There were these Australians when I was there. You know I never know anymore whether the people I meet take an interest in me because of my natural charisma lol or for ulterior motives, which motives I admit remain a mystery. The fact is I have to work at extroversion. I sometimes fall into gregariousness, but it's to cover all kinds of discomfort and inadequacies of my own. My natural state is alone with a book. Because I've made deprecatory remarks about the Australians, I should issue these caveats. They have been ridiculously loyal to the interests of the United States. As far as cultural generalizations go, they must be a very courageous people. I really don't know any of them that well. This guy was there for, what did he call it, astro-photography. On his way to an island in the Uyuni Salt Flat ninety-odd miles from the nearest lightbulb to photograph the reflection of the Milky Way in the seasonal Uyuni lake.

Ok more about Ayn Rand. She's taking about how "Night of January 16th", originally titled "Penthouse Legend", was mangled in it's production. It's funny, not because it's funny, but because it's painful even at a distance.

They've got a great book exchange. Amongst their gems are the collected stories of Edgar Allen Poe, which are always good rereading, most especially as ghost stories to young kids; Balzac's Le Père Goriot, which given an extended stay here at the end of the world one might attempt a second time in the original; Michener's The Source, which is a great work about history and archaeology and Judaism that I read when I was about 13; the narrative frame is ingenious. There's also a book by Ken Follett, an author I've been intending to read since some trilogy of his was recommended to me by a librarian at the Englewood Public Library who I just love. I think Ellen; I'm embarrassed to say I've forgotten her name. I don't really reread anything, except by accident. I picked out a play by Ayn Rand, who I have never read. I don't like prose or verse theater written or viewed but it's a short work and I am enjoying the introduction. Also Clavell's Tai-pan which I don't think I'll read because the setting's really all wrong — there's nothing Asian about my current peregrinations.

This is the end of the world. It is past the last stop.

The owner Ross is a really great guy who generally cares for the well being of his guests. You can see his attentiveness each morning during breakfast. The hostel is clean and very spacious. The hot water and internet worked perfectly. The location is great as it's near the bus station, a market, the beach, grocery stores and restaurants. There's even plenty of parking for those who are driving, like myself. Overall, I had a wonderful time there.

I spent three nights at Sunny Days and I am full of praise for Ross, his wife and staff. It is a warm welcoming place Its very close to the bus station (international bus station is next door to the standard station) and a good walk or cheap bus ride to the centre. All facilities are close and the price is excellent.

This place is awesome. Ross, the owner makes you feel very welcome as soon as you arrive. This place is basically a big home, so it's very cosy. Location is perfect, close to the national and international bus terminals, supermarkets, beach, banks and local buses to centre. 25 mins walk to central Arica, which is nothing really.
Breakfast is superb. The best bread I've had in South America in 3 months of travel through Arg, Brazil, Peru and Chile. Plenty of fruit, cereal, teas and coffee. Dorm rooms have great single beds instead of bunks and all the bathrooms are clean and function well. The WiFi is good. It's a hostel for relaxing really, but most people who go to Arica are looking for that. Arica is quiet, but when you've come from the hectic Cusco or San Pedro, it's a great place to chill and recharge and get yourself ready for the next leg of the trip. I would not stay anywhere else in Arica. 9/10.

I ended up staying here for ten days when intending to just pass through Arica. Great location near the bus terminals, main bus line into the city center and the beach (!!!), clean rooms and decent facilities, friendly management and solid breakfast. The owner Ross gives excellent instructions on getting around town, using the busses, collectivos and on getting into Peru.

The moment I entered I felt like home. The people are so welcoming, breakfast was really great, the rooms good size and a place to lock your stuff away. The showers were big and warm and the wifi was really good. Close to the beach and busstation. Really good experience!!

Great place to spend a night or two after crossing the border or before your trip to Peru/Bolivia. Quiet setting with relaxed kiwi host add to the comfort. Lovely breakfast filled with unlimited information on what, how and when to do things locally as well as up and down the coast.

The management here is off the highest caliber. Everything I needed he helped with, especially planning to cross the border into Peru during a strike by the Chilean customs employees. The second I showed up he invited me to sit down for breakfast and to worry about the paperwork after. Highly recommended.
