As an NICU mom myself, I can relate to the mental and emotional stress these moms express. I struggled with what was likely undiagnosed postpartum depression until about six years after my son's preterm birth. I noticed the change, like Laura, about the time my baby turned one. I remember telling my husband one night on the two-hour drive home from the hospital, that one day I wanted to go back as the nurse who understood the parents. And now, 18 years later, that is still part of my motivation for completing nursing school.

If most preterm babies will start breathing by themselves within 60 seconds, then it makes perfect sense to maintain the umbilical cord which can continue to provide oxygen for even longer than that first minute. This should be routine in every birth, including c-sections.
