Great customer service. I hired Wi-Fi with them and it only worked for 2 days out 10. To my surprise the wrote it off the bill. I highly recommend them. And of course car was in an excellent condition
The staff was nice. We are Avis Preferred customers but they were taking all the customers without making any difference. The car they gave us was just ok, could have done better for the class of car we had. But they were extremely nice and dropped us at our hotel when we returned the car, at no extra charge.
Pure crooks - !!! AVOID BY ANY MEANS !!! (read below)
I rented the car thru a third party company. Paying about $300 + $80 for third party insurance.
When we get in, they immediately quickly say "we need another insurance" otherwise we could not get the car. Even though I already have 3 different insurances (my car, my credit cards, my third party insurance).
At 10pm, I did not have the patience to go thru details, so I decided I'd paid for that "mandatory insurance". Price he told me were written nowhere. He could have just invented them. I confirm with them that they will only charge an extra $270. YES they say. I pay even though I was already pissed off.
But guess what, after I give back the car (I purposely washed it and cleaned it to avoid problems) and get back home, I see they charged another $240 out of the blue. Without telling me. After reading more carefully the papers, I think I figured out the trick to confuse us.
They are just lucky that we as customers can't fight back from abroad easily against a big company. They should be ashamed to work for Avis.
I will never rent a car from Avis again. And please do the same.
And dear Avis, no need to reply to this, I will not read your answer.
Horrible experience! They deserve zero stars.
This review is posted under my actual name, I'm not hiding behind some anonymous, fake web name, which should help you understand how wronged I felt from my interaction with Avis described here.
Made a reservation two months in advance which was confirmed by Avis (both email and telephone) Once I arrived at the the agency, the price was nearly double.
The clerks attitude was basically "take it or leave it"
I asked him to call a Taxi for us, and he did.
We went to our hotel and the hotel staff helped us rent a car from a company that was more in line with what we planned to spend as well as being much more customer service oriented.
This was not my first rodeo in CR. I have been going to, and renting cars in CR for over 25 years and I understand that they are going to require insurance as well as trying to up-sell etc. Trust me, it was not a misunderstanding on my part with regard to an additional charge for insurance. It was bait and switch to a predatory price increase and then 'take it or leave it' with a we don't care either way attitude.
Do yourself a favor and find another car rental company.
The car I received was very nice. They pick you up at the airport personally which is nice. However, they, like all car rentals in Costa Rica, DO NOT include the mandatory insurance cost in the price quote. Fine, I’ll accept that business practice. But they will not accept whatever insurance you have, credit card, third party, etc. I had Allianz Global. They would not allow me to use my insurance and would not rent me the car without buying their insurance, minimum was an extra $25usd per day, of course he started with the highest insurance plans at an extra $50+ per day. My advice, check with any car rental ahead of time to find out what the insurance policy is, as that can and most likely will double your rental costs for your trip.
Car Rental Near the Costa Rica Marriott. You will have to take a shuttle and there is no Avis counter inside SJO Airport, if you arrive in the evening. The shuttle will bring you to the Avis Corporate lot. Be prepared to sign 2 blank credit card slips; it is an uncomfortable feeling for most people. Avis will charge, not "put a hold" on your credit card; this will be reversed if you bring the car back in good order. The employees are professional and helpful.
Excellent customer service. Drop off was quick and painless. Friendly staff too.
Customer service is friendly, but you must read carefully what is offered. Check with your credit card what really covers. Then, what is necessary for a great experience driving around without concerns.
Bunch of criminals here they add all kinds of extra charges on your rental once you arrive I found a better car with full coverage for less than these guys were charging for the minimum mandatory coverage. Go else where plenty of other cheaper options.
Be aware the price you've been quoted online will more than double. Avis advised us to get a large car which was indeed a good idea, as the roads of Costa Rica can be quite harsh
Great location. Easy rental and return. Wish Avis did not advertise thy are at the airport when the fact is they are not! Aso Insurance is mandatory in all of Costa Rica regardless of what awesome credit card you have so quit arguing with the employees at this Avis and just pay it or go somewhere else but good luck with that.
Very poor service from avis in Costa Rica. Reading the review below looks nothing has changed or improved. I needed the car for 2 weeks so given the length of the rental I would have expected a much better car. My car was a 40,000km nissan xtrail. After 500km the alert for maintenance on oil, filters and tyres started to flash. The tyres (all 4 of them) were well beyond the minimum thickness mark, and as expected I had a puncture. I did complain returning the car but noone really took notice of it. I did complain a bit louder and I got promised a 10% discount but I've received the final invoice today and there is no sign of the discount.
