Travis for letting me be part of your family for a week.
Awesome experience, this place is paradise. Bodhi is so much more than a surf school. They are engaged in the community and in environment protection and it made my experience with them rich and inspiring.
Loved taking classes here! You learn not only surfing, but also history of the area and surfing , community and environment. Travis is a great teacher and advocate for surfers. Look no further for a school, they have it down. I now consider Travis a friend and someone to help me continue my surf education with.
I visited Bodhi for a week during my MBA program's spring break, and it was one of the best travel decisions I've ever made. The experience is authentic, the people are genuine, and the instruction unparalleled. In one week, I learned fundamentals of surfing and yoga that I will be able to use for years to come. Highly recommended!
Enough can't be said about the unreal experience we had with Bodhi Surf school. Gibran has a unique and very effective way of teaching. You can feel his enthusiasm and love for the sport as he's teaching you which makes learning very easy.
We had such a great time we came back again!
Great experience for my first surf lesson! The instructors were all very fun and professional. Received good instruction and safety. I think we were a group of 10--and I believe that all of us got up on our boards. Great student/teacher ratio. I felt like I had a private lesson. They give you any help you need-but you definitely do it on your own. I would have been thrilled just getting up once, but I did several times--I absolutely loved surfing!!