Especially disappointed as I've been renting with avis for a while in the UK, USA, Italy, France, Switzerland etc so relatively good client.
I guess no need to be loyal. Just go for the best price from now on !!
Great service, we got up sold hard and payed for it but it was worth it. Great experience
I will provide facts about my reservation and experience. Let you be the judge of whether you would rent from this rental agency:
1. I am an Avis Preferred member. Even though this is an Avis Preferred location, I had to perform a counter pick up.
2. This Avis and other car companies are located approximately 8 to 9 km from the airport. The shuttle that took us there took approximately 12 to 15 mins. Part of the area is warehouse back roads that made us nervous.
3. Upon arrival we saw booths for other car rental agencies but Avis. Someone kind enough helped us locate an Avis rep who called in the Shuttle.
4. The rep at the office informed us that there's a mandatory $18.99 per day liability insurance even if you have a credit card provided insurance. I have Amex Premium Rental Car Protection that I pay extra for, but that was not acceptable. Options I was given at 10pm with young kids: pay $144 extra or we will drop you back at the airport.
5. Even though this is Avis, I was given an older model SUV with nearly 37k kilometers on it. Given the condition of Costa Rica roads 37k miles probably equals 50k miles in car age.
6. Upon return there was no clear signage or address provided for car return. Thanks to Google maps for help there.
7. I was charged $50 for a missing license plate even though I don't know how it went missing or whether it was there to begin with. Explanation from Avis rep: sometimes people steal license plates. Huh?
I personally am disappointed with Avis and will not rent again from this location.
They have nice cars, but access is a litle complicated. Not thar close to the airport.
Fast and easy. Insurance included from the UK. No issues encountered.
Horrible experience with Avis :
I rented a car by Internet just for one day, we go to the airport to take the car and :
1st disappointment : it's not in the airport and it's not mention anywhere
2nd disappointment : we had difficulties to find the guy for the shuttle, we ask to the another company, and we finally find him far from the entry, calling someone
3rd : he said the shuttle come in 20min, after 30min nothing we go to ask him, he said "strange I will call", and finally the shuttle "forget us" (his own words) and "he will arrive in 30min". It was 8PM, we was tired by the flight, it was very cold and windy, and we had wait during 60min just for the shuttle.
The shuttle drive very badly and very fast, no excuse.
4th : we arrived at the car pick-up, the only good surprise : they surclass us because we wait at the airport, ok.
But I book the car on Internet for 36 dollars, and finally I must paid 63$. I ask explications, "it's because in Costa Rica it's special and your Visa Gold or MasterCard Golg don't cover the insurance , it's written in the general conditions on Internet". I was very surprised, I travel a lot since 16 years and it's the first time I see that. I said to him I'm not agree, i booked it few hours before and it was writing it's 36$, I was waiting a long time in the airport, and normallly my Gold card cover this kind of insurance.
He just tear the reservation paper that I begin to fill, and he said ok, it's your choice, I will call the shuttle to take you back to the airport.
It was 9:30 PM, we were completely tired and we were in need of the car for the next day, impossible to find another car in the night, so we finally throw over and took the car.
It was the first time with Avis, and the last one. I'm feeling completely trick, all the behavior of the employees were ungracious.
I definitely not recommend AVIS for rent your car.
Very clean and new rental 2X4 SUV. Had to pay mandatory 3rd party Costa Rican insurance (paid USD $250 for 7 days over rental charge). Did not accept the Platinum Card benefits since that only covers the rental vehicle. No hazzel on return. Quick transfers back and forth airport.
A little far from SJO but service was decent. Car pick up was a bit painful but drop off was rapid. Reservation was via email and very weird.
The mandatory insurance is a major pain. But you have the pay the portion that is mandated by law. You can and should decline all other issurance if you are covered personnaly. The sales person used every misleading tactic in the book to sell us more insurance. Using arguments such as 'here in costa rica the towing company can trick you and that's why you need more insurance'. They also made a big fuss about the car being new and us declining the extra insurance. Threathening us that we'd need to pay if there was a scratch (see other comment on this common tactic). Why is Avis HQ tolerating such bad behavior ? That was our last time with Avis.
